jw *whispers quietly....we did vertical rhumba today.................giggles and runs off

Well, horizontal is no good....it'll wake Verity and the way I see it is you've gotta grabs yer kicks while you can - and while you can be arsed

welcome tee2072 well, if you are insane you in good company here (and you have come to the right place stick around and have some cake (we have a bit of a communal cake problem).

jj there is too summat on telly - a lovely bit of whimsical Stephen Fry in America silliness

You are of course correct about Ms Berry jw she only looks so good on account of the money, personal trainers, nannies etc. Which makes us just as good as her!!

jeanjeannie · 19/10/2008 21:30

HELLO Tee2072 CONGRATULATIONS!!! you are NOT insane....well, not on this thread anyway. A forty first timer makes you almost a spring chicken round these parts

I had first DD1 at 41 and DD2 at 42. I'm now 43 and got 2 under 2...knackered and happy!

Some of us here have popped already - but can't be bothered to leave the thread and others are still blooming!

Glad you've come to say Hi. Word of warning - we like CAKE on this thread - so be prepared for a huge cyber-calorie intake

Morning all.

Had early night last night and K slept through again! What a girl. And mummy is feeling suddenly rejuvinated ('mummy got her groove back'?)

OOOh JJ I take my hat off to you for being a rum bugger and having the co-ordination to do it without use of props. Our bed has suddenly developed a squeak so naturally enough it's a good excuse with K in the room to gently decline DH's kind offers

Still had no cake and would like to weigh myself but shouldn't do it too often so I'm looking for clues in the clothes to see if they fit the same

Gosh, the weather is dire here today and blowing an almightly gale - although rain has relented for time being. Don't fancy my chances down sarf as you have rain all day (according to BBC weatherman). Good luck!

Glad that meal was a great success and love the dog n bob scene

Welcome Tee0272. You don't have to be mad to be on this thread but it certainly helps You need to be old - as defined by the medical profession - tick. Like cake - tick. Willing to throw in a quip - tick. Have momumental worries about being a mummy - tick. Well, you'll fit in nicely then! Welcome.

DH came back like the bisto kid when dinner was served. There's no show without Punch......

johnworf · 20/10/2008 07:37

Tee0272 had a feeling you had some 'merican in you with the mom word Just read your profile and see you're a PA. That was my role in my former life before marriage....oooh

List-mania!

Tee2072 · 20/10/2008 10:12

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

Oooh, CAKE!

jeanjeannie · 20/10/2008 12:32

Guess what..? Verity had a couple of teaspoons of baby rice yesterday and only woke once all night Refreshed mummy is a happy mummy!!

Glad you like CAKE tee2072 it certainly brightens life up. How are you feeling? Has sickness kicked in?

Eeeee, it's a dark, windy day....no park for us this afternnon

hedgepig I hope all is going ok with your feeding regime.

mrsboogie · 20/10/2008 12:36

baby rice eh?

/counts the days...

jeanjeannie · 20/10/2008 13:23

Yeah mrsb - but I'm feeling a bit guilty. I know the guidelines are 6 months and I left DD1 till then - but she was weeny!

I'm not doing it today as I'm going to see how she sleeps. It may have been the world's longest growth spurt and the sleep part may have kicked in. I say this....cos, surprise, surprise...she's in bed

OP posts:
johnworf · 20/10/2008 14:01

JJ sleeping baby by day, means up and about baby by night

Glad the baby rice did the trick. Don't feel too guilty about it. Give the girl what she wants! (afterall, you'll be giving in from now on until you die - cheery thought there )

I'm drowning in work today Can't complain as lots of orders = money. At least like JJ I had a decent sleep. Only have to have a quiet word with Darragh now and it's a hat trick

hedgepig · 20/10/2008 14:01

afternoon everyone. I am a bit stir crazy today as waiting for health visitor but they have not called with a time (as promised on Friday) so I'm not sure if they are really coming or not(obviously they haven't responded o the message I left at 11am)
hi Tee2072 you are not mad there is a lot to be said for being an older Mom we may not have the stamina of a 20 year old but we are much more experienced in life and cunning to outsmart our LOs . I'm 42 and just had mty 2nd child 2 weeks ago, my oldest son is 5.
JJ I am impressed baby rice actually did something, I remember setting all my sleep hopes on it with Ben and it didn't make the slightest bit of difference. Feeding going well Oliver has got the idea that every 2hrs is the way to go, my poor boobs but he is a splendid color and seems to be filling out a bit.

mrsboogie · 20/10/2008 14:19

Oh I hate waiting for the hv and not knowing when they are coming...

I'm afraid that Darragh is going to be a tough nut to crack in terms of sleeping overnight - We were up late last night and I fed him at 1.30 hoping he might see his way clear to sleeping 'til 6am. Not a chance! instead of waking at 4am he only managed to stay asleep until 4.45am. So, whether he has his last feed at 10pm or 2am he will still wake up at roughly the same time for a feed.) Makes no sense to me but it obviously does to him (or at least his tummy)

I second hedgepig's view that we oldies are better mums - I have way more patience now than I would have had when younger and when Darragh cries "for no reason" I don't think he is doing it just to annoy me as I would probably have thought 20yrs ago!.

hedgepig · 20/10/2008 14:25

MrsB* Ben did a very similar thing regardless of what you did with feeds, he would always wake at 1 & 4 (until 7 - 8 months uggg) I kept reading all this stuff of how to try and manipulate his sleeping but none of it made any difference, this time I have locked all books in the cupboard and I just snuggle Oliver in bed with us instead which seems to settle him more.

jeanjeannie · 20/10/2008 14:44

hedgepig glad to see your boobs are getting a 2 hourly workout! Think mine started to go numb at around the 2 week mark! Hope the HV has turned up - hanging around is really annoying. Hope you've not baked cake or got biccies in! How is Ben enjoying being the older brother?

Well, Verity is awake again - no nap today. So me thinks that the rice isn't going to make any difference. Mind you I 've noticed her gums look odd....could be that all the dribble and hand-gnawing means teeth are on their way.

LOL @ hedgepig locking away all childrearing books Yep, I know the feeling. Couldn't tell you where all mine are - mind you perhaps I could do with one about unruly toddlers!

OP posts:
johnworf · 20/10/2008 15:40

Never bought a baby book in my life. What's the point? They're all so blooming varied it'd be more volumes than Encyclopaedia Brittanica.

All the signs are there JJ for teething. Well she'd be about right in terms of age wouldn't she?

I'm with mrsb on the patience front. 20 or so years ago I could go on 3 hours sleep a night and not bother but was climbing the ceiling with the behaviour...now I'm not arsed. Mebbe cos I'm knackered No idea but I'm much more laid back this time around.

Oh hedgepig all HV's are the same I'm afraid. Mine said she'd call a week last Friday and I've still not seen or heard from her. Hopefully you won't have to wait that long Glad that little Oliver is towing the line and drinking up like a good boy. I remember when I was expressing and my nipples were so desensitised from the machine I could pinch them and not feel them at all. Are yours there yet? If not, something to look forward to

johnworf · 20/10/2008 15:56

totsbots are on offer on amazon uk if anyone is interested

jeanjeannie · 20/10/2008 16:08

I see the emoticons have sprouted halloween hats........sweet. I may spook-up my name!

JW I didn't get on with totsbots - they were HUGE and I met with a woman from there at the Babyshow stand when I was preggie with Iris. She was such a COW - that it kind of put me off them ....moi, hold a grundge while hormonal?!

Yes, expressing turns your nips into little numb rubber bullets....just like DPs earplugs he uses for work.

Off to think of a good Halloween name!

OP posts:
jeanjeanniePumpkinQueenie · 20/10/2008 16:13

Pssssssssst, it's me! Did you recognise me with my Halloween hat on?!

hedgepig · 20/10/2008 16:35

very good JJ or I suppose it is JJPQ JW I'm a sucker for books on any subject I'm afraid. When ever I do something new I have to get a book. I sure my baby book obsession really fueled the PND last time because I couldn't find the answer, so no book reading this time and if you catch me reading baby books give me a slap {grin}.

Still no sign of the HV so I have no red book, so I can't go to baby clinic cos they have nothing to right the weights in hurrahhh

ladymac · 20/10/2008 16:35

Hi y'all. Tried to post yesterday but we had the world's longest power cut. Was really looking forward to my Strictly Come Dancing fix too. We had to talk to each other and everything. Couldn't even have an early night and make a baby as we've already done that! Grace was thrilled as we sat and played cards by candlelight then we all got in to bed together. That includes Betsy too, who decided she couldn't sleep with all the excitement and had great fun playing with a torch for the first time.

Power conveniently came back on at 1.10am, waking us up in a state of panic as all the lights came on in the bedroom. And that was it for me till 4am. Made myself a Green and Blacks hot choc and watched 60 Minute Makeover (with subtitles so as not to wake DH) to pass the time. This waking up in the night lark is getting me down. Anyone got any tips? It happened to me during my last pregnancy but at least I could catnap during the day as had no toddler to chase after.

johnworf thanks for the tip re Disability Living Allowance. Would never have known about it otherwise. It turns out we are entitled to it (at the lower rate I think) but it looks like we can't apply till 3 months after diagnosis for some strange reason. Got lots of info from the National Deaf Children's Society which we joined on the weekend. Spent most of saturday on the internet trying to find out more. It turns out that although Betsy's hearing loss is classed as moderate, according to the charts she's only a little way off being classed as 'severe', which was a bit of a shock as 'moderate' makes it sound not too bad. Even with hearing aids she will still struggle to differentiate between similar sounding words and also with plurals and will probably need some support at school for at least the first few years.

We went out on sat and bought her some new toys and books as we felt the need to spoil her a bit. We are all trying to come to terms with the fact that she has a disability that will affect her throughout her life. Not an awful one I know but I still just want to cuddle her up close to me at the moment.

ladymac · 20/10/2008 16:48

Sorry, in all that wallowing I clean forgot my manners.

Welcome tee. Hope your pregnancy is going ok. I am due in April so a bit ahead of you.

And hedgepig Oliver is gorgeous. I love the pics of the 2 boys together.

Mrsb I am truly impressed that you felt able to sacrifice any amount of sleep for a bit of rumpy pumpy I'm glad that the rest of us seem to be in agreement that there is no contest when it comes to sleep vs sex. DH knows that the best time to catch me is in the mornings and in lieu of a post-coital cigarette I require a cup of tea and biscuits be served to me in bed.

ladymac · 20/10/2008 16:51

Am also wondering whether it will be easier for the little ginge to hear us if we call her Betsy rather than Elizabeth. Seems easier to say Betsy louder. Try it out for yourselves! I do love the name Elizabeth though and would hate to never use it.

Tee2072 · 20/10/2008 17:45

jeanjeannie not too sick yet, but sure am burping a lot! And I never burp, so its weird! Having some bits of nausea, especially if I lean over to pick something up! I'm trying to remember to bend my knees!!

johnworf Yup, that's me! 'Merican! But I've been in Belfast for 5 years!

johnworf · 20/10/2008 18:23

ladymac I'm glad that you got in touch with Deaf Society as I was going to suggest that but then decided not to as it might have all been a bit much at once. But good on you for seeking it out. Knowledge is power so find out as much as poss then you can decide how it won't rule your life

Re Totsbots I've got the white, unbleached and the organic - all in aplix as I can't be doing with nippas. Theyre' ok in first size and just like a disposable but obviously you wash them. Are good enough for a night time as they have the booster alredy attached. However, they go a bit hard (even in my soft water area) after tumble drying and I find them on the smallish size. I've gone over to Motherease now so all my Totbots, Little Lambs and Fluffles (avoid the latter) will be sold off as soon as she's out of them which won't be long the way she's growing.

Mental note to self; don't pss JJ aka jjpq* off as she remembers for a lifetime

Tee glad you're not barfing up yet. Maybe you'll escape it. Lucky you if you do. The early days seem a very dim and distant memory now but when I think about it, I wasn't even pregnant this time last year

ladymac I must say you're doing remarkably well for a hormonal ticking time bomb (I mean that in the best possible way of course ). I'd be on the floor, sobbing into a pillow whilst Betsy looked on wondering what the hell was wrong with her mother....I was a woman on the edge with hormones when I was up the duff. Still am at times

Quote of the day from Guy Ritchie: Making love to Madonna was like cuddling gristle. Fabulous. Bet Guy is at home now with a pint of guinness, feet on the coffee table, eating fish and chips in his boxers. Scratching his balls. All the things he's not been able to do for 7 years

Yee haw!
