Extreme hunger and feeling shaky at six weeks pregnant

HonestKoala · Today 17:53

Hi ladies, I’m 6 weeks pregnant with my second baby. I am so so so unbelievably hungry all the time, like I have a good breakfast, a fruit snack and then I’m absolutely starving. It comes on suddenly, I feel ok one minute and then I get a feeling of extreme hunger like I haven’t eaten for days, also feel a bit shakey. I didn’t have this extreme with my first, is this normal?

I don’t think it’s abnormal. It’s going to sound silly but have you tried eating more?!

audhdandme · Today 17:55

Yes completely normal

Theysignoffquick · Today 18:00

Fruit isn’t going to satiate

what’s a “good breakfast”

gets some nuts down you. Greek yoghurt. Peanut butter on toast. Etc

My first pg symptom was shaky hunger. I couldn’t eat that pasty quick enough, even though it was too hot.

go with it - eat!

It sounds like your blood glucose levels are spiking, try to eat slow release foods. If you're shaky hungry you probably need to listen to your body and eat more, or differently. What are you having for breakfast?

Congratulations on baby!

I have had extreme hunger in the first trimester of all my pregnancies. I could eat a whole dinner and feel and stuffed, then 10 minutes later my stomach would be audibly growling and demanding more!

I just rolled with it, ate when it demanded food, but tried to make it as varied and nutritious as I could (within the bounds of morning sickness fussiness). I put on about 10 pounds in six weeks each time, but only about 10 pounds more in the rest of the pregnancy, so it evened out.

In terms of the shakiness, if eating more doesn't resolve it, ask your GP or midwife (they might bring your booking appointment forward to do the bloods for anaemia etc).

I'm definitely not pregnant but I equally can't my pasty quickly enough 😀

Normal - if I got the slightest bit hungry in my first trimester I would feel sick! The weight gain has been fun at 34 weeks ha! It definitely stopped after 12 weeks or so

Thanks for all your comments, really good to know. I feel like the Tiger who came to tea or the hungry caterpillar atm.

I had a bowl of weetabix this morning and Greek yogurt, then half a pineapple. I was on a teams meeting at 11 and as I was drinking water my hand was shaking and I had to go off camera and eat 3 biscuits 😆. I’ve just eaten a big bowl of pasta with meatballs for my dinner and half way through eating I said to my husband I’m going to be starving after this and I feel I could easily have ate his.

My belly bloats up as soon as I eat breakfast and I have to sit at my desk with my trousers unbuttoned for most of the day 🤦🏻‍♀️

Do you have a history of an eating disorder?

Theysignoffquick · Today 18:37

What did you have for lunch?

Masalacha · Today 18:38

Completely normal.

HonestKoala · Today 18:54

No?

If it's a bowl , it can't be that big!

Do you have a history of an eating disorder?

No what makes you say that?

No what makes you say that?

Because you seem to think that eating three biscuits for lunch is a horror story!

Theysignoffquick · Today 18:59

How many weetabix?

No it was the shaking during a 30 min teams call and feeling so hungry I couldn’t wait till it finished

So what did you have for lunch?

LandSsmum · Today 19:03

I had this in my first pregnancy. Felt shaky and then very sick and I could only deal with it by eating something. 6 small meals a day suited me so much better than 3 bigger ones in the first trimester. Listen to your body. It knows what you need

TheyGrewUp · Today 19:05

My children are now 31 and 27. I'll nevwr forget the hunger of the first trimester. I've never known hunger like it. If it helps I was very slim both times I fell pregnant.

I never had any hint of morning sickness. I.assume my body was keeping up with a need for extra fuel. I gained a stone in the first three months each time and 2.5st each pg.

Just have some boiled sweets / dark choc to hand so you can get some sugar

I had this too. Lurked on a lot of threads full of other women too nauseous to even contemplate food and were losing weight while I was horsing away my packed lunch by 10.30 most days and packed on 10lb before my booking appointment. Learn from my mistakes, don't do that. Do eat a lot of food and pack snacks. I still have a big appetite now I'm in the final stretch but I think things did improved somewhat, or I might just have noticed it more at the start when it was such a change.

I was anxious about the amount I was gaining as well and have definitely exceeded the predicted curve but have also got great HBA1C results, low BP and the baby is bang on the 50th centile, so I have to assume this is just the right amount for me.

Fifthtimelucky · Today 19:26

Sounds normal to me too. I was never actually sick, but I felt nauseous unless I ate every hour or so.

I was working somewhere with a staff canteen at the time and I used to have a hot cooked lunch which I supplemented with frequent snacks of raw carrots and breadsticks throughout the day.
