I think they are worth it but see my thread here about my bad experience at The Birth Company in Harley St, London this morning.... I would advise going somewhere else....

Thankyouandgoodnight · 02/05/2008 14:35

Sorry - I have just realised that you may not have been talking about the 4D scans.....

flowerybeanbag · 02/05/2008 14:40

We had one and thought it was worth every penny. It was a lovely experience, very friendly people, very personal, we could choose our own music, they 'explored' and showed us as much as possible, totally brilliant.

Sounds like thankyouandgoodnight had a totally opposite experience. I'm trying to remember the company we used. I'll have a think and come back if I can remember, it was really good anyway.

flowerybeanbag · 02/05/2008 14:42

This was them!

peanutbear · 02/05/2008 14:46

mumofdjandbabies · 02/05/2008 15:34

I had a fantastic experience at my scan. They were not rushed and talked to me about loads of things and let me ask lots of questions. The glossy photos I have are amazing as is is the DVD. I probably wouldn't do it again with any future babies but for a first time, I'd highly recommend it.

It is a shame that it is not more widely available to those may be on lower incomes.

finallypregnant · 02/05/2008 16:03

BTW, if you can wait go later rather than sooner. Wish I had waited just an extra 10-14 days.

2beautifulgirls · 02/05/2008 16:07

i had one in America at 20 weeks, due to hubbys family being there and wanting to involve him and them. It was a great experience and pictures are great but would definately wait until you are around 28 weeks plus. Just because they look more human and can see more feature wise where as at 20 weeks you can still see features but not fully formed.

Becky77 · 02/05/2008 18:23

We used www.babypremier.co.uk it cost £145 for the scan, some printouts, a DVD and gender identification... Worth every penny!!

geordieminx · 02/05/2008 18:39

Mumofdj - I think you are in scotland - if so I had mines done at Babybond over in Livingston - they were utterly fantastic - cant recommend them enough. Had 4d scan with dvd and pics - was amazing!!

misdee · 02/05/2008 18:42

how much!

[faints]

NotABanana · 02/05/2008 18:43

Not something I would have paid for but it is your baby and your money.

nooka · 02/05/2008 18:57

I'm not sure why you would want to do this really. You should have the 20 week scan to check for abnormalities anyway, so it's not a necessary thing to do. Although there are no known side effects (as yet) from ultrasound I'm not sure it is a good idea to put your baby through one just for curiosity. Still I guess if it's how you wish to spend your money?

geordieminx · 02/05/2008 19:02

You dont get a 20 week scan in Scotland. This is why most of us scottish mummies to be have had to pay £170+ for a basic abnomality scan that woman get as part of their basic maternity care across the rest of the country - it isnt just "curiosity"

misdee · 02/05/2008 19:03

i cant believe they dont do 20 week scans in scotland! thats terrible!

is there a petitiion to sign about this?

geordieminx · 02/05/2008 19:15

There have been petitions and protests and letters to the first minister and the health secretary - doesnt seem to make any difference. The official line is that there will be a routine 20 week scan for every woman in Scotland eventually but the date is unknown. There are a couple of health authorities up here that do offer them - but Glasgow, Edinburgh and Tayside dont. Its a very sort subject up here.

misdee · 02/05/2008 19:17

thats absolutly terrible!

mine you i am getting tonnes of scans (diabetes and dh/dd1 heart problems) so think i'll be fine with just normal scans.

i did see some pics of the new 4d(?) scans today and they did look amazing, if a little alien-like but local hospital doesnt do them there.

finallypregnant · 02/05/2008 20:42

Another thread where people have to be so judgemental on other people's decisions.

Nooka, several people need to be monitored and have to have more than one or two scans for various reasons. What silly comments to make.

mumofdjandbabies · 02/05/2008 20:52

Hi all just back
was having a kip!
yes I think we will go for it as would love the experience, will look up the livingstone babybond place and also www.babypremier.co.uk.........(off to search net)!

geordieminx · 02/05/2008 20:52

Well thats what I thought FP.

The OP didnt ask for opinions on scans, or ask to start a debate re the safety. My friend is expecting twins after IVF - she gets scanned every 2 weeks - not through choice but because the health proffesionals think it is the safest thing to do for both mother and babies.

finallypregnant · 02/05/2008 21:04

There is a place at St Andrew Square in Edinburgh where I went. They were lovely too if Livingston is too difficult to get to.

Thanks geordieminx, I came back with my tail between my legs thinking I'd get a bollocking for what I said.

mumofdjandbabies · 02/05/2008 21:07

ooh whats that place St Andrew Square in Edinburgh ?
do you have any info

I am geting excited now

So I take it youre mostly scottish lassies then

misdee · 02/05/2008 21:12

i didnt say they were a bad idea, i was shocked att he price. didnt know they were that much.

geordieminx · 02/05/2008 21:24

wasnt aimed at you misdee. You are right its an obscene amount of money to spend on something which should be free.
