I don't think I had a maternity coat - really can't remember what I wore, but have you tired H&M or NEXT?

puppydavies · 25/11/2008 10:52

i had a furry bench jacket that (for some inexplicable reason) had zips up the back so i could open them to give bump room. before that i just got a cheap coat from peacocks in an 18/20, did the job

mrsgboring · 25/11/2008 10:54

Charity shop. And a market stall fleece in XXXXL

ErnestTheBavarian · 25/11/2008 11:01

dh got me one from Bennettons. saw me through, and am wearing it not baby is 5 months old - does well for when baby in sling too. didn't have one the other times tho - think just used warm jumpers and a big, or dh coat

It's really annoying, isn't it? I thought i'd do without & just layer up, but ended up feeling like the Michelin Man. Eventually gave in, and trudged round shops in Exeter for what seemed like hours. Eventually found one in Debenhams, Red Herring range. Did cost £55 though, but is really nice coat which doesn't really look maternity style, and i'm sure i'll wear it post-baby!!
HTH xx

I got a lovely military style swing coat from the Top Shop maternity range. Did cost £65 but its lovely and I reckon I'll be able to ebay it for someone else to enjoy next year. Mothercare have a very similar one in too.

rascal1979 · 25/11/2008 12:00

My MIL bought me a lovely swing style coat - non maternity but lots of room from Matalan! - unfortunatley I had my DD about 2 weeks later (9 weeks early!) so didn't get full use out of it but it's a lovely coat and I intend to wear again this year!

Whineytinker · 25/11/2008 12:01

I didn't I wore my usual one with a huge 12 ft scraf to bridge the gap.

stacysmom · 25/11/2008 12:16

I was getting totally fed up with this problem too and it looked like I was going to spend the whole winter with only a Rohan waterproof that fitted me until I realised I had a TX Maxx on my doorstep. I spent a good half hour scouring the rails of winter coats and ended up finding a woollen tie-front, swing/cape style coat for £40. It's got room to grow with my bump, it's so cosy, smart enough for work and an absolute bargain. The only disadvantage being fellow commuters can't tell if I'm just large or pregnant and in need of a seat!

babyc · 25/11/2008 12:23

I got a swingy coat from French Connection in a size too big - it has two toggles that do up just over the bust line, so is swingy enough to cover any bump - I've got loads of space left to grow into and it is really warm with two well placed pockets to feel bump through s I walk. Smart and fashionable too and goes with everything, was about 140

buickmackane · 25/11/2008 12:28

I got a swing style coat from Primark for £17 which still fits me and my bump is huge.

TinkerBellesMum · 25/11/2008 12:43

I'm wearing a mans coat but it's not that warm TBH. I was going to buy the nice Parker that JoJo have but after being sold out for ages the sizes 16+ have disappeared. They are all so expensive I have rascals problem, I want to buy a coat but my baby is looking imminent.

JoJo, Blooming Marvellous, Next, H&M and Top Shop all have maternity coats. There is also a shop on eBay that sells nice maternity coats.

Another option is a babywearing coat if you plan on babywearing, it will be cheaper in the long run than buying two coats.

Thanks for your responses! Have spotted a few on ebay I just have to remember to bid in time which is tricky at the mo what with the pregnancy brain mush!

I've been so disappointed with the shops perhaps I'll have to take a trip to where there's an h&m as It's recommended so often.

Don't you hate spending more for maternity clothes when the quality is so rubbish and more often than not so ugly?! But also it's as if pregnant women don't need coats - there is so little choice or there are just jackets....DON'T THEY GET IT, IT'S FREEZING!!!

Sorry had to have a moan

Any other ideas welcome

Online store - everyday maternity dot com. Have never used them before but I was desperate, googled maternity coats and found them. I'd use them again based on this experience.

Here is my nice coat...

TinkerBellesMum · 25/11/2008 13:15

pinktree, not forgetting they tend to be wool. I'm allergic to it as is Tink so I find it even harder to find a coat.

eBay

elkiedee · 25/11/2008 13:31

I'm quite reluctant to get another coat for just two months or so, but keep meaning to buy a wrap that I can cover up the front where my coats don't button up with. I got as far as looking at the M&S website where there are a few for £20-£30.

tinkisallreadytositonthetree · 25/11/2008 13:36

mine is a normal coat from sainsburys £25 got it in a size 20 fits great has plenty of room

auntyspan · 25/11/2008 13:44

I got mine from M&S Limited Collection, here - it was £55 but will be planning on selling it on Ebay later next year

cupsoftea · 25/11/2008 13:46

Swing coats are great for preg - checkout h&m

broodymom · 25/11/2008 14:45

I just got a lovely wool wrap/poncho from peacocks looks great with a polo neck and gloves! also got a pullover micro fleece from millets they are very stretchy so show bump nicely.

fillybuster · 25/11/2008 14:47

I gave up on a 'proper' maternity coat as they were all so expensive and I didn't even like them that much. In the end I used a mans' puffa jacket from GAP that I had bought years ago in the sales and my old (also men's actually....) RAF army coat which had been in a box since my grungy uni days but actually washed out nicely! I'd recommend trawling ebay for something similar - it looked smart and military (still in this season), hung nicely to my ankles and covered the bump right the way to the end!!

fillybuster · 25/11/2008 14:51

Mine is exactly this but I didn't pay stupid markups as I got it from an army outlet.

DumbledoresGirl · 25/11/2008 14:52

Bought mine 3 sizes too big in a jumble sale for 10p. I still wear it actually as I don't think it was correctly sized. It is big on me (so I can wear loads of thick jumpers underneath!) but not that big.

I cannot imagine buying one new for so little use.
