How accruate are growth scans?

dd2 was 9lb and arrived at 39weeks. i am having growth scans with this baby as am borderline diabetic (gestinal) and atm is under control, but with dd2 i never measured big or anything, so she was a shock at 9lb, considering dd1 was 6lb 15oz at full term.

can i asked to be induced? would they let me be induced? am scared of big baby again.

Well they say growrg scans are right give or take 10% ... I ahve seen them over-estimate by 20% ! Baby was 20% lighter (so an actually 2 pounds lighter) than they had said it would be !

I can't answer your question about induction... only your hospital will say yes to this if they feel you have good grounds.
On a 3rd pregnancy you are BOUND to look big regardless of the real size of the baby.... unless you're an aerobic's teacher and went back to pre-pregnancy days' tummy

Did you have a vaginal birth with DD2?

i dont look big tho. i barely look 5months pregnant some days. but fundus height is normal, as it was with dd2. (i never look pregnant tho)

vaginal birth with dd2, quite quick, but i was shocked at how big she was.

So why on earth do you want an induction and risk problems? Need to understand what's really worrying you ?
If you can do 9lbs once you'll easily push it out again !

guess i'm worried this one will be even bigger. and what if i cant deliver naturally. ignorance was bliss 1st time round, but now i've read about shoulder probs (what is it called again?).

i guess i also have other reasons for induction (apart from the fact induction scares me!!!). dh being ill has put me all over the place, and i guess knowing when bubs will arrive will make things easier, as will be able to arrange childcare etc, and hoping dh wont be taken ill the night b4 (my biggest fear atm).

I was told that they are more accurate when they are smaller but not very good for bigger babies. I had gestational diabetes and they scanned me about 4 days before my son was delivered by c/s. They said about 9 and a half pounds, he was 10lbs 9oz!

As he was big all along they only gave me the choice of c/s or being induced and sort of recommended the former if he was over a cetain weight, about 9 and a quarter I think.

ouch janey, did u consider a vaginal birth at all or was it a no go?

i am just so confused about what to do.

I know you are worried but I know some 5' women who had 10lbs without difficulty!
I don't know what is wrong with your DH so I don't know what to say.... from direct doula experience.... inductions can take a LONG time (I was with a woman for 6 days!!!!)

they told me at 37 weeks (while trying to scare me into induction for cholestasis which I did not actually have bah long story I was RIGHT)
that dd was measuring at nearly 10lbs
I said oh ok then I'm sure I'll manage regardless
delivered spontaneoulsy + vaginally few days later
7lbs 8oz

dh is awaiting assessment for heart transplant, and recently spent most of december and 1st week in jan in hospital as he also had pneumonia.

yeah, as long as i am not stuck for babysitters. she is on call for both. as is other sister. my parents are out of the country around due date lol.

Misdee - under these circumstances I am sure they would look favourably on what is technically called a social induction. Just don't necessarily think baby will be born within hours... but the nagain he/she may well be !

do you really think so? i didnt think they do one just because i want one. will ask consultant NEXT week (its diabetes clinic this week, seems like i have weekly appointments atm)

misdee, how many weeks are you at the moment?
pupuce,I'm curious - when you say you were with a woman for 6 days during an induction, was that 6 days after just prostin gel or with a syntocin IVI?
