My dating scan is separate from this appointment.

I guess we'll all find out when we go! Grin

I also have an obstetrician consultant appt (on NYE) and am not sure why. I have just turned 36 so I assume is only down to it being an ivf pregnancy. I would also like to know what happens at this.

Ivf = consultant led

I think it's 40 is the magic number, lucky me. They know it's not donor eggs, but I guess sensible to go through it again.

If anyone has actually had one, I'd love to know what it's for, just so I can prepare a bit.

They dont get info from ivf clinic. So they like to go over everything

Yep
Your scans will be separate

Also if they put u in for growth scans - they'll be separate too

worldwidetravel2017 · 02/12/2025 10:48

Your midwife can liase with hosp - they can send questions and referrals on your behalf

So what sort of stuff do they go over, for two hours?! I genuinely do want to know. My midwife has already gone over it all for nearly two hours. Absolutely great service, but it's a lot, isn't it?

Part of the reason I am asking is that my friend who was over 40 had tons of questions about NIPT testing and other abnormality testing. The midwife said that, although I could test, give I did PGT-A the chances were quite low and it wasn't worth it. Now slightly second-guessing whether that was right! My friend had loads of tests for all sorts of things and it does make me nervous thinking about what I might not know to ask about.

Yeah
The stuff from midwife booking appt - is semi over looked by consultant
You do a lot again

We did pgta too

NHS only encourage nipt if NHS 12w bloods show something

Interesting to read lots of you have consultant appointments. I don't and it hasn't even been mentioned.

Is it automatic that an IVF pregnancy is consultant led? I was under the impression that once established, an IVF pregnancy is no different than a naturally conceived pregnancy.

Where i am - ivf = consultant led

'Assisted conception ' goes down as a,risk factor

My understanding from my midwife was that it was a combination of risk factors - she said that being over 40 and having an IVF pregnancy meant I qualified.

And no, IVF isn't the same as a naturally conceived pregnancy once established. It is a bit controversial. So, for example, IVF pregnancies are less likely to go to 40 weeks than the general population. But it's not clear whether that has to do with the fact you're looking at a group of women who are mostly older than the average - people try to play with the statistics, but my understanding is that it's genuinely difficult to separate out all the intersecting factors.

CloudyIvy55 · 02/12/2025 11:09

@SarahAndQuack that's really interesting! I'll ask the midwife at my appointment later - it's my 16 week check up. A little nervous as she said she would check for the heartbeat but I know it can be difficult to find at this stage.

Good luck! I didn't know it could be hard to find at 16 weeks - eek! My midwife suggested I bring DD for that appointment and she could help listen for it. I might not do that if there's a risk it might be a worrying one. I have done the whole 'we can't guarantee there will be a baby but we hope' lecture over and over ... it's just so hard to know how to explain it to a child.

Backtotheicsi · 02/12/2025 17:09

@pastelheart thwnk you will check these out!

I’ve had an awful couple of days had a couple of incidents of a bleed and then spotting on and off. They wouldn’t do anything yesterday apart from a speculum which was horrific. That gave me another massive bleed but think she was just so rough. Anyways had a scan today baby girl was perfect and the lovely lady checked everything she said she can’t find a reason for it and that’s a good sign so come straight back if I have anymore issues.

so tired after a night of worrying!

I’ve got a consultant appointment but not until 22 weeks which seems late compared to last time but I don’t mind I just like the extra scans lol

hope everyone’s doing ok. I am still nauseous all the time just to be a broken record 😂😂

pastelheart · 02/12/2025 17:50

@Backtotheicsi oh my god, that must of been worrying. Are you okay? I am so glad baby has been checked and everything is okay 🩷

I’m not consultancy led so I guess it depends where you live or if other factors come into play? Sorry late to the party on this convo!

Hope everyone is okay? Xx

@Backtotheicsi, that sounds awful! Not just the bleeding, which is obviously scary - I'm so cross for you that she was rough with the speculum! That's really poor. I'm so very glad you did end up getting the reassurance you needed.

MintOwl · 02/12/2025 22:43

nice catching up on everyone’s news and welcome to newer joiners.

@Backtotheicsiso sorry to hear about your experience but a relief that everything is looking good

@pastelheartexciting about the movement! I haven’t felt anything yet (16 wks plus 5)

really helpful to read people’s exp of round ligament pains a while back. I was just getting excited about the nausea disappearing a couple of weeks ago and then last week was hit by a lot of sharp side pains, bloating and cramps, and had never heard of that before someone mentioned it on here. Seems to have eased up for the moment.

@Sara237 @worldwidetravel2017I’m also on iron tablets and have found that taking them at night helps

@CloudyIvy55also have my next scan on afternoon of NYE! Hope your appt went well today. I had my equivalent on Sat and they didn’t listen for the heartbeat.

we haven’t had an NIPT scan but had extra scans through volunteering for some midwife training and were told they were 80% confident it’s a girl but not totally certain! I’m happy either way but trying not to get too invested in the idea given they may be wrong.

@SarahAndQuackintrigued by your 2 hour appt! I’m 43 and having a couple of additional appts to coordinate/manage pregnancy alongside other existing medical conditions and medications I have but don’t think mine is consultant led generally.

I was also asked about whether I want to elect for c section or induction at 40 weeks at my last midwife appt. Need to do a bit more research on what I want for the actual birth as I genuinely haven’t ever thought that far ahead.. thanks to those who shared their experiences

SarahAndQuack · 02/12/2025 23:05

Hello @MintOwl! I remember your name from earlier threads (I was more of a reader than a poster, though!).

It sounds as if, for the good of Mumsnet, I should ask the consultant to spill the beans on why we do or don't have these appointments! Grin Sure he'll be delighted with that.

Pryceosh1987 · 03/12/2025 02:05

Congratulations.

worldwidetravel2017 · 03/12/2025 07:57

Drs have now agreed to giving me b12 injections

Lots to navigate

Gestational diabetes test Monday too

Feeling a bit overwhelmed

MrsB2025 · 03/12/2025 08:04

Hi everyone 👋 Great idea for the thread. I’m due with my second. Frozen transfer due at the beginning of June. Just been told I have Low PAPP-A. Something to do with the placenta, and have prescribed aspirin. I was initially worried but after searching Mumsnet found it’s not a huge deal really and plenty of people experience it with perfect outcomes.

SarahAndQuack · 03/12/2025 08:22

Hi @MrsB2025! I'm on aspirin for the placenta too - just precautionary in my case because, as they keep reminding me, I am so very old old old. Hmm Grin

Nosejug · 03/12/2025 08:26

On the consultant-led question, I’m still (only a smidge) under 40, but do have other factors such as cervical lletz, previous haemorrhage.

can your 12 week scan be at 11+5? I’d like that to be the one where they scan nuchal fluid and do nipt bloods just so I can count myself officially on my way, but maybe it’s just an additional scan. I’ve also got a scan this Friday, just another EPAS reassurance one which is very generous of them! If things are going well it’ll be so cool to have this many stages imaged. I have a picture of the blastocyst too that the clinic kindly printed for me hah.

I’ve been on aspirin since my 12 week appointment (as a precaution for preeclampsia). I’m 34 weeks tomorrow and have had no issues with it. I will stop it at 36 weeks
