18 months. I was 21. 36 now.

bluewhitebluewhite · 28/01/2026 18:04

Pregnant 6 months after we got together. I was quite old though so we just went for it. Still happily together 25 years later.

Fortheloveofpizza · 28/01/2026 18:18

One year before falling pregnant. Too soon but my eggs were shrivelling and I was desperate

SnowyVillage · 28/01/2026 18:19

6 years. We'd just got married and got pregnant on the first try so had DD 9 months after the wedding.

Cotswoldmama · 28/01/2026 19:30

Just over about 11 years but we got together when I was 17

NoYourNameChanged · 28/01/2026 21:22

Together 3 years, married 6 months. By the time DS actually came along we’d been together 5 years and married 2.5 years.
I’d feel the same as you op, still v much in the honeymoon/best behaviour phase at 1 year I feel, but to each their own. There are always lots of factors to consider.

6 years.

I think it is important that you are really certain of the person you are having a child with.

You need to have discussed all the tricky parts and have spent enough time together to be able to commit to something that you can never reverse and that lasts forever.

StarsShiningOnANighttimeSea · 29/01/2026 00:40

Just under 15 years (got together when we were 18) by the time we had the baby

Spent a good 3-4 years trying first.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 29/01/2026 08:08

Wide range of answers here.
It’s good to hear a lot of parents are still together, although statistically most children are from broken homes sadly. I don’t think that will change anytime soon either.

Pregnantwithbabe3 · 29/01/2026 08:12

9 years for first but we were only 19 when we met. Baby 3 is due any day! Been together 15 years now!

Howarewealldoing · 29/01/2026 08:27

I don't think this particular post or indeed forum is for you. The OP asked for experiences on when peolle have had their children, not advise on whether or not to have children. Please take your agenda elsewhere.

I think there are other factors to consider when deciding on the length of time. A woman in her mid 30s doesnt have the luxury of waiting 3 years and confidently being able to have 2 children for example, but likely has more career and financial stability, and more experience in relationships to spot concerning traits.

A woman in her early 20s may be more vulnerable financially, and doesnt have the life experience to necessarily notice warning signs of a controlling or abusive man, and waiting 3-4 years is likely more sensible and doesnt have the fertility aspect to weigh up.

This!

We'd been together two months shy of two years, it wasn't officially planned but we were very much fine with an accident happening. I was 38 and he was 41 so there's every chance we would have waited longer if we were younger.

About to try for number two, fingers crossed!

Archibald · 29/01/2026 16:54

We’d been going out for 4.5 years, married for 6 years when we had dd1. She’s now almost 26! Ds came along exactly (to within 3 days) 2 years later and dd2 22 months after that. It was one more than we bargained for (dd2 was a mirena failure baby!!) but we’d not be without them!

SingingSands · 29/01/2026 17:03

We were 7 years together before having our first. Had baby and then married when she was 5 months old.

aintnospringchicken · 29/01/2026 17:13

Together nearly 3 years and married for 363 days when I had DC 1

VanityUnit66 · 29/01/2026 21:10

13 years!

This is a great story! May I ask how old you were? I’m 36 and due to circumstances we have to wait a couple of years before we can start TTC. I’ll be almost 38 😬

familyissues12345 · 29/01/2026 23:26

First was an unplanned youngish pregnancy. We’d been together about 18 months.

Second born was with my now DH, together 2 years, month off getting married when concieved . Was a bit quick, but DS1 was 5 by this point and we didn’t want a huge gap and planned to have a third too (didn’t happen sadly 😟)

I had my babies at age 39 and 41. It really felt like a miracle to me as I had a disastrous relationship break up in my mid thirties and thought I’d blown my chances of happy family life. I still thank my lucky stars every day.

Wirelessbird · 30/01/2026 07:59

Less than a year here! Met in January, I moved in in October and pregnant by November. Quicker than we would have imagined but it was Covid so we had an accelerated dating experience. Plus met when I was 36 and he was 46 so not much time to hang around if we wanted kids. Then got pregnant on our first go.

Have since got engaged, baby number two due June next year and wedding planned for year after. It’s been quite a few years!

FrostyFlo · 30/01/2026 08:04

Oh god, so familiar! My last, and most serious, relationship ended when I was 34 and I thought it was game over 😢 then I met DP completely randomly at 35, just over a year ago! It’s still early days I suppose, and we don’t yet live together, but things feel good/different, so fingers crossed.
