Should be 7 + 5 today but scan said 6 weeks

No heartbeat to be found and gestational sac apparently measured 6 weeks. The doctor said that it wouldn't be unusual not to see at heartbeat at 6 weeks but I am also very sure of my dates.

Because I am so sure of dates I was advised that I was likely to miscarry at some point soon.

Has this happenned to anyone else and the scan was wrong? Desperately clutching at straws now

Hi Wasabi, Sorry you are going through this - I know how hard it is. I have had this twice although in my case there has been a heart beat but it has been measuring small for dates and unfortunately both times have ended in miscarriage. I know though that lots of people have gone on to have successful pregnancies so hope this is the case for you.

Well I just got my test results and I am measuring 46 days apparently whereas by my sums I should be at least 50.

Given that my scan dated 6 weeks and 46 days is 6 plus 4 then it's not looking great.

Getting bloods done again Friday to check if levels going up or down.

So another few days of agonising wait.

Wasabi, I don't think 4 days difference is much. What did they say today? Was there a hb?

ladylush · 14/01/2009 16:17

I also heard that hcg blood levels are not always reliable.

wasabipeanut · 15/01/2009 11:50

Hi Ladylush - what's an HB?

I'm actually feeling a bit more cheery about this today. I did some looking over my old posts in the conception section and it seems I had some spotting 2 days before my AF was due. IF (and its a big if) that was implantation spotting then counting backwards would get me to be about 6 and half weeks when scan and bloods were taken.

I have had the odd freakishly long cycle in the last few months and I guess I could have ov'd late and then the bean could have taken its time to settle in.

Suddenly the gap between my dates and the scan and blood dates doesn't look quite so unbridgeable.

Would also explain why I haven't had as many symptoms as I thought I should......

Oh, a heartbeat - no there wasn't but the sonographer said that at 6 weeks that wouldn't be that unusual. You might see one at that stage or you might not.

Oh, wasabi, it's a nightmare, isn't it? You can tie yourself in knots calculating and recalculating every possibility. This happened to me. Like you I had an early scan, which dated baby as 6 weeks - sac but no HB. I was convinced I would be 10 days further on. Had an agonising week's wait and finally next scan showed healthy heartbeat. DD2 is now 6 years old. Hope it turns out well for you.

wasabipeanut · 15/01/2009 12:16

Clarice - did you just wait a week between scans? Not sure if/when to book?

wasabi - please try not to worry at this point. Everyone is different and I do believe that early scans often cause unnecessary worry.

When I was pregnant with dd2 I went for a scan (was about 7 weeks) and they could not see a heart beat, even with trans-vaginal. I was asked to come back to check for viability but I declined and at my 12 week scan all was well.

Then for this pregnancy I was also scanned at 5 or so weeks and they couldn't see anything except a gestational sack. I was told by a consultant that I had probably miscarried, which made no sense to me at all because I had tested positive with a HPT only 10 days before. I didn't believe her and felt that she couldn't possibly know if a miscarriage had occurred with the information she had. So I went home and figured that if it wasn't meant to be I would trust my body to miscarry -- but the baby was definitely there and I am now 27 weeks pg...

I have a retroverted uterus - so it is more difficult to see what's going on and I have never seen a heartbeat in any of my pregnancies until at least 9 weeks (and even then trans-vaginal) - any earlier and nothing shows up.

So try not to worry. I hope it all turns out well for you.

Thanks for that Electra - your persepctive is reassuring!

It had occured to me that ultrasounds aren't an exact art. Also, I had a c sec 16 months ago with ds and presumably there is scar tissue which might impede what you can see on a scan.

wasabi - glad you are feeling more positive

BabyBump2B · 16/01/2009 20:48

Hi Wasabi - any news on the HCG? I was put back by 5 days and then brought forward 5 days at the next scan. We can never tell the exact moment we conceived so you never know. Fingers crossed for you!
