brownish, mucousy discharge at nine weeks pg - is this something to worry about?

I have had this on and off since Sunday. Sorryy, TMI, but when the discharge appears there's a lot of it and it's very thick and mucousy. It's also a brownish colour. I am really worried because I have had two miscarriages, one very recently.
I spoke to a midwife yesterday an she said it sounded like 'old blood' and to keep an eye on it, but it has happened since, albeit not ever time. Sometimes I feel a little crampy, but very little.
Can anyone offer any words of wisdom/comfort?

it could of course be old blood, and most probably is, but the sort of discharge you describe is often associated with ectopic pregnancy so i'm rather surprised your midwife hasn't referred you immediately for a scan to check. it would be unusual to have made it to 9 weeks without other symptoms (this may be her flawed reasoning) but it is not unheard of and requires investigation im(non-med)o.

Oh FGS you need to go for a scan - today preferably - yes it could be old blood, but equally it could be a partial miscarriage of one of twins, or as Aitch says an undiagnosed ectopic or even a molar pregnancy.

90% of the time it will be just old blood which your hormone levels aren't high enough to keep in there - esp. if it occurs over about the course of a week and when your period would normally be, but without a scan you have no way of knowing whether you are in the happy majority or the unlucky minority.

I do wish you luck with this - I went through it myself plus two miscarriages. But chances are you and the baby are fine.

Agree with Aitch, don't want to worry you but it should be investigated. Any pain?

Mucousy blood btw tends to be a non-worrying sign in pregnancy, it can be a tiny spot of blood mixed with the general pregnancy gunk that comes out. So that's v positive!

Seriously, no idea - nothing was apparent from the scans. The sonographer did say that the implantation looked 'messy' ie the embryo was fixed in a particularly squidgy bit of the uterus and had knocked a fair amount of cells out of the way to make it's way in.

i had what you describe for 3 weeks when pg. from 5-8 wks. I had 2 scans in that time and all was fine.

I am really pissed off now about my midwife's reluctance to get me in there and then for a scan.

It could be nothing, or it could be a sign of problems - unfortunatly the only way to tell is with a scan. Two of my miscarriages started off with days of brown discharge, but I also had some when pg with DS.

Ring your local EPAU and ask for a scan

and gateau i had no such discharge with my 2 eps and did have it with dd1... so i really wouldn't panic. it's most likely benign, but should imo be looked at.

V unhelpful MW esp. considering your history.
Fingers crossed for you, it's most likely nothing to worry about, but it's not like this uncertainty & worry will help. Insist on a reassurance scan!

If it's any consolation, I had the same thing. I went for a scan and was told I had a messy implantation bleed. I went on to carry to full term. I also had had several miscarriages previously.

surely if it was an ectopic pregnancy you would be doubled up with pain - could be nothing could of course be another miscarriage sadly- most units if you have hAD TWO MISCS WILL GIVE A REASSURANCE SCAN AT ABOUT 8 WEEKS BUT THAT WILL ONLY TELL YOU THAT EVERYTHING IS OK AT THAT MOMENT - WHOOPS pressed the caps lock by mistake!!! Hope it resolves well

aquarius, your misguided attitude to ectopic symptoms has resulted in many women having emergency surgery, i'm afraid. ectopics just aren't that predictable.

I had this, not for a week at a time, but twice for two days each, and the result is currently running around almost naked apart from her shoes!

Pavlov- i had to keep re-reading your post because I thought it was because YOU had been running round naked with only your shoes.

Time to find my specks.

Hi gateau- i had the same at 7 weeks and really panicked.
she said it was implantation bleeding that had not been discharged.
now 22 weeks and no further probs.
if they have an Early preg unit at the hospital they will see you pretty uick and have a reassurance scan.

sorry Aitch for having an opinion!! Is this your personal experience or field of expertise? Thought pain had something to do with it though?

I had this at 12 week and like you worried, i also have had previous miscarriages.
I went to the doctors who got me a scan at early pregnancy unit, Scan was fine thank god!!
I am now 16 weeks
