Scan showing empty sac - thought I was 8 weeks

Hi all,

I thought I was 8 weeks going by date of my last period, but went for an early scan as I have been spotting brownish red the past couple of days, I also have a history of miscarriage, they scanned me, said I’m showing more like 5 -6 weeks and no baby seen, just the sac. No yolk sac either.
It was transvaginal on ths NHS.

I got my first positive test the week of the 26th May, on 5th June I took a clear blue that said I was 2-3 weeks. So I thought I would have seen something by now surely?

I’m 44 so I knew there was a higher chance of miscarriage or non viable pregnancy.
I am to go back in two weeks time for another scan to see if a baby has developed.

Has anyone had similar and its worked out positively? Really anxious right now.

Pic that I took with my phone of the screen attached.

My last period was April - could I have got my dates wrong? Or is it unlikely when I got a positive test end of May?

Hi
I’m so sorry- going by the CB test u we’re about 5 weeks at that time

I lost babies in my 40’s, then a successful pregnancy at 44, he’s 4 months.
Don’t lose hope x

Greenpolkadots · 26/06/2025 07:47

@silentlyleavetheirlife

I’m still bleeding brown, mixed with some red. But no cramping. So I don’t understand if I’m losing the pregnancy or not?
I’m not holding out much hope but they did say I might have got my dates wrong and in two weeks time there may be a baby in there. This wait is torture 😔

@silentlyleavetheirlife
If I was 5 weeks on 5th June then I should be 8 weeks now? So that would definitely mean I should have seen a baby at the scan right?

Sorry but you’d be around 8 weeks now with those positive test dates. You would expect to see a baby with heartbeat from around 6 weeks.

Birdsongsinging · 26/06/2025 08:17

I am sorry but it seems really unlikely that your dates are so wrong that they are seeing no yolk sac. I have had this and it ended with me having a d&c. Sorry 😔

Greenpolkadots · 26/06/2025 12:51

They didn’t definitely say there was no yolk sac, but by looking at that photo, does there look like one?

OP posts:

So I’ve just got to wait for two weeks time. I know there’s very little hope. But I feel like they wouldn’t have organised another scan if they thought there was zero hope.

Some places do always organise a second scan. Just to definitely be sure. I had IVF so was 100% sure of dates. My clinic scanned me at 7.4 weeks and there was only a sac. Clinic referred me to EPU as they knew it wasn’t viable. EPU agreed not viable, but said I had to come back in 10 days to double check and only then would they organise either medical or surgical management.

MauraLabingi · 26/06/2025 12:56

I am sorry, but if you got a positive pregnancy test on 26th May (and you haven't had a period since so that positive was definitely the current pregnancy), then there is no chance at all that this pregnancy is viable. They are rescanning you because they never take your word for it that you know when you tested or ovulated etc. But you know, so you can be sure that this will not work out.

I'm really sorry to be blunt. But it is a terrible false kindness when people post 'oh there's a tiny possibility it might turn out well' when there really isn't. I'm very sorry OP.

No I can’t see a yolk sac in that scan picture.

MummyV2021 · 26/06/2025 13:29

Really sorry you’re going through this lovely. Unfortunately they have to arrange another scan so they can be sure - sometimes because people can be wrong on their dates. Although I’m surprised they disregarded the positive test result as there’s no way you could be that out on dates with a positive test more than 4 weeks ago. You’d have to be at least 7/8 weeks by now and should really see a heartbeat. I had similar in March when I went for a scan at what should have been almost 9 weeks and they saw a sac and embryo with fetal pole but measuring 6 weeks and no heartbeat. However, because I was able to talk through my dates on OV and my first positive tests they knew I wasn’t out on dates and agreed to do a scan a week later to confirm. And that scan did confirm it sadly - the embryo was still there, no growth or heartbeat and had flattened slightly and I hadn’t started to miscarry on my own so had a D&C to remove. Making you wait 2 weeks is just awful, but I think that’s standard practice when they think your dates are off. I wish I could give you some hope but based on your dates I’m not sure there is sorry 😞 sending hugs

Have you got pregnancy symptoms

Have you got pregnancy symptoms

This is not relevant. Women can sometimes continue having pregnancy symptoms and sometimes they cease. It means nothing. Please do not get OP's hopes up.

Mrs777 · 26/06/2025 14:44

Excuse me?! It was a question amongst a load of other questions. No need to be so rude.

MauraLabingi · 26/06/2025 14:50

@Mrs777 I'm not being rude. But OP is clutching at straws which don't exist. This is her second thread on this. If she is still having symptoms then your question will just make her think 'maybe there is a tiny chance after all' and that just prolongs the agony. I've been there.
It is physically impossible for this to be a viable pregnancy. OP is 7 weeks 3 days at absolute minimum, and an empty sac on an NHS transvaginal scan at this gestation never has a good ending. Inferring that if OP has symptoms she might be in with a chance is cruel.

MummyV2021 · 26/06/2025 15:01

Afraid I have to agree with @MauraLabingi - I had symptoms with my MMC even after I had my D&C to remove the pregnancy at 10.5 weeks, the pregnancy stopped developing at 6 weeks. Our bodies are very clever but can be cruel when they don’t realise there isn’t actually a baby developing yet. I was still testing positive for 4 weeks as the HCG took to long to drop down to zero. It’s the pregnancy hormones that cause symptoms, not the actual embryo/fetus, so they can be there even without a viable pregnancy unfortuntely. Very sad and cruel 😢

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 26/06/2025 15:20

As do I. Been there also.

Wednesdayonline · 26/06/2025 15:25

Im sorry, I had a scan on 5+6 which saw something including heartbeat at that date. By 8+6 there was a whole obvious foetus in there. I think they do the second scan just to be sure there's nothing developed, as they have to be sure. I'm sorry they are making you wait so long but as everyone said, I don't think it's going to be good news.

MedievalNun · 26/06/2025 15:35

Another one coming to say I’m really sorry but there’s no viable pregnancy, and if you are losing brown & blood stained you are losing. And I’m saying this from having gone through it 6 times.

Please make sure you do attend the next scan though as it’s essential to make sure everything has been lost, in case you need a d&c

So sorry not to be more positive. Hugs.

Greenpolkadots · 26/06/2025 17:03

Thanks everyone for your replies. I guess I am sadly clutching at straws but deep down know it’s probably unlikely to be anything positive.
I just wish they’d made that clearer at the scan yesterday or instead of almost giving me a false sense of hope.
I am bleeding red but no pain, but when I said to them about bleeding they said if there are no clots and you’re not filling a pad in an hour while being in pain then it’s nothing to be concerned about?

OP posts:
Greenpolkadots · 26/06/2025 17:04

When will clots and pain begin? I just want to be ready.

OP posts:
Mrs777 · 26/06/2025 17:24

Sorry this hasn’t worked out for you. I’ve had two losses one the cramps started then bleeding with clots and intense pain, the other was just some slight cramping and bleeding minimal pain. So both totally different.

Greenpolkadots · 26/06/2025 17:57

Is all hope totally lost do you think? I just can’t believe I’ve got to wait 2 more weeks for the final answer.

OP posts:
Mrs777 · 26/06/2025 18:37

Sadly no one here can answer that. Sorry
