1 in 2 risk of Down's Syndrome

Hi All, I am 39 and 13 weeks into my 3rd pregnancy. Following screening , I have been told our third baby has a 1 in 2 risk of having Down's Syndrome. My screening showed:

PAPP-A : 0.25 Mom
HCGb: 4.23 Mom
NT: 2.7

I am obviously worried sick and had a NPIT blood test today. Wanted to know if any one had similar stats to mine and what your experience was.

TIA

I didn’t have that high odds but it was high enough for them to offer the NPIT test. Had it, said no downs, went on to have a healthy baby.

Just wait for the NIPT result, it’s so hard but try your best to put it from your mind, I know it’s easier said than done. Good luck, I hope it’s good news.

BarkItOff · 24/07/2025 17:33

The NT measurement is normal but on the higher side of normal. The Papp A is low and likely contributing to the result. Have you been offered Aspirin?

Toothdoctor · 24/07/2025 17:39

Yes they have given me aspirin. I am going out of my mind. The odds just seem so high compared to other threads I have seen on here

I'm sorry you're going through this, I can only imagine how stressful this is. It's purely anecdotal but I've seen plenty of threads on here where people got unsettling odds like that but later tests showed the baby to be unaffected, so don't lose hope 💕

The Downs Syndrome Association have some amazing resources if some information might help? My family member with DS is truly one of the unexpectedly best things that has happened to all of us. Be kind you yourself as you go through this uncertainty, and hope whatever the results show and you decide that you have amazing support around you xx

DailyEnergyCrisis · 24/07/2025 18:36

The current screening is so imprecise it’s a struggle to rationalise why it’s still acceptable to use it. NIPT is more accurate- I hope it comes back quickly for you.

Pinkywoo · 24/07/2025 18:52

I had 1 in 4 with DS2 when I was 41. I ended up having an anmio and it came back negative, he's now a very healthy 3 year old. I agree with PP, the screening is so inaccurate it's ridiculous.

RT1620 · 24/07/2025 19:07

i been through this in may but we had a 6.6mm nt. also my third pregnancy and I’m 36. I read a lot of positive stories with lower nt like yours. Some even at 4mm and all was ok. Sadly it wasn’t positive news for us. The low papa could just be to do with your placenta and you may need to go onto aspirin. The nt play a big part and your number is very low. Fingers crossed for you x

I had this recently. A 1 in 74 chance and the nipt said low risk. really feel for you the wait is horrendous!

Toothdoctor · 24/07/2025 19:19

@RT1620 Thank you for letting me know and your well wishes. I am sorry it wasn't positive for you but wishing you all the very best. It's nice to know we are not alone on here

No new advice but the wait is so hard, be kind to yourself. X

Tiddlersfish · 24/07/2025 19:22

I had this last year, 1 in 3 chance of DS with an NT of 4.6mm, 1in4 chance of Edward’s or Pataus had a CVS done at 16 weeks which came back that there were no issues, but concerns were raised that there may be a heart defect so had to have multiple scans due to that. My son was born last July with no chromosomal abnormalities or heart defects at all.

Toothdoctor · 24/07/2025 19:23

@chachahide Thank you

@Toothdoctor wishing you the very best outcome. It’s an awful time waiting so please do look after yourself

Obviously it’s impossible to predict the outcome but remember 1:2 means 50/50 so theirs is just as much chance that baby is not affected as is affected. I hope you get the NIPG results quickly.

lostinchaos · 24/07/2025 20:42

I had a 1 in 2 risk when I had the amino. In my situation the baby did have ds, but remember you have a 50% chance of your results being negative. You are welcome to IM me if you have any questions. Also I thoroughly recommend calling ARC for support. They listened while I sobbed on the phone and gave me far more support than any of my friends or family were able to.

Laiste · 24/07/2025 20:44

Have they said how long till results OP?

💐
So hard but try to stay relaxed and eat and sleep x

Or the baby did have Downs syndrome and was still fucking brilliant.
