What do 'first flutters' feel like?

I'm 18 weeks tomorrow. Apparently I should start feeling flutters any time now.. but I have no idea what to look out for?

My belly right now just feels like I have a strong 'pulse' there.

Is it unmistakable when the flutters start? And what's the earliest/latest people in their first pregnancies have felt any sort of noticeable movement? TIA

They feel like trapped gas.

Very low, near the pubic hair line.

LoveBuckets · 11/02/2009 19:33

Like the gloopy bubbles in a lava lamp reaching the top.

Great question SheWillBeLoved, I am 17 weeks on Friday and was wondering what to expect. Sorry not meaning to take over your thread. (blush)

SheWillBeLoved · 11/02/2009 19:45

It's okay MoominMoma

I can hear the baby moving about when I listen in with a doppler now and again, I just wish I could feel it at the same time as hearing it!

Not got much of a bump at all, and this pregnancy has been far too easy so far, I suppose the flutters would make me feel like there is actually something in there

It felt kind of like a muscle twitching for me.

mum2b09 · 11/02/2009 19:55

i dont ever realy remember feeling flutters as such but i have heared alot of women saying it kinda feels like trapped wind, i felt movements from around 17 weeks and they were always like kicks just very light ones only noticeable if i was lying on my back completely still and quiet or in the bath. Im 36 weeks now and i swear my babys trying to escape out my belly button he or she is a real wriggler congrats to you hun youve got alot to look forward to and alot to get through in the next few months but enjoy it it goes alot faster than ud think xxxxxxxxxxx

strawberrie · 11/02/2009 19:58

I think the lava lamp description is good one, also it feels a bit like a bubble popping.

trixymalixy · 11/02/2009 20:13

I felt the first movements at around 20 weeks. it felt like someon stroking me gently with a feather.

HeinzSight · 11/02/2009 20:15

Agree they first feel like wind!

ShowOfHands · 11/02/2009 20:17

Felt like a very tiny drum to me, little beats, usually on the bus on my way home from work. This was always her most active time, right until I went on maternity leave.

teafortwo · 11/02/2009 20:24

When I was pregnant the cleaner at work said to me "When you first feel the baby it is really a strong feeling. You feel a little pop here (she touched her lower stomach) and immediately after your tummy feels like it has turned completely over and you get a sort of whooshing feeling that rushes straight to your head. Like when you look over a very very high bridge!"

A few day later when I felt my baby for the first time and that is EXACTLY how it felt!

  • ENJOY!!!!

I read / heard a lot that it feels like little flutterings but I didn't feel that at all! The lava lamp / wind description is exactly what I felt - and quite late, at about 24 weeks. I was told that my placenta is at the front and so it cushions some of the movement.
It's exciting to feel the movements and I'm sure I'll look back with fond memories - but right now, at 34 weeks, I could do with a break!

heartmoonshadow · 11/02/2009 22:20

Hi,

I am just 17 weeks and I felt it the other night as I was driving home - it was really strange I nearly crashed!!!

Anyway I would describe it like when you run your finger down a clean plate and it drags - only on the inside - hope this helps.

Cozycozy · 11/02/2009 22:35

i dont get it! Im 22 weeks,1st baby,,I get like tint feelings as if my period is on the way!? right now i have uncomfortable tender feeling on my right side, when i press lightly it hurts a bit,,HELp>??

LoveMyLapTop · 11/02/2009 22:37

Like someone gently tickling you inside or drumming their fingers

Happymum2be · 12/02/2009 11:18

I didn't feel much until week 22, then it just started like little bubbles floating upwards which I had probably not recognised as movement for a couple of weeks. If I eat chocolate or anything sweet and lie down then he moves loads. He's moved on now to sommersaults, karate kicks and full on punches in my ribs. Loving it!

heverhoney1 · 12/02/2009 13:00

The "Pulse" thing is exactly as I describe it and still do even though it is more of a throb now she is a hefty 29 weeker lol. I think its a bit like describing a colour when you tell other people everyone has their own experiences and interpretation. A lot of people told me it felt like popcorn popping which is not even close to how I felt!

heverhoney1 · 12/02/2009 13:04

p.s I realised that it was unmisakable baby when she took a right good aim at my bladder!!!

I admit she started proper full body wriggling and the like a couple of weeks ago - I spent an entire evening watching my belly like it was something out of alien (Then I tried balancing stuff on it to see if she would kick it off- bad mother already??) BRILLIANT!!

helpivegottogivebirth · 12/02/2009 13:08

Don't worry if you don't feel anything until 22 weeks i didn't and was beginning to get paranoid.

the feelings vary - iy does sometimes feel like a muscle twitch (ie eyelid twitch but slower and in your tummy) and other times like gas bubbles escaping.

The first time i had a definite feeling which i knew was the baby was a proper kick - like his foot had slipped off the clutch. It was almost painful! But i haven't had one of those since.

helpivegottogivebirth · 12/02/2009 13:09

Heverhoney - that sounds exciting! I can't wait for that stage!

heverhoney1 · 12/02/2009 13:14

I have not had quite as strong movements since (May have been the glass of coke that I couldnt resist that night which set her off). But it was great - I am officially a navel gazer! The eyelid twitch is exactly what I felt to start with too.

lastboxoftampons · 12/02/2009 14:40

I ~think~ I just felt "flutters" for the first time yesterday. It felt like someone was tapping me from the inside of my stomach about half way down from my belly button. But I agree with Heverhoney and Helpivegottogivebirth as well - it's almost like a pulse or a muscle twitch.

I think that was a kick. Then shortly after, I felt like someone was tickling my stomach from the inside, very very lightly. Maybe it was baby turning over/wriggling around as opposed to an actual kick?

Happened for me after lunch and when I sit up straight and then lean forward over my desk.

poppysweetie · 14/02/2009 21:47

It feels like an insect inside me is my best description! I first felt it at 19 weeks

WowOoo · 14/02/2009 21:54

Think feeling a strong pulse is nice. I'm 17 wks and jsut have the odd bubble, pop, windy feeling. Yeah, like stroking with a feather INSIDE you!? ooh..But really not much yet and not regularly.

Can clearly remember ds' first flutters but can't remember how many weeks unless i get my old diary out.

So lovely when you're lying in bed trying to sleep and you feel something you'd never feel if you weren't preg.
We'll feel it properly very very soon....

ChocFudgeCake · 14/02/2009 21:57

A gentle little fish! Honest.
