and the conversation continues...

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
hedgepig · 22/12/2008 15:59

Hi Herb I'm a bit confused (it really doesn't take much) so was the 1:99 risk from the bloods alone or the combided risk from the bloods (triple test???) and nucal?

anyway sound like you have made your decisions so well done, try and relax a bit now (I know this is easier said than done)

goldenpig · 22/12/2008 16:02

Hi ladies

Anyone have any idea about nuchal fold measurements (from scan alone, not tests) at 20 weeks, and whether they increase after the 12 week measurement?

Just back from the 20 week scan where the doctor said that the protocol had changed and that they had to ask again if I wanted to know about any findings. We said no, thanks, but now am all worried as the fold measurement has increased, and we were told that it was low at 12 weeks.

Such a horrible doctor that I just cried when we left, none the wiser as I felt I had no right to find out if eveything was OK as we had opted out of tests.

SOrry, if this is incoherent babble.

hedgepig · 22/12/2008 16:11

((((big hugs)))) goldenpig what an arse the Dr sounds ! As the baby grows the area at the back of the neck will grow too or the baby would look most odd. The nucal translucency scan is only done up to 13+6weeks and so is only valid as an indicator of DS up to that cut off, I would have a look at my notes but they have gone back to the hospital sorry. try not to worry I'm sure it will be fine

johnworf · 22/12/2008 16:12

goldenpig all I can tell you about my 20 weeks scan was that the sonographer told me that discounting the nasal bone (which I was told is inaccurate after 13 weeks for measuring) there are other soft markers for Downs and that an experienced sonographer should spot these immediately. These include the chin (downs don't have much of one), heart and kidney defects. He said that the fold at the back of the neck was immediately noticeable if the baby had downs.

My hospital's policy was that they would tell you of their findings and to not have the scan if you didn't want to know (afterall, 20 weeks is the anomaly scan).

goldenpig you really do have to develop a thick skin and stand your ground with these doctors. Don't be bullied by them. Read up and make your own informed choice. I had to say no to testing so many times and be adamant as they think they can railroad you into doing what they think is right...when really all that counts is what you and your OH think is right.

Please, be firm. You'll be much happier when you are in control and making the decisions

Hope this helps.

goldenpig · 22/12/2008 16:20

thanks kind ladies for getting back so quickly - really appreciate it.

The only way to be pregnant is to live in a cave and deliver the baby yourself, but, sadly, we cannot, eh?

I am absolutely fine with waiting ages in the clinic, but after nearly three hours (with a 19-monther and OH in tow), I think my nerves were shattered. I also get a bit peeved, to say the least when they say, "date of birth?" Followed immediately by "have you had the tests?"

You are so right, we all need to stand our ground - you'd have thought us 'elderly' ladies would be capable of that, eh?

Tee2072 · 22/12/2008 16:32

Nope, ermintrude DH is 100% Scottish!! He just thinks he's funny!

Although I am having a triple test on 5th Jan, I am really leaning towards keeping the baby no matter what. I think I am mostly doing it for as much information as possible. If I know the child has DS or other disorder, I can plan for it. DH hasn't quite gotten to this point yet, but I do think this is a place where I get more say!!

Oh you brave souls going out today!! I am dreading the brief walk to the bus station tomorrow to get up to Derry! There is no way I am going any where near a store!

herbaceous · 22/12/2008 16:47

Hedgepig - the 1:99 was from the combined test. That was just for Downs.

Edwards and Patau were highly unlikely...

sparklingreactions · 22/12/2008 16:48

anyone here a midwife?

sparklingreactions · 22/12/2008 16:56

all replies have said they didnt understand my post so ill try again would REALLYYY appreciate if anyone could give me knowlogable answer as im really confused lol here i go...

i had a period may 25th 08
i have a 35 day cycle
i had sex june 16t 08
had a scan that showed 8 weeks on july 30th (this put my period at a week later than it was but minus the 2 weeks before i concieved it pretty much went back to the day i concieved)
had a 2nd scan that showed 13+1 (4 days less that the 1st scan showed they took my due date of 15th march 09 from this)
then 3rd scan at 21 weeks(tied in exactly with the 1st scan)
my due date is march 14
my question is would you trust this or could i have gotton pregnant before that period the month before as ppl keep commenting how 'big' i am for 28 weeks! would you trust these scans as i dont want 2 go over by a month could it be possible? anyone please help xxxxx

Tee2072 · 22/12/2008 17:32

I understood your post perfectly. You need to: -

a. tell your MW or OB about your 35 day cycle
b. trust the scan
c. not worry so much about due dates! They are pretty arbitrary anyway!

A lot of women have bleeds after they conceive. This is the part that you don't seem to be understanding!! Some women bleed every month at the same time as their period would be due.

A scan is not going to be 3 - 4 weeks off. 1 or 2 at the most. Truly!

sparklingreactions · 22/12/2008 17:39

thankyou so much 4 the answer i think thats the bit that people are gettin abit confused about tho i havent had a bleed i had a period before i got pregnant on the 25th of may an got pregnant on the 16th of july i think and because i have a 35 day cycle i will have concieved slightly later i think i just needed 2 know if the scan could be a month out from my dating scan making me pregnant like the month before thanx for reassureing me xxxxxxx

mrsboogie · 22/12/2008 19:23

heloo all

Shopping all done!! Thank goodness. Now just need to get horrible work do out of the way and it's chillin' time.

OP posts:
jeanjeannie · 22/12/2008 21:44

Evening all. Woah - soooo tired...ZZZzzzzz! Going to see santa is exhausting!

Sparkling I have to say that my bleed after I was preggie was a pretty darn convincing 'period'! I'd say that the scan would be pretty accurate around the 20 wk mark - certainly no more than a week and a bit. Simply as the sonographer will be able to see certain bits that have developed and they'll pretty much date the baby. HTH - panic not and relax knowing your LO is doing really well

herb that sounds like a nice decision - good for you! I was led to believe that the bloods are really important - as all babies develop so differently so the nuchal fold is not a good enough marker on its own.

goldenpig what an ARE the doctor sounds Our hospital is like jw's* by the sound of it - they ask you not to attend a 20 wk scan if you don't want to know the findings. As far as I know - and I had a 1:2 odds for downs on the scan alone the nuchal fold measurement is pretty defunct after 13+6 and it was the man who actually invented it (prof Nikolidies) told me that himself! My 1:2 turned out to be fine - DD2 is now 6mths and fine

I'm all for standing my ground....I reckon they'll never want to see me back in Milton Keynes Maternity and as for Wycombe - well, following the DD1 lost waters fiasco - my DP sends shivers down one particular consultant's spine I'm surprised they let me back to have DD2

Lazy day tomorrow. Just gonna pack for the journey up to Notts - wrap some pressies and do some washing. Bliss. Oh, except my period has started with a vengence - I thought I may have a few months grace after the half-hearted effort last month but no......it's darn painful....pah - should I get preggie again to avoid them.....?

mrsboogie · 23/12/2008 00:00

oooh yes jj you should!

am regulary hinting along similar lines to OH but nursery costs £35 a day so its probably not a runner

ehm what was the DD1 lost waters fiasco?

OP posts:
johnworf · 23/12/2008 07:23

mrsb think of all the working tax credit nursery vouchers you'll get! ha ha ha. If any of us get up the duff over the festive period, my money is on JJ.

I'm officially finished now so I'm (I think the word you were searching for y'day mrsb was chillaxing) putting my feet up...I wish I ended up doing the big xmas shop y'day that DH was meant to do. He stayed in bed He is not in my good books at all. As his pennance he last night hoovered the hall, stairs, landing and the bedrooms. That's just the start methinks.

We're pretty much all set and tomorrow just sees me playing satan santa and dropping off all the presents to the children....although I have to start tonight with my DD1 as she is driving straight to Edinburgh tomorrow afternoon for Christmas.

Think we have found a bedtime for K now. She's starts grumbling around 10pm so I put her in her crib and that's it..don't hear her until 7am (actually as I type she's still asleep). My prayers were answered finally when I got a child that slept...none of my other 3 did....until they were 3! Thank goodness she does though as I don't have the energy at my time of life (snarf).

I think like JJ my hospitals wouldn't be wishing me back in a hurry....but being firm gets things done and everyone knows where they stand. It pissed me off that just because they're doctors they thought they knew what was best for me more than I did...ok, ok, if it had been life or death, then sure. But I just felt like they were bullying me half the time. I think though that once you've challenged them once, they usually get off your case.

Tee2072 · 23/12/2008 07:50

Morning guuurrlls

Well DH and I did our typical 'ah f* it' and opened the XMas gifts to each other and from my family last night! We usually do it the morning before we head up to his parents, rather than take extra stuff up with us. But DH was looking through On Demand Movies and was about to pay £3.99 for Iron Man when I said, with much meaning 'why don't we open our presents instead?' We've agreed that next year we'll take them up with the baby!

So DH gave me gorgeous earrings and I gave him Amazing Xmen Vol 2 and Iron Man 2 disk set.

We are bad bad people.

johnworf · 23/12/2008 08:42

lol@tee you naughty people! It's really frustrating isn't it when you can see someone you've bought for about to buy it again for themselves and it's like arrrrrrrrrrgggg I have to tell them otherwise they'll have it twice! I know exactly what I'm getting from DH before I open it as I've ordered it myself. I'd love him to present with me a lovely original gift that I have no idea he's bought but in the real world, it isn't going to happen. Ah well, it's really no big deal in the grand sceme of things.

Seems everyone will be heading off somewhere in the coming 24 hours? I'm going nowhere I'm pleased to say. I'll still be sat on the sofa watching crap tv, eating handfuls of Maltesers But, hope you all have a safe journey!

jeanjeannie · 23/12/2008 09:17

Morning all. Slept again!!!

MrsB gosh £35 for nursery - it's £25 for a morning here WAH! Think that's Home COunties prices....thieves!! No vouchers for us self-employed !

My waters fiasco was as follows - in a nutshell:
At 26 weeks - waters went splat on the floor. Got some in a pot ran off to hospital. Was told I'd pee'd myself - not to be stupid - go home and they threw away the pot without testing. Carried on until at 29 weeks I knew it was wrong - went to hospital and all hell broke loose! Had steroid jabs - kept in and then because the baby could have arrived at any minute - had to phone around the country for a maternity bed with a SCBU unit cot for under 30 wk baby! Ended up in Milton Keynes where the consultant there said no baby was arriving but an infection was the danger. Wycombe kicked up a fuss - tried to re-admit me, so DP blinded them with science about how infection spreads in hospital etc, etc and secured me a three times a week check as an outpatient! The whole farce ended up with the dismisal of a midwife and a disciplinary for two other members of staff THERE - THAT's the type of trouble I like to cause

tee tee hee! And lovely earings - well done you!!

What am I going to do in Notts with no internet???!!!

Day in today - tiding and packing and washing ....the list goes on but pretty stress free

ermintrude13 · 23/12/2008 09:36

JJ, you can come and use my pc in Nott. I'll only ask for a little something in return - maybe you can spend half an hour entertaining my in-laws on my behalf, mwa ha ha . His mum's no trouble but his dad will want to talk about how awful everything is especially for pensioners, all these foreigners blah blah blah, teachers have it easy, the welfare state encourages idleness, the current recession is that Tony Blair's fault etc etc. Think you can cope with that? I usually point out that when his 16yr old daughter got pregnant he'd been v happy for her to get a council house and all the benefits she was entitled to. Then I make a very high-falutin' comment about right-wing monetary policies and rush off to put something in the oven (usually my head). He still tries, every time.

JW, I'm staying put too. Now the bunker is full except for the monstrous freakish boneless stuffed turkey which DH will pick up tonight (the kids were doing impressions of a boneless turkey round the table at breakfast, I think DS believes they are bred like that) we have no need to leave the house until 2009. As for the day itself, my signal for relaxing is the Royle Family at 9pm (which the in-laws will hate because it's funny and occasionally slightly rude hahahahaha) then bed - ah, bliss.

But today, bathroom cleaning followed by lots of cooking to reduce the amount of work on the day. . May have to pop down to Gregg's for a cheering piece of lard and protein at lunchtime to break up the day .

To all who are leaving for family and friends today: have a good one! xx

goldenpig · 23/12/2008 10:19

Thanks jeanjeannie - soooooo right re not going for the scan once that decision is made, I will pass that wisdom on to others with similar views on the matter, as this will very much be my last!

Enjoy Christmas in Notts, all you Midlands ladies - my in-laws are there, but not attending this year because of my "blood pressure". Ahem!

Happy festive season.

redtabby · 23/12/2008 11:25

Thanks for the messages about my lack of weight gain, I feel better now. I am generally starting to worry a little less but every now and then get a panic.
My Christmas is easily sorted, it's just me and lovely hubby this year (his daughters, who normally live with us, are with their mother, and we have no other family in this country). I am going to cook some small bird (maybe a pheasant?) and relax in and out of bed! Sound like heaven actually. Happy Christmas everyone!

hedgepig · 23/12/2008 12:02

morning all, the washing machine is on turbo trying to get everything washed before we go to my moms in Shropshire tomorrow. I'm rather concerned how Oliver will sleep in a strange place, but I have told my dear parents if he doesn't sleep we are coming home.

Tee bad girl opening our pressies, Santa will not come next year , actually very pragmatic of you our boot will be stuffed full of pressies that we have to disguise in boxes so young B does not notice, he is a scarcely observant child.

JW my DH is in the same mold as your DH, the lovely boots I told him to get me are just waiting to be wrapped (and I insist he does it cos it is one step too far to wrap your own pressies) although there is a mystery Amazon box that turned up today (I hope it's not the DVD my mom is getting me)

JJ what a nightmare about your waters, you have mentioned it before but not in such detail.

johnworf · 23/12/2008 12:13

ermintrude I'm finding that the older I get, the more right wing I'm becoming. I started out as a do-gooding left wing fanatic, was an active CND member, been a probation volunteer, did my degree in social policy etc etc...but this time round I've actually voted Tory and I never EVER though I would (if you'd had a crystal ball and told me I'd do this when I was 17 I probably would have slit my wrists). Anyhoo....I'm finding myself less tolerant of those who sponge, won't work, world owes me mentality. Actually not as bad as my DH who wants to put all rapists, child molesters, thieves, convicts in general along with benefits scroungers on an island where they can all kill and fornicate with each other.

I'd probably like your FiL. I'll warm up the Doblo ready for xmas day and get to yours for about 8pm

I'm having a very bad day foodwise. It started well with wholemeal toast and poached egg and then quite suddenly went off piste with two cocktail sausage rolls, a flake and half a tube of pringles . I'm wearing my fat pants with elastic in the waist in readiness for the ever expanding waistline. I'll be back in maternity clothes at this rate I said I wouldn't go overboard and I haven't bought many treats...but I'm eating them all. Help me.
Signed

ladymac · 23/12/2008 12:28

Dear Fatty,

If you will insist on giving pringles and flake house room you're just asking for trouble.

Yours,

Mrs Lardbelly
North London

jeanjeannie · 23/12/2008 12:36

Ms Gutbucket of Bucks writes...
Fatty - you are going about it all wrong. Ditch the wholemeal bread and the rest of your cardboard goody-two-shoes-carbs and stock up on just crap. Then you'll have no healthy food to compare the tasty bad stuff with. Eh, voila - your elasticated waists will now be 'fit for purpose'....or, if you keep on eating, fit for a porpoise
