We've now filled up the last thread - and the two before that! Seems that there are a lot of us old girls out there getting ourselves into trouble

So - if you've just found yourself to be with child or have a LO and you've hit (or about to hit - we'll let you sneak in just under the radar!)the big 4 0, then come say Hi!

There is always a spare comfy chair - plenty of cake and many old ladies to listen to your moans! Think of the lovely ladies knitting shreddies - only we're not sporting a blue rinse, but wearing cashmere and kitten heels

Hello regular ladies. I avoided putting FAT, F*cked or Knackered in the title - tempting as it was

Sorry, it's Book Start, not Sure Start...OOPs

Tee2072 · 11/11/2008 10:26

Morning all.

Wow, I must be really lucky. I ring my doctor, I either see her or one of the other GPs in the practice that day if its an emergency or no more than 2 days later if it isn't. I really think it helps that NI is a small country! Even smaller than England!

Had a bad nights rest, kinda anxious about today. Just a few more hours and I'll know, I hope, if there's an actual baby in there or just an empty sack.

jeanjeannie · 11/11/2008 10:32

Oh tee lots of thoughts coming your way.....I hope the scan will be fine and dandy ALways a nerve-wracking yet exciting time x

jw Surestart just has to be in your area - usually in a less-than-well-off neighbourhood!
Bookstart I think is available to all - I think. Definately not attached to benefits though - as we don't get any! It's not great - it just gives you a few freebies...although the material that comes with it is written for women like your DSSs mum... ie: "try reading to your children"....!?!

Morning hegdepig hope you're getting some sleep over at Hpig towers!

mrsboogie · 11/11/2008 10:41

oh tee fingers crossed. I used to always feel like they were going to tell me there was nothing in there when I wnet for a scan and that it was all my imagination. Its very hard to beliee its real in the early stages.

I am still horribly full of cold. And worse - I think D is getting it - well the house has been full of it for over a week now. I am really worried - he seems v young to have it and there doesn't seem to be much you can do at his age. From what I have seen they say you should take them straight to the doctor - is this right does anyone know? Don't really want to take him out for a long walk in the freezing cold unless I have to.

hedgepig · 11/11/2008 10:57

sorry about the spelling JW I will try harder . Typing too fast cos Ben is off school and DH is at home to help so there is much pressure to get to the computer, so I have to type fast.
JJ I had an amazing nights sleep thanks, Oliver wouldn't settle at midnight so I took him into bed with me and he slept 'til 5:30 !!!!
MrsB I'm worried about colds too, both Ben and DH have one. My health visitor is coming for the big weigh in today so I will ask her what to do if Ol gets it.

ermintrude13 · 11/11/2008 11:10

Completely missed University Challenge, grrr. Paxman's intelligence is attractive but he says too many daft things about how hard it is to be a white middle-aged middle-class male at the BBC which make him sound like a silly old fart. But JW, we can't control our fantasies, can we?

Tee, can't remember whether I wished you luck on the Due in June thread, but anyway here it is again: GOOD LUCK!. Really hope all goes well at the scan.

johnworf · 11/11/2008 11:48

Is that so JJ?? Hadn't realised it wasn't very good. Think I'll probably give that one a miss if it's for thick people.

No Sure Start here JJ - not to my knowledge anyway. Although HV mentioned there's a Children's Centre in the middle of scrote land (the council estate down the road) if I'd like to go. Apparently no one uses it as the mums are too busy in the cafe's in Bury town centre; meeting other like minded mums, smoking, gossiping while their child sits glumly in the buggy. That was her description btw, not mine. Shame no one ues it as they have some good things there like baby massage. I'd love to do that with K but can't at the mo for obvious reasons. What a waste of money. Why do they build these places where they are not used? Is it because the scrote mothers of this nation can't be bothered or is there no street cred in it? Answers on a postcard.

johnworf · 11/11/2008 11:52

hedgepig I'll forgive you this one last time Hope all goes well the weigh in today with little (big) Oliver

mrsb whadya mean take LO to the docs???? NO way Hosé!!!! Tell them to come to you! That's what they're there for Don't risk Darragh out in the cold wind.

Totally agree that Paxo can be a pompous old prick sometimes but that's why I loves him

ladymac · 11/11/2008 11:53

Tee good luck with the scan. I'm crossing my fingers all will be ok today.

jw I forget to say how brilliantly Katherine must be doing to be on such a teeny weeny amount of oxygen. All power to her lungs! Bookstart - I seem to remember they give them to you at the weighing clinic, in fact we got the next set when we last went. Ask your HV about it, as you're probably not likely to set foot in a germy clinic.

Paxo doesn't do it for me, he's too full of himself for my liking. I can't actually think who does do it for me on the box at the moment. DH certainly didn't do it for me last night when he was snoring in my face!

Yes jj my little boy does speak rather nicely, doesn't he? He's better spoken than me that's for sure. Both my parents were born within the sound of Bow Bells so are official Cockneys. I'm just a bit North London! I was a bit peed off he said he was from Tufnell Park, as for the last 22 months we've lived in leafy Muswell Hill. Although he was brought up in Tufnell Park and his dad still lives there. I said he should have compromised by saying North London. I love him so much and am extremely proud of him. He's always been a bright boy, right from when he was tiny, though I did find him hard work to parent at times, he had an answer for bloody everything! I miss him terribly, though have found a website which allows me to call his Russian mobile for 4p a minute, which is better than Orange who were charging me a £1! So at least I can have nice long chats with him now

mrsboogie · 11/11/2008 12:41

are you serious? get them to come out to you jw do they still do that? When I rang to get an appointment to get a doc to look at him when I thought he had reflux the harridan on reception barked at me that there was no doctors available for three days. Take him to the 24 hr walk -in cininc in the town centre she said (I'm sorry but its junkie central in there - no way !).

jw have I missed something ? has K's O2 been reduced again? good news if so - still on target for Christmas!

jesus - just watching the news about the little boy who was murdered by the mother's boyfriend. It is heartbreaking. Every single agency who could have helped him let him down even though they all know he was being battered. Their excuse seems to be that the baby's mother lied to them about being with the boyfriend so they couldn't do anything to help. I just can't believe that a battered baby can be repeatedly admitted to hospital and allowed to be taken home again by its parents and no one can just stop this from happening.

johnworf · 11/11/2008 13:13

mrsb it seems that is the way nowadays that the agencies are just not getting to the ones that need them in time. I was talking to my HV about a similar thing when she was last here and she said that's she's getting tied up with social issues e.g. homeless mothers which was not her field. Instead those that need her go unnoticed...and those that really need her tell her 'to go and f**k herself and not come back'. She said after 30 years in the job, she hates it as it's changed so much from when she first started. She said it's because there aren't enough social workers in her opinion and the ones they've got, are bloody useless.

I think you need to be really firm with them over the phone mrsb. If the receptionist gives you grief, ask to speak to the doctor when surgery is finished. Mine usually phones us back when he's ready. They should still do home visits...as far as I know no surgeries have stopped this. However, you MUST think of Darragh and be persistent...no way would I lug him around in this weather to a walk in centre especially if there are unsavoury people about.

johnworf · 11/11/2008 13:19

mrsb just looked at NHS Direct and children under 6 says to call for advice. I bet if you rang them, they'd get your bloody GP out to you!!!!!!

Another site says babies under 3 months should always be seen by a doctor with a cold.

jeanjeannie · 11/11/2008 13:28

Just back from the slum estate up the road - and the singing was brill. All white middle class mummies who were making full use of the freebies.......as, like jw's HV says all the local mummies are off fagging it in the cafe!!

I know - it's madness. I think Surestart is fab but it's an awful lot of money to be spent on the likes of me and my friends who really don't need it. What do you do about those problem familes eh? Seems that they're growing in numbers. Always some when I was a kid but never this many.

Seems like Jamie Oliver has had more influence and kick-started the debate more than anyone. I know some folk can't stand him - but he certainly doesn't mind ploughing in at the unglamorous end of life. He's shown up some of these folk for what they are.

Thing is - most of the HV don't go to see those poor kids - cos they can tick the boxes with the likes of me and you. Same for social services. Probably feel scared some of them - I know I would.

Russian mobiles for 4p a min ladymac a bargin!! Oh Muswell Hill is lovely and no tube so it almost doesn't feel like London. My parents are both cockneys - been tracing my dad's history and one half of his lot are in Limehouse and Bethnal Green as far back as the 1730s! Seems like Nottingham (where Dad & Mum ended up) is a total breakaway!

mrsB I always whacked up the heating and gave Iris a nice bath - plenty of steam with an oily massage when she had a cold. Poor baby D We've so far avoided any colds here - not bad going for 5 mths.

It's windier than a windy thing in windy land today

OP posts:
mrsboogie · 11/11/2008 13:54

thanks jw and jj

yep I saw that about the three months thing as well in several places. I should say I don't think he has the cold as yet - just to my fretful eye he seems not quite himself - quite sleepy. I was hoping he had got away with it as he has been exposed to it for well over a week now. Also his first lot of vaccinations are next week - so hope he is ok for them.

God I've just remembered what a panicker I am when it comes to sick children.

johnworf · 11/11/2008 14:25

lol@mrsb you're no more panicky than any of us mums on here If you've any worries when you take him for his jabs, voice them while you are there and they'll check him over before they give them to him...and won't give them if he's unwell.

If he's sleepy then he's probably growing. They do that you know at his age

Pulling you leg mrsb...I know exactly how you feel....I am afterall, Mrs Neurotic!!!

mrsboogie · 11/11/2008 14:41

you have a bloody good reason to be mrs Neurotic jw - I'm only fretting and slathering on handgel every 2 mins cos we are full of cold - you have this for the whole winter! I can only imagine how stressful it is for you.

Speaking of sick children I don't understand why it is all over the news about this 13 year old girl who has decided she doesn't want a heart transplant to save her life. After being ill an on leukemia drugs for 8 yrs surely she is perfectly placed to make that decision for herself? Her parents are fully supportive so why is it news?

mrsboogie · 11/11/2008 14:44

some nice kids' bedding on here at a nice price ladies...

www.dorma.co.uk/wardrobe/c59572-1.html

lilibet · 11/11/2008 14:47

It's news because the Health Authority were about to take her to court to force her and then they changed their mind. It's a very tricky one, and I don't think I know enough about it.

How many people have full lives after heart transplants? She is very young to be making such a decision

jeanjeannie · 11/11/2008 14:49

I agree mrsB I was wondering the same thing myself - it's not like this girl isn't understanding everything fully. Brave girl...and very sad The last thing she needs is all this stress. Sounds to me like various departments/hospitals not communicating with each other. And you stress-away....it's what we do....it's in the job description....4th page in - paragraph 3

Verity is asleep
Operation 'sleep' will commence on Friday night. Which basically means no nipple comfort but cuddles and calming down. DP is going to give it a go as it's getting silly - all this sleeping for just an hour Obviously I'll feed her when hungry - but that cry is so different and easy to distinguish. And.....drum roll......we've finished the nursery. The floor is all laid - painted - just needs my finishing touch now. May pop off to John Lewis later for curtain material and stuff

Room for another oldie?? I'm sixteen weeks with number 4 and am finally starting to relax into this pregnancy. After having an MC in Feb I have been really anxious despite having had two good scans at 8 and 12 weeks. Heard the little heartbeat today and the midwife said he/she was kicking wildly so fingers crossed everything is going well. Will be knocking on the door of 44 when this one arrives. Looking forward to getting to know you all..

mrsboogie · 11/11/2008 15:05

I think she has leukemia as well lilibet so the heart transplant wouldn't necessarily mean a better life long term. She is a very brave girl without doubt.

ooh well done on the nursery jj good luck with operation sleep. Our problem is that Darragh is of the opinion that it is unreasonable to expect him to be in bed outside of the hours of 2am to 6am. He is perfectly happy to sleep elsewhere but not in bed. He actually sleeps very well in bed when he can be sneaked into it without him noticing or after his 4am feed.

jeanjeannie · 11/11/2008 15:11

tartetatin you are MOST welcome and CONGRATS! And with a name like tartetatin you have joined the most CAKE-friendly thread on MN

Think you'll find that there's a whole range of us oldies on here...from the ones who started young - and are going round for second helpings. Those of us who started having LOs late and others who just haven't stopped !

Feel free to join us in a moan, gossip or share a proud mummy moment. Some of us (like myself) popped our DC sometime ago (5mths in my case) but can't seem to get off the thread...but we are good for advice...well, occasionally! We'll get you a mug with your name on it and dust down a chair for you

How old are you other children?

lilibet · 11/11/2008 15:12

Hello Tartetatin a woman who names herself after cake is bound to fit in well here

johnworf · 11/11/2008 15:15

Welcome aboard tartetain....oh flip, just typing your name makes me dribble as it's my fav all time pud ! Well done on the good scan news. We're all over 40's in here and if you hang around long enough you'll see that we have great affection for cake and Daily Mail website gossip...and sleeplessness too

I've had my 4th in May age 41 (but I'm 42 now) after a 17 year gap.

You know this kid is actually Gillick competent so she can (I think) have her wishes taken into account legally. Rather sad that she is going to die but mebbe she's had enough of hospitals and her quality of life is crap. I dunno. Can't possbily imagine how it feels to be her parents

JJ will you have to try and cover up the smell of ya milk when cuddling? Isn't it the aroma of sweet mummy milk that gets her going?

mrsb I totally adore that bed linen link you've posted. I MUST buy it...oh bugger, DH will kill me if I do! Argh...it's a dilemma of which I cannot....stop...myself...from.....buying...oh poo. Bad influence you are. I shall site you in my grounds for divorce

To answer your question from ages ago mrsb yes, K is almost off the oxygen She is now on 0.01 which is 1 notch up from zero. That is...she will then be just in air...just like Darragh, Verity et al. She'll need to be weaned though (don't just take it off her and say...that's enough for you young lady!). It'll be 1 hour off starting tomorrow...then 2 ....then so on..until no more.

I'm kinda used to not going out TBH. DH tells me that his friend Sarah is popping back to the UK next month for a visit with her family (she lives in Japan now) and wants to visit. However, she has a 15 month old and can't possibly risk it...so I've had to tell DH that he'll have to go and see her in the pub!

mrsboogie · 11/11/2008 15:43

oh fab news jw the end of the O2 is in sight then!

you forgot to mention that we also have a thing for toyboys on here jw

welcome tartetatin with a name like that you will fit right in I am 40 and gave birth nearly nine weeks ago - also have a 20 yr old son. Others on here are actually pregnant but some of us just have no home to go to!

there are a couple of gorgeous sets of bedlinen on that site alright - but they are practically giving it away
