Anyone else been told they need a very late growth scan?

MW, very nice/sensible, measured me this morning and said fundal height is 35cm, same as 10 days ago. I'm 38wks. She said she was being overcautious but a growth scan might be a good idea, and of course when she rang up, dep was fully booked for the next week.
To reassure me, she said if she was really worried, she would have made sure I got seen today, and f/h could be due to baby's head engaging, but I'm still not sure what the point of all of this is. It's a-freakin' me out (of course). has anyone been here before?
(DD was on the small side, and i'm getting lots of movement)

I think my sister had quite a few, because both her babies were small - her second one was really quite small, I think, four something (mind you so was she). Oh, and another friend had lots of late ones too. They were both fine although my nephew did need a bit of tube feeding and was spookily little for a bit.

I reckon the point is just because they're not exactly sure what's going on, but nothing necessarily is. If you see what I mean.

I have to say reading this thread in conjunction with your other one makes for an uncomfortable juxtaposition.

bp my love, I'm sure everything is absolutely fine, but if you are worried (and you do sound like you are) then take her up on her offer, i'm sure Miss H could fit you onto the end of her list, she did that with me once, please don't fret, xxxx
(I did have one extra growth scan after my Edwards scare, and dd2 was considered "small"..and you may remember that she came out at 8lbs 9.5oz )

Blimey, bundle, that's bigger than DD2 whom everyone projected, in that tactful way, would be a 'whopper'.

I know motherinferior, dd1 was 8lb 4.5oz and I felt about the same but still a bit shocked. amazingly i thought she looked tiny when she came out..

I had one at 37 weeks to check DS2 wasn't too big. It was lovely and clear

I had loads of late scans because I/he was so small (including one the morning they wanted to induce me!) He was small (4 15) but nothing wrong with him....

they told me dd would be small 'cos i smoked (i really did cut down only stressful time)so i had extra scan - she was 9lb exactly - should have smoked more! Ds was also 9lb but didn't smoke at all with him. Sure everything will be fine

i had serial growth scans from about 24 weeks because i have diabetes. will no doubt have them this time as well. i had one where the growth appeared to have tailed off & they said i had to go to the fetal medicine unit to make sure but they couldn't fit me in for a week. like you, i was really freaking out about this, had an awful week, ended up taking my mum along for support. turned out the original scanner had measured wrong. ggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrr. so i know exactly how you're feeling. as it turned out, ds was 7lbs10, & the babies of diabetic women are meant to be big so it was the opposite situation to you. hope everything is ok.

BP I think they are just covering themselves. I was v. small all the way through my pg. As a result I ended up having to go for checkups every week towards the end (either with the Midwife, or at the hospital) and they told me it was standard practice that if you fell below the line on the chart, or measured the same, you would be referred for a growth scan, because if they didn't and anything WAS wrong, they'd get it in the neck.....As I said ds was small, but there was nothing wrong with him...

thanks for this. baby has measured right for fundal dates all the way through -- until the time the bump dropped and it started to engage. i'm sure it's just curled up or something.

could have done without this, really. i've had enough of antenatal scans with this pregnancy.

i'd meekly assented to the week-long wait. but after your comments i got fired up and called her. (my thinking is, either she was concerned, or she wasn't. if she wasn't, she shouldn't really have mentioned it to me. i didn't express myself quite like that, though...)

she said that if it would cause me less anxiety, we could always cancel the scan and forget about it . i said that wouldn't exactly do the trick.

Now she has got me an appt for monday. Much better than waiting a whole week (thanks for geeing me up). i think she's feeling rather awful for winding me up; i do get the impression she thought she was giving me reassurance by offering me a scan, rather than the opposite. oh well, it's not exactly rocket science, handling pregnant women, is it?

Wonder what the plural of 'fundus' is. And is it your fundus, or the baby's? Because if not, if you're having twins, do you have two?

Had a late scan with my first because he was measuring small like you. He was termed 'small for gestational age' when born (6lbs, 2oz at 8 days late) but was OK. He was engaged fairly early so I am sure that affects measurement. The scan did reassure me. Good luck with the birth
