Um...strange cravings anyone?
For all of my pregnancies i have totally and utterly wanted to eat talcum powder..although have never been brave/stupid enough.. so substituted it with that sherbert in a yellow tube with the liquorice in
And...loo roll... sitting there chewing it. Eek.
Plus i worked on the roads through the summer and could not get enough of the smell of tar. And diesel smell.. don't get me started! Lol

I bought lots of wool things last time round and used to sniff it. It made my mouth water. Nothing like that yet this time and wool doesn't do anything for me. Quite fancy a bit of beetroot but it'll set off my heartburn! Crave getting pissed but thats a Christmas while pregnant thing that'll pass!

bunsen · 21/12/2008 21:21

Can imagine the sherbert would be nice but chewing toilet roll is a bit unique I reckon! LOL

SnowySunshine · 21/12/2008 21:24

When my mum was in hospital just before having me, the woman in the next bed was desperate to get hold of Pauline Fowler's powder blue teapot, smash it up with a little hammer & eat the pieces

I'm 24 weeks & so far have been a bit obsessed with vinegar - pickled eggs being the strangest, as I hate them.

hotCheeseBurns · 21/12/2008 21:26

I carried a bar of soap around in my handbag to lick when noone was looking.

Imperial leather, delicious.

Made my throat really sore though so I had to ration myself - no bites and no making a big lather on my tounge, just tiny licks.

SnowySunshine · 21/12/2008 21:27

Out of interest, how pregnant were you when these cravings kicked in? I'm still hoping for something funny - there's still time, right?

hotCheeseBurns · 21/12/2008 21:38

IIRC it was the 3rd trimester

metoo2222 · 21/12/2008 21:40

rubber bath mats....

festivedollyx · 21/12/2008 22:16

with dd1 i craved peaches and dd2 petrol fumes and firelighters!!! my god i couldnt get enough. sadly nothing this time so far (23 weeks)

pinktree · 21/12/2008 22:29

concrete, plaster, rubble and the gray dust you get on a building site - I licked my parents newly plastered sitting room wall last week. Ssh don't tell anyone...
I'm 29 weeks.

I do think its been better since I've been given iron tablets however.

babylove123 · 22/12/2008 06:22

I didnt get any funny cravings (DD now 3 weeks). I had a stage with toast, orange juice and in 3rd trimester - nutrigrain bars. When through boxes of them!

However my mum had a strange one with me....kippers coated in melted chocolate. Ewww!

oopsIstuffedaturkey · 22/12/2008 09:29

I just had to have anchovies (the salted ones) mixed with tinned pineapple, tinned peas (only Spar brand would do) and mango chutney - mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I ate bowl fulls every day and think the people at the shop across the road thought I was nuts when I turned up one day and burst into tears as they has no peas left, the ordered a special case in just for me.

Paperclipcollector · 22/12/2008 11:42

With my first it was the smell of shoe polish - I am sure I would have eaten it given half the chance. With my second it was Windolene (the pink stuff). Every available window within reach got cleaned EVERY day.

BlueSapphire77 · 22/12/2008 19:32

Omg lol glad i don't seem to be the only one with a mad craving... and i don't swallow it just chew it, think it's the dry taste or something, didn't bother telling midwife in case she had something to moan about but have had this with all pregs and no harm done so..
Yeah i think someone said firelighters as well, sooooo tempted but just sit there smelling them, and chalk with my son until i got iron tablets then it went away, on the food side i have eaten vegetables until they come out of my ears so thats kinda good lol
Thanks for being brave n making me feel better
New buildings and the smell of old books (library) and the smell inside a church has gripped me this past few weeks .. first time in years i've been in a church lol!!

mummyplonk · 22/12/2008 19:43

I used to sit n sniff my Mums laundry, (I wanted to suck the clothes) but instead I went home and had condensed milk on toast, obviously far more normal.

BlueSapphire77 · 22/12/2008 20:20

Lol! Brilliant.. washing powder is such a nice smell

I think it's dry / musty smells for me then..
lol

Glad your other half was so thoughtful boob ;) .. mine would think i am nuts. The only thing he has enjoyed about me being preg is that my sex drive has also gone through the roof, maybe its cos he's a dried out old git of 38 and i'm only after his smell

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2008 09:57

OMG I thought it was just ME!!!!
Am 36 weeks pg, (DC2) and just craving the smell of petrol, new car interiors, chemically things IYKWIM. Tar or creosote would do tbh... but I can't smell any of these things round me
No food cravings though, and didn't have any cravings whatsoever with DD (this one is a DS).

Nikkiemadisonandbump · 26/12/2008 23:06

Hiya,
Just a quick qustion,
These random things that you eat/smell do they not make you poorly? i.e. licking soap? plastered walls??? just curious really!
Im on my 2nd pg n unfortunatley I seemed to b the weirdo that doesnt get cravings!!!

stuffedfullofturkey · 26/12/2008 23:19

the smell of chhocolate makes me wanna puke at the moment and i really LOVE the appetising smell of any chicken flavoured cat treats have even eaten 1 small chicken and cheese cat treat from tesco im only 8 weeks pregnant 2

EachPeachPearMum · 26/12/2008 23:21

ooh- yummy stuffedfull..... not!

BlueSapphire77 · 27/12/2008 16:24

Nikki its like a craving for smells and stuff as well as food..my 'normal' food craving is for cooked dinners.. esp veg, so seems i'm making up for the mad ones lol
I used to wonder how people KNEW what it was they were craving, i mean, when i wasn't preg i couldn't imagine what on earth would make my friend mix marmite with peanut butter and jam on a sarnie but now i understand and truly sorry for laughing lol

MichaelaS · 27/12/2008 17:43

i'm really looking forward to getting cravings - i'm 7+2 today and I normally eat mad things (when not pregnant) so I can't wait to see what my brain comes up with.

maybe it'll be meat though - i'm veggie and my worst fear is craving meat, think i'd have to eat some if I did want it though, i'm a great believer in the idea that cravings are your bodies way of saying you need something (although not sure what soap and chemicals are telling you!!)

so, normally I crave carbs. one of my all time favourites is the potato waffle sandwich - warburtons white medium sliced bread, toasted on 1 side, 2 waffles in the middle, grated cheddar cheese, mayo and lots of ketchup. mmmmh.

does anyone else get cravings when not pg?

BlueSapphire77 · 27/12/2008 20:50

Yeah but being preg is a brill excuse lol
Its like blaming a fart on the dog
