Should be 7 + 5 today but scan said 6 weeks

No heartbeat to be found and gestational sac apparently measured 6 weeks. The doctor said that it wouldn't be unusual not to see at heartbeat at 6 weeks but I am also very sure of my dates.

Because I am so sure of dates I was advised that I was likely to miscarry at some point soon.

Has this happenned to anyone else and the scan was wrong? Desperately clutching at straws now

Was it an internal scan? I thought I was definately over 7 weeks when I had really heavy bleeding, had a scan 3 days later and they put me back to 6+1, but there was a hearbeat present.

Are they rescanning you soon? Hope everything sticks and grows where it should for you x

wasabipeanut · 12/01/2009 17:01

They did an internal one after the tummy one didn't show anything up. They have receommended a rescan in a week but I was sort of wondering if there was any point.

Thanks for your good wishes. Been crying all afternoon and desperately trying to make the dates add up. I can't.

Was there anything at all in the sac?

Do go for the rescan - alot can happen inside that oven in a week! And if not, then at least you will know either way and won't be so torn

Pezzina · 12/01/2009 17:08

Wasabi I had been keeping an eye out for you on the Grape Fruit thread. So sorry to hear your news

I have no experience of these things so can't offer you any words of advice.

Is there any way you could have gotten your dates wrong?

Sending you bigs hugs, sweetie xx

wasabipeanut · 12/01/2009 17:11

thanks Pezz - just posted on the Grape Fruit thread. I am 100% sure of my dates in that I know when my AF was. I was ill around my ov time but using OPK's so I saw a surge and assumed I would ov at that time. It is possible I ov'd later but not 12 days latr which is the discrepancy between dates and scan.

Think I'm all cried out now. x

I went for lots of early scans at the same stage as you and every time they put me back a week or more, even though I was so sure of my dates. Now 6 wks til I'm due, so all was well in the end for me, hope this helps. Hang in there!

Joolsiam · 12/01/2009 17:27

Wasabi - I've read soooooo many stories of people being dated incorrectly at an early scan and then it all working out - don't lose hope !

I've heard that the margin for error in dating prior to 8 weeks is pretty large - add to that the fact that embryos must develop at different rates / implantation may have taken longer than average - I am sure that a difference of 12 days at this stage is not conclusive.

Keeping everything crossed for you honey - I know this is going to be a long week

wasabipeanut · 12/01/2009 17:29

Thanks Jools x

Don't give up hope, the 1st scan I had showed a sac with nothing in it and a week later there was my little shrimp with a heartbeat. My dates were all wrong! Hopefully tomorrow I should know more as I have managed to get to 12 weeks this time. Fingers crossed this will be the case for you.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 12/01/2009 17:33

I know how crap this is for you but I know my friend was exactly the same, convinced about her dates, knew her cycle really well and somehow or other was over a week out when scanned. We never understood why but the little one did ok and was a healthy baby girl. Hang in and do go for the next scan as you do need to know what's going on, the unknown is the biggest fear of all.

wasabipeanut · 12/01/2009 17:48

Ok, booked a blood test for tomorrow am - apparently they can measure HCG levels and that will be conclusive so at least I will know one way or the other. Thanks for your support all x

Good luck.

ladylush · 12/01/2009 18:27

Good luck, has happened to me 3 times with poor outcomes but have been encouraged by some of the posts on here. Fingers crossed for you

fairywing · 12/01/2009 18:37

Hi I am going through exactly the same thing, was scanned last Tuesday at what i thought was 8 weeks but could have been an little less and told i am about 6 weeks. This is not possible. I had no help at all until i had read the many threads on hear with positive outcomes and also visited this site www.misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com where there are lots of stories and explanations for this happening. I go for a rescan next Monday, i now think it could go either way but am realistic that things don't look great. I have everything crossed. Hope you have a outcome.

i went for scan at 10 weeks and was told i was 10 days out (i.e. measuring 8wks+4), but i was certian of my dates as i was temping. i then went for routine scan at 12 weeks, and was told i was 5 days out...as someone earlier said, the margin for error is huge. hope it all works out for you hun*

EvieBear · 12/01/2009 19:54

i went for a scan at 9 weeks (worked out with LMP), and was told i was 5 weeks (i do have a very long cycle, 35 days) instead! i was so worried as they could only see a yolk sac and gestational sac but when i went back two weeks later, there was baby!! my ovulation must be crazy!

oxocube · 12/01/2009 19:57

Yes this happened to me and I discovered I had had an early miscarriage. Hope your outcome is better. Best of luck - the waiting is horrible

oopsacoconut · 12/01/2009 21:47

I had a scan when I thought I was 7+4 and they said I was less than 6 weeks - I knew it was not possible but went back 3 weeks later and was measuring 11+1. I think the error margin is 20% on scans (or that is what the EPU told us) and 20% of 2cm is a huge amount but 20% of 10cm does not seem so huge.

Pinkbump3 · 12/01/2009 22:04

wasabi i thought i had mc when was sent for a scan, i should have been 11 weeks i was definate on my dates as i have been charting and keeping diary for over a year.

When i went they said sorry there was nothing there...i was so sure and devestated i got sent to the epu to dicuss what happens next and they rescanned me only for a baby to pop up on screen with heartbeat pumping away! baby measured 8 weeks, dont ask me how because like i said my dates where definate but im now 26 weeks pg.

So please go for your rescan as you never know xx good luck.

Pinkbump3 · 12/01/2009 22:08

Eviebear (sorry hijack comming up) have you had your baby or are you still pg? Just wondering if you had baby by lmp or scan dates? as my story seem simlar to yours.

yellowflowers · 12/01/2009 23:45

Hi wasabi - will say hi on grapefruit thread too but am hoping beyond hope that all is ok.
x

nandos · 13/01/2009 00:05

wasabi, hope you are ok hunny ..
the last time i had a scan during my 7wk, it measured 6+3 and the lady told me not to worry and she could see a flicker although i could hardly see one cos' its too fuzzy. its normal to be dated earlier than what we calc from the lmp and i hope yours will be the same too..
if you are really worried, pls go to the epu in a couple of days since they dated you as 6 weeks and abt 2-3days later if its viable, they would be able to see a flicker of heartbeat.

good luck wasabi

wasabipeanut · 13/01/2009 12:58

Fairywing I hope everything works out for you. I had had some blood taken today to test for HCG levels so hopefully will find out for sure tomorrow.

Fingers crossed for both of us.
