... anybody experienced this? What did you do? I've been vegetarian 15 years but I keep thinking about meat. My husband will be so pleased!! But it feels wrong!

my nearly 20 yrs of vegetarianism ended when I got pregnant with dd in 2004, I still don't eat much meat but really had a fair amount when pregnant

Sushipaws · 16/09/2008 17:04

I'm a veggie and I craved Burger King Bacon Cheese Burgers when pregnant. I was low on iron and it stopped when I started taking suppliments. I made myself Not Bacon Quorn Burgers instead and ate so much it made me a bit ill

MrsMattie · 16/09/2008 17:04

I'm not veggie, but my usual diet consists of lots of veggie stuff, fish and a bit of chicken. Pregnancy is the only time I crave red meat.

sfxmum · 16/09/2008 17:05

but have to say my objection to meat was not on ethical grounds as such so less problems with eating it again but I found I liked it less after the pregnancy

titmouse · 16/09/2008 17:06

I'm craving KFC. The Colonel has his wee beady eye on me. It's such a shame I am not craving healthy outdoor-reared organic meat as I could accept that more.

Get the new quorn southern style not chicken bites or the not chicken poppers. Get cheap ketchup from lidl and buy skinny chips, perfect

sfxmum · 16/09/2008 17:08

oh no not chicken not at the best of times maybe it is just grease you crave
nice juice steak is what you need

alienbump · 16/09/2008 17:08

I had this with all three of mine - DS1 we were on holidays in Cornwall and I finally had to give in and have a pasty, DD1 I developed a weakness for steak and by DD2 I'd graduated to offal! Well, steak and kidney. Have visions of a 4th pregnancy being like a scene from Rosemarys Baby...

On the positive, any desire to eat meat disappears after the birth.

broodymom · 16/09/2008 17:08

Titmouse this happend to me when i was pg (also to another vegie i know!!)with dd1!! i was vegie and always had been,dp is not vegie either i craved burger and steak it was crazy but i spoke to some people about it and gave into my cravings and i still eat meat now dd1 is 8.

I did feel guilty at first but i believe that your body craves what vitamin etc that it needs so when my body craved the meat it must have needed whatever goodness was in it!
Try not to feel bad and go with whatever feels right for you.

wotulookinat · 16/09/2008 17:13

I was veggie for nearly 10 years when I got pregnant and craved McD and BK burgers - the greasier the better! I controlled myself all the way through my pregnancy, but now I have given up on vegetarianism, I'm ashamed to say

titmouse · 16/09/2008 17:29

lol @ sfxmum yeah you could be right!

I'm nowhere near a fast food place so I have compromised and put some fish in the oven. Still not sure if I'll go through with it but if it makes me feel better I have to try!!
My husband is in Germany and finding it all quite amusing, he won't when he gets home and I've eaten all his food!

And some women go the other way - I had a friend who LOVED meat. got pregnant, and couldn't even stand the smell. Her husband was banned from eating the stuff in the house. It was hilarious.

juls2 · 16/09/2008 17:44

If your looking for something to get your teeth into could try paneer (indian cheese can get in tesco's), fry until golden and crispy then use it in a veggie curry. Am also veggie and find sometimes I really crave something to chew!

mazzystar · 16/09/2008 17:46

was veggie for more than 25 years
with vegan interludes
1 week before dd due had massive craving fvr meat
ate nearly raw steak. it was divine
am now meat-eater

pipsy76 · 16/09/2008 18:09

Me to I'm afraid. 17 yrs veggie now pregnant with dc2 and eat chicken and bacon!Yes roast chicken really tastes as good as it smells!

Chaotica · 16/09/2008 18:15

Never craved it through two pregnancies. Always thought I'd give in if I did. Ate a lot of greasy fry ups and cheese though.

PeppermintPatty · 16/09/2008 18:17

Me too. I caved in and started eating meat. I felt bad about it though, so only bought free-range meat.

I was anaemic when pregnant too.

It reminds me of Friends when Phoebe was craving meat when pregnant and Joey said she could eat his share of meat and he would become veggie to balance it out

angrypixie · 16/09/2008 18:18

Only when carrying boys!

I was veggie for 20 years but now very much omnivorous after dc3

xJulesx · 16/09/2008 18:20

I never thought i would be tempted by meat, have been veggie for 16 years

but strangely the smell of lamb roasting in the oven smells so good

(lamb has always been the meat i would never eat in a million years)

Come to think of it, i am drooling at the thought of most meats.

My DP would be over the moon if i started eating meat, but hopefully i will not succumb

piratecat · 16/09/2008 18:21

so is it the meat, or the iron you need?
I am a veggie, and didn't crave any meat in my pg. In fact i went off nearly everything, and only wanted orange juice!!

I was anaemic (sp) and also had the spa tone water to help.

Veggies that had meat after so many yrs how did that feel??

really wondering, becuase I have been known to enjoy the waft of a bacon sandwich!!

becklespeckle · 16/09/2008 18:24

Was brought up veggie, never eaten meat but I craved fried chicken when pg with DS1 (never gave in to it though)

pipsy76 · 16/09/2008 18:43

TBH eating chicken was a lot easier than I thought it would be! Handle meat anyway to make dinner for DH and DS, only buy free range to try to slightly reduce my guilt. Have now tried bacon 3 times, find texture and having to chew slightly hard to get used to, however I do now feel that some of the bacon veggie substitutes are indistinguishable in flavor. NB. quorn tastes nothing like chicken, can you tell I'm enjoying chicken!

ajm200 · 16/09/2008 18:47

My friend was a veggie for nearly 20 years before getting pregnant. We went out to dinner and she spent ages craving a rack of ribs that someone at the next table had.
Also caught her eating a bacon buttie in the staff restaurant. She said it was a smell that she'd always loved but had never given in before. She ate it fine, wasn't sick but didn't get the craving again.

Lived on cheese and onion crisp sandwiches as her craving mainstay for the rest of the first trimester then found out that they weren't suitable for veggies either as they contained rennet.

ajm200 · 16/09/2008 18:49

I'm a meat eater who has hardly been able to touch meat thoughout this pregnancy, can't stand the smell or taste and anything fried makes me think of the smell of old engine oil

Have a real iron deficiency as a result as I'm not too hot on cooking nutrious veggie food but have eaten lots of kidney beans - my current favourite food.

titmouse · 16/09/2008 19:13

well I ate the fish and it's the first thing I've eaten in days that didn't come straight back up. In fact I don't feel sick for once.

I had no idea that so many ladies crave meat!!

Peppermintpatty - my friend offered earlier to do a Joey and go vege for the next few months :-)
