Can't get my head around this - is there any possibility i am still pregnant??

Went for an early scan today due to brown spotting over the weekend. I think i am 8 weeks pregnant. They did an internal scan and said i looked as though i was about 6 weeks, yolk sac there and something was 19mm - sac? but no fetal pole yet. Made another appointment for 2 weeks for another scan. I broke down and said there is no way i could be 6 weeks. They said everything looks normal for a 6 week pregnancy and was i sure.

My dates are, Last period started on 8th November, Last had sex on 23rd November, First very very aint positive HPT on 4th December, HCG levels of 96 by 9th December.

What do you think? Is there any way the sonogropher could be wrong or that my assumptions about my dates could be wrong.

We have already cried for our dead baby but when we got home and talked about it we just got wondering. Am i just clutching at straws or is there a glimmer of hope??

I don't understand. Are you assuming that something is wrong with the baby which is why it only looks to be 6 weeks?

I would call your GP or the antenatal ward to discuss

fairywing · 06/01/2009 15:09

Im assuming it has stopped growing at 6 weeks. I did discuss this there and they said we just have to wait and see.

hiya,

sorry to hear you are stressed.

my DS1 who is now 4, when i was pregnant with him i thought i was 7 weeks pregnant, i had a bleed and went to the EPU, there was a sac but they couldnt see a heartbeat, they told me i was only 5 weeks pregnant. i couldnt understand how TBH.

I had to go back 2 weeks later and when i did there was a wee baby with a heart beat.

i hope this is the case for you too.

AnarchyAunt · 06/01/2009 15:11

Isn't this just confusion over dating? IE, you are going on LMP which makes you 8 weeks. But they are going on time since conception, which would be approx. 2 weeks later - so 6 weeks?

Best wishes.

SheWillBeLoved · 06/01/2009 15:13

6 weeks works out right for the date you last had sex which I think is more accurate than the start of your last period, when it's an unlikely time for most people to have sex or even have an egg in their tubes to fertilize.

But then sperm can also live inside you for a few days, so the last time you had sex doesn't mean much really.

I had a scan at what I thought was 7 weeks due to heavy bleeding/cramps, and a previous miscarriage. They put me back to 6+1 at the scan, and there was a baby and a heartbeat. You have to remember though that babies aren't robots and do develop quicker/slower than others in our slow cookers.

Hope everything is well at your next scan x

AnarchyAunt · 06/01/2009 15:17

23rd November is almost exactly 6 weeks ago.

The next scan should clear it up for you and I hope it goes well

lastboxoftampons · 06/01/2009 15:27

AnarchyAunt at all the scans that I've had, the sonographer's dates refer to LMP, not to conception.

Fairywing I don't think anything is conclusive until you go for the next scan. I know it's horrible, but that one will tell you much more. It is possible that you conceived later than you thought (do you have any idea when you ovulated?) sperm can live inside you for up to a maximum of 5 days (although it's more like 3) and scan dates are not always exact (margin of error is +/- 5 days, I think).

Good luck! I knwo the waiting is unbearable, but I'm afraid that's all you can do. {{{{{hugs}}}}}

fairywing · 06/01/2009 15:30

I thought i ov'd on 22nd but only because i thought i had ov pains. This is torture, how do we get through 2 weeks of wondering?

so sorry about this fairywing, its a tough one

if the yolk sac is less than 5mm it's not possible to see a heart beat, so reccomendations are that a rescan has to take place in order to compare... sometimes it has grown and you get to see the fhb, other times their are no changes and this means a missed miscarriage

also dates can be wrong, we can ovulate at different times... their are so many variables that can put your dates off

this is why a rescan is needed

it's the worst kind of limbo, where no one can give you an answer

twinmam · 06/01/2009 15:38

Poor you fairywing. It certainly sounds as if you could still be pregnant but I know what you must so want and need right now is to know for certain. I know nothing about this, but would taking another pregnancy test give you an idea? Or is that completely stupid? I really really hope this turns out well for you and that the next 2 weeks of waiting aren't too agonising.

Fozzie78 · 06/01/2009 15:39

Ahhh fairywing the waiting is the worst but dont lose hope theres some good explanations on here and all could be well, the dates do appear to be right for 6 weeks too.

Take it easy xxx

slug · 06/01/2009 15:42

Same thing happened to me fairywing. I thought I was 8 weeks, scan said 6 weeks, with brown blood and some red. That 6 week embryo is now an active 7 year old. Hang in there.

VillageMum · 06/01/2009 15:45

fairywing, this is bitter indeed. There is something positive you can do, rather than waiting two weeks in agony: go back to your hospital or GP (or get your GP to refer you if necessary), insist that you really don't feel you've got your dates wrong, and ask for a comparative 48-hour hcg blood test. If you have a developing pregnancy, then your hcg (pregnancy hormone) levels should be doubling every day. Bloods taken 48 hours apart should either show a clear rise in hcg, suggesting that all is fine, or a drop, indicating that the pg is no longer viable. There is still a wait involved but at least it's two days instead of two weeks. I did this when I was tentatively diagnosed with a missed mc last year and told to wait another week for a scan - I just couldn't bear it. In my case the outcome wasn't good; I really hope yours will be better. Thinking of you - may you get some answers soon. x

Nemoandthefishes · 06/01/2009 16:18

it could just be your dates are wrong. With this pregnancy I thought I was 2wks ahead of how far I am and didnt think there was any chance of being wrong but I was. Just try to relax while you wait which I know is horrendous

fairywing · 06/01/2009 16:48

Well its probably completely pointless but i just did a clearblue digital which came up within seconds pregnant +3 making me 5+weeks according to that. So theres still something going on i guess. I can see two weeks of heartache until we know for sure.

Fairywing, relax, chill, take it easy, you stressing is not going to make the situation any better and if you are pg it is only going to affect the baby.

Good luck, fingers crossed.

We had a similar thing - and we were told that cycle length and luteal phase had a lot to do with it - also even if you know when you ov'd you can't be sure of conception date so hang in there.

Our first scan didn't even show a foetal pole but 2 weeks later we had a definite baby Panicking isn't going to help your body try and stay calm and see what the next scan says - good luck!

twinmam · 06/01/2009 19:05

Think positive pg test a good sign fairywing?? Does anyone else know if this is the case?

SheWillBeLoved · 06/01/2009 20:09

If the sonographer said that everything was normal for a 6 week pregnancy - then to be honest i'd be happy with that.

I think most people get put back a week or two when they have their first scan - you just got put back sooner because of an earlier scan.

Don't worry, it'll do more harm than good. There's nothing at all you can do to change the outcome whatever it might be, so relax for the next couple of weeks, look after yourself, keep popping your folic acid, and hope for the best. x

purplemyrtle · 06/01/2009 22:11

I'm sorry it wasn't more reassuring. Hope you manage to look after yourself and not be too stressed til the scan.

daisy5 · 06/01/2009 23:21

fairywing - please please don't worry. there is a really good chance that all is fine. you can conceive later than thought and scans at that time can be out by up to five or so days. keep super busy and try not to dwell on your worries - I know how hard that is.

fairywing · 07/01/2009 09:26

Thank-you ladies, i am so confused and don't know what to think any more. I just feel pretty numb about it all today. Have had the day off work to get my head around things but will probably go in tomorrow to get back to some normality. I don't know whats easier assuming the worst of hoping for the best. Being in limbo is horrible.

VillageMum · 07/01/2009 12:17

fairywing, have you thought of moving the scan up by a week? They should still be able to tell you after a week if all's developing as it should. Good luck, thinking of you.
