I just had a nuchal scan at 12 weeks and was sure I saw a penis, the sonographer just grinned!! Has anyone had any experience of seeing what they thought was a penis but turning out to be a girl????

I am no expert but I think they say that what looks like a penis on a scan to the untrained eye is actually not a penis....

Thanks Natalie, I've got two boys at the moment and really wanted a girl this time, but as long as its healthy ..............

At 12 weeks the genitals of both sexes look like a penis. You can guess a baby;s sex at 12 w by " the angle of the dangle" as a boy's bits point north and a girl's to the side, but it's only about 70% so best wait for the blue shop until 17w (sexing scan) or the good old anomaly scan at 20w.

PoppyMorgan · 07/07/2008 15:31

Hmmmmmmm not sure which way it was pointing to be honest............

How accurate can a sonographer be at sexing a baby at a 12 week scan?

OP posts:
lulumama · 07/07/2008 15:43

depends on the experience of the sonographer and the equipment they are using. they don;t tend to sex the baby at this early stage though.

PoppyMorgan · 07/07/2008 15:47

The sonographer didn't say anything when I said it must be a boy I can see its penis, she just grinned!!!

At my 12 weeks scan with ds2 I told he was a girl due to the dangle. So IME not very accurate.

Litterbug · 07/07/2008 16:33

Can I ask how acurate it is at 17 weeks?

I am paying for a gender scan, so I am assuming they should be able to tell me 100%?!

Surely if they are offering it as a service they will make sure they are correct before saying?

greenlawn · 07/07/2008 16:42

Litterbug, ime they will still make you sign a disclaimer! My letter (this pregnancy) says "had the characteristics of a [ ] foetus" but that sex of the baby is not guaranteed. That was at 22 weeks. When you think about it they actually have no way of making sure they are correct, they can only do their best and use their professional judgment.

Litterbug · 07/07/2008 16:45

Well i will have my anomaly scan at 22 weeks so hopefully they will agree on the sex, lol.

greenlawn · 07/07/2008 18:22

If your health trust is prepared to tell you at the anomaly scan (mine isn't as a matter of policy, so its pay up or else) then I would wait till 22 weeks!

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 07/07/2008 19:04

I had my dating scan last week, turned out I was 13+4 on the day and she wouldn't even look, let alone let on to me either way!

I think the stats say that at 20 weeks they can be 95% correct, the % must be so much lower at 12 weeks, not worth risking setting your heart/nursery colour scheme(!!) on one or the other IMO.

PoppyMorgan · 08/07/2008 11:02

Better not start painting my nursery yet!!! lol

We were told at our nuchal scan (at 12&6) that our baby is 70% likely to be a girl from what she could see....

Am only 16 weeks so a while to go yet until we know whether she was right!

PoppyMorgan · 08/07/2008 11:19

When I had my nuchal scan the sonographer didn't tell me that it was a boy, I just saw the bits hanging down, she just grinned - so I'm convinced it was a boy!!!

When you had yours did you see the bits hanging down??

OP posts:
minster · 08/07/2008 11:24

It's between 70-80% accurate at 12-14 weeks - assuming that you've got a skilled sonographer & a decent machine.

slinkiemalinki · 08/07/2008 11:28

For a boy at 12 weeks the bits should be pointing up! And to the side if it's a girl. (That assumes the baby is laying horizontally across the screen.)

PoppyMorgan · 08/07/2008 11:30

Defo a boy then!!!

OP posts:
hattyyellow · 08/07/2008 11:51

Our sonographer said it was a girl because there were the signs of two lines between her legs and that boys only had one line at that stage..

PoppyMorgan · 08/07/2008 11:56

I didn't see any lines just what looked like a little willy!! lol
