Morning sickness - promethazine or xonvea?

Hi all,
I'm 9 weeks and struggling badly - I've taken promethazine since 5.5 weeks as I did with my DS. However the breakthrough nausea is stopping me from working now even though I'm not vomiting it's so debilitating. The GP suggested Xonvea - has anyone taken this as a second or first line compared to promethazine? I have been issued the prescription but haven't collected yet. At the moment I am taking 10mg promethazine first thing and also around 5pm.
Thanks so much

Xonvea was a game changer for me!

Xonvea saved my life during pregnancy!

Georgia324 · 10/02/2025 15:12

Had you both already tried promethazine or cyclizine?

I tried promethazine and cyclinze and neither helped me but Xonvea gave me my life back! Sickness 10 plus times a day. I'd definitely say go for it. Although it's newish here I think it's been used in Canada and US (the generic drug under a different brand name) since the 70s I believe.

Thank you so much. I'm going to pick up my prescription and take it from tonight x

I had xonvea for hyperemesis in my second pregnancy and it was amazing. I went from vomiting all day, with horrendous reflux symptoms constantly, to feeling fine.

Harriet1989 · 10/02/2025 19:14

Completely agree with everyone else. It's licensed for use in pregnancy, they just prefer not to prescribe it as it's very expensive (still under patent).

It was life changing for me. Only downside is needing to take it on an empty stomach.

Can I ask why you added ondansetron? I am 14 weeks and finding I'm now feeling more nauseous, still manageable with Xonvea but I'd expected it to drop off now, did you find it got worse?

I was fully expecting to hit the second trimester and feel amazing 😂

The xonvea is great, but I also needed something stronger to control the sickness!
I'm trying to wean off it now, but it's hard 😂🫣 as I'm still feeling rough when I miss a dose

Melusina123 · 10/02/2025 21:00

Cyclizine did very little for me except knock me out. Metoclopramide stopped vomiting but didn't touch nausea. Xonvea worked so well that I could almost forget I was pregnant.

Georgia324 · 10/02/2025 21:05

I'm probably going to worry I've miscarried - can't win!

Melusina123 · 10/02/2025 21:07

@Georgia324 my worry about that is/was always sky high anyway, there was no room for it to go higher when the Xonvea took away the nausea. 😂

We are in the same boat! Xx

Xonvea really helped me, but it wasn’t the miracle that some posters clearly experienced!

In my second pregnancy, I vomited a minimum of 8 times per day and was admitted to hospital three times. In my current pregnancy, Xonvea took the vomiting to about 4 times per day, which was a lot more manageable.

Foodylicious · 10/02/2025 21:28

I found promethazine really helped, but was on 25mg at night, told I could increase up to 75 or 100 if I needed to.
I managed mostly on 25mg, but did have to take it throughout both pregnancies. The nausea and vomiting returned within 24hrs when I tried to stop.

I hope the 2nd med you have works for you. If not, maybe try promethazine again but at a higher dose.

Georgia324 · 11/02/2025 09:07

Thanks @Foodylicious that's a good idea. Promethazine is an effective drug, I don't know how you managed not taking any in the morning though

I started on cyclizine as it helped me in my first pregnancy but did bugger all this time.

I’ve been on xonvea since about 7 week (23 weeks now) and it has helped so much. I still feel nauseous and exhausted a lot of the time (I have hyperemesis) but it’s stopped the vomiting so I’d definitely say give it a go!

As expected I feel better today and therefore am convinced I’ve miscarried 😫husband thinks I’m a mad woman. Wish I could be normal.

So Xonvea has been working well for me - last few days I've been throwing up in the evening so I am considering taking the "extra" morning pill. Has anyone else done this? I'm 10+3 so hoping it won't be for much longer

OP posts:
TheFamousMrEd · 21/02/2025 08:37

I still take the extra 3rd one a few times a week when I’m feeling really grim and it definitely helps!

Georgia324 · 21/02/2025 12:42

That's good to know. How far along are you?

When I had my dc only ondansetron worked I had to take it from 5 weeks.

I’m 24 weeks now. Was really hoping the nausea would have gone but think I’ve got it till the end now 🤦‍♀️

Georgia324 · 27/03/2025 20:09

My nausea has basically gone now so I'm thinking of reducing to one pill and then coming off (I'm 15.5 weeks). Has anyone weaned successfully? Thanks
