What do 'first flutters' feel like?

I'm 18 weeks tomorrow. Apparently I should start feeling flutters any time now.. but I have no idea what to look out for?

My belly right now just feels like I have a strong 'pulse' there.

Is it unmistakable when the flutters start? And what's the earliest/latest people in their first pregnancies have felt any sort of noticeable movement? TIA

Ah, that's a lovely description of a little fish and very true.
Wish I'd thought of that!

My wife says it was like having wind.

insertwittynicknameHERE · 15/02/2009 08:17

It's like wind but you don't fart afterwards

Qally · 15/02/2009 08:18

Like a tadpole in my tummy!

daisyblue · 15/02/2009 08:36

Hello - lovely question, bringing it all back to me.
I first felt mine week 20 - bubbles popping is the best description (easily mistaken for wind). Usually when you are relaxed, or lying down ... then it gets stronger (like fingers tapping the inside of your tummy) ... then one day ...boot
'tis amazing.

I can feel it seems to be more on the left side underneath my bellybutton. Like a little goldfish flapping about.. but gently

I feel like a madwoman sat in my office alone, leaning forward and touching my toes (seems to start it off) and then giggling to myself.. thank god I don't share !

The fluttering/butterfly thing never really struck a chord for me.

My first sensation felt like blowing bubbles through a straw in something like a McDonalds thick chocolate milkshake.

I'm 22 weeks (first baby) and also getting paranoid that something is wrong because I have not felt him move (despite having had a detailed scan two weeks ago which was totally normal). My doctor told me that the placenta being in the front meant it would be later than most, but I still manage to feel anxious about it. Having said that I had a bad night last night, just feeling generally uncomfortable, and did feel what felt like a little bubble of trapped wind a few times, maybe that was it!? I get some funny stretching feelings during the day too...
I was relieved to read about people who have only felt the movements this late or later.

Red tabby -

That bubble feeling sounds like it to me!

It's quite gradual but I bet you'll start feeling bigger bubble burst feelings over the next weeks.

Then one day you'll feel a sort of thud inside - proper kicking! If you watch your tum you'll see it rippling.

neena123 · 16/02/2009 13:51

I first noticed at about 15 weeks (25 wks now) - like wind but in the wrong place! this then progressed to what felt like muscle spasms and seeing my tummy rippling like bumpsadaisie said - very odd but also reassuring!

Helen31 · 16/02/2009 16:01

Wind!

Also a regular twitching/bumping which is (I think) hiccups, and very common ime.

You'll enjoy it when you can see them moving - still freaks my DH out, as they can be really dramatic. At nearly 38 weeks, I am getting big shoves and lumps sticking out all over, and really disappointed when I look and can't see anything (I think I'm hoping that I could see the outline of a foot lol).

Helen31 · 16/02/2009 16:04

Oh, forgot to say that I didn't really notice anything until 22 weeks. Try not to worry - you will soon have them dancing on your bladder before you know it .

Lets see, Im 14, almost 15 weeks pregnant, i felt my first flutters yesterday. I was laying on my couch and touching my stomach when i felt the most strange sensation ive felt in my entire life. From what i remember, everything was quiet and still and then i felt a weird pressure in my uterus. Like something pushed against it, then butterflies. Millions of butterflies. Atleast thats what it felt like. It happened twice, a few minutes inbetween each time. I couldent help but smile. The best thing i could tell you is that you will know when its your baby, i did, it was intense. Lol.

I'm nearly 17 weeks and felt something twice the last couple of days that was quite bizarre. Like something crawling across my stomach - maybe would feel like tiny bubbles to some. The first was to my lower left, the second about an inch under my belly button. I'm hoping this is the start and I'll be being booted in no time :)

hubbahubster · 27/03/2011 09:39

I've got my placenta at the front and I'm nearly 23 weeks, so I don't feel movement all the time, but started getting definite thumps about a week/2 weeks ago. I agree with previous posters, it's like trapped wind so TBH I probably just couldn't distinguish between a fart and the baby to start with! But now when I get a strong one, it makes me feel a bit weird and faint - definitely baby!

will a tilted uterus impact if you feel it?
