anyone got any ideas of where to find other mums-to-be in south west london? I'm 25 and non of my friends are anywhere near having babies and I'm desperate to have a few friendly faces to turn to by the dc1 arrives in october...I'm based in Streatham but can't find any mums-2-be classes (NCT is way too expensive for us), I do pregnancy yoga but the women are all at least 10 years odler than me and we don't really talk before, during or after sessions....lonely!

in my NCT pack it states in very small print if you cannot meet the costs to contact them in confidence as they are a CHARITY who believe everyone should have access to their services. they also do reduced membership fees in certain circumstances. i would contact them and ask about bumps and babies near you? the memebership fee is 39.00 oer year but i dont think you need to be a member to attend classes.nct prenancy line -0870 444709

MrsBadger · 29/05/2008 10:00

have you asked your midwife if there are free NHS classes near you?

I'd recommend a Baby Cafe but the closest one is Eltham so hardly convenient.

ARe you on the Due in Oct thread?

NCT 'bumps and babes' coffee sessions are opne to non-members and are normally £1 donation towards biscuits, so much cheaper than the course - def worth looking into, esp as you meet mums with slightly older kids who can be a vlaubale source of hand-me-downs

elportodelgato · 29/05/2008 10:04

Hi there!

A few ideas for you:
NCT can be expensive but they do offer discounts for those who cannot afford it so perhaps you could ask about that? I have found my ante-natal classes a brilliant place to meet people in the same situation and of the same age.

If NCT is still not possible, see what ante-natal classes your local hospital or surgery might be running and go to those.

You can always just join the NCT anyway even if you don't do the classes - they run second hand sales and coffee mornings etc which can be a good place to meet people - look on their website for local things

It's great that you're already doing the yoga but I would say don't discount the other women there just because they are a bit older than you - you'll probably find you have more in common than you think if you get the courage to ask one of them to join you for coffee afterwards.

Good luck! x

I'm in Surrey... and know no other mums to be, either... I'm 29 and none of my friends are having babies, either. It's very difficult!! Send a message if you want to chat.

mum2b1 · 29/05/2008 10:40

I have the same problem.
Am due at the end of July and although we have recently started NCT classes we dont seem to be 'bonding' with any of the other couples.
All the women there say they want to make friends etc but none of them seem to be making much effort.
My hubby and I try to strike up conversations but it never leads to much expect the obvious replies.
I think we are also on the younger end of people having babies - we are 28.
At the pilates class I used to go to people wouldnt chat - just came, did the stuff and left.
Is is very hard.
I am in Surrey too - where are you star6?

star6 · 29/05/2008 10:44

Surbiton, you? I haven't started NCT classes but want to - they called about a month ago but I haven't received any information. I'm due in October so only 20 weeks (maybe it's a bit early for classes?)

mum2b1 · 29/05/2008 10:47

yeah bit early for classes.
I am now 31 weeks and we started about 2 weeks ago.

I live in Sunbury.

you do need to sign up for the courses and get them their cheque etc or else they will run out of places.
Maybe give them a call for the paperwork...

Daniya · 29/05/2008 10:48

Hi Girlwith..

I am in the same situation as you as I am 27 and the first of my friends to be pregnant so I don't know any other mums to be. I will be doing the NCT classes though to meet people but I know what you mean about the cost. Luckily we can afford them but as others have said they sy that if you can't afford it they will help out so you should definitely call them.

I am based in Epsom in Surrey so not too far away if you want to meet up for a coffee? I am due on 1st November so I am hoping for an October baby!!

star6 · 29/05/2008 10:51

mum2b1 - that's cool - my husband teaches in sunbury!! I'll call NCT now.

daniya - you're very near to where I live.

Daniya · 29/05/2008 10:56

Why don't we arrange a meet up somewhere convienient and all have a coffee and a bumpy chat?!?

fymandbean · 29/05/2008 10:58

Hi Mum2b1

I live in Sunbury too....small world huh!

I found there was no interaction in the NCT classes.... until I invited all the mums round for a coffee morning at my house whenn we were about 38 weeks and all on mat leave. No one went until about 5pm! Out of 6 ladies we still all meet up, in fact 3 of us went out last week! (our DC's are 2.5 now). We also did a lot of things together in the early days - swimming classes, baby massage etc... There is a lovely lady in Walton who did us a private baby massage class (6 people was enough to get this!) bumps and babes, etc.
It's great now BUT I did have to start it off with coffee mornings!

mum2b1 · 29/05/2008 11:02

Would be up for meeting with any of you ...

I work part time from home so am free pretty much all the time...

Yeah I think I will have to take the initiative and start the ball rolling with coffee - maybe at a starbucks or something though as I think so maybe people here all at once would freak my poor doggies out!

Would love the number of the massage lady in Walton though - want to learn baby massage.

Thanks

star6 · 29/05/2008 11:03

Sounds great! I'm still working, though - so has to be evening or school holiday or weekend.

Weekends for me too as I work in London and don't get home till late.

How about we meet somewhere like Kingston as thats pretty convienient to get to?

mum2b1 · 29/05/2008 11:07

sure Kinsgton is good for me

kookykid · 29/05/2008 11:08

I didn't do NCT classes, but still managed to hook up with one of the local groups in Dulwich. Actually it was through one of the women I did yoga with (also in Streatham it's not with Kathleen by any chance??). I just took the plunge and started chatting to people at the yoga class and had no shame in asking people for their numbers/to meet up for coffee etc. 14 months later and we're all still really good friends!

fymandbean · 29/05/2008 11:09

baby massage in Walton

ChocOrange05 · 29/05/2008 11:11

Cool - hopefully Girlwith.. would be up for that too as she started this thread!

mum2b1 · 29/05/2008 11:20

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 29/05/2008 11:28

hey ladies - wow that was quick response! meeting up would be really good, I can get to Kingston on a bus from Streatham so that would work. Next few weekends are a bit tough for me, any suggestions of when?

Thanks also for tips on NCT groups without having to do the classes (does seem a bit exhorbitant just to meet other people)...will do a bit mroe digging around on their website.
