I only had one scan at 13 weeks

I was due to have one at 16 weeks which is the standard here but since I was "lucky" enough to have a threatened mc at 13 weeks I got my one and only then.

We payed for a private one at babyscanning in Glasgow.

Our NHS trust has said they will eventually be having 20 week scans but they don't have enough trained sonographers to do it.

mumofdjandbabies · 02/05/2008 21:43

aw thats a shame honey you didnt then get your 16 week scan
thats terrible!

what were babyscanning in Glasgow like and do you have a link? can you remember the cost?
thanks x tryoing to find the cheapest/best

here you go

www.babyscanning.co.uk/contact-babyscanning.htm

Also if you google healthcare now, they have a clinic in Stafford Street but their times were a bit restricting for me. Seem to have a good reputation though

I'm sorry, I was going on the PR information from private scanning companies which are not diagnostic, but marketed as an experience, and I suppose to me just seem unecessary, and a bit intrusive . Of course if there is a health reason to have further scans that's a totally different ball game and Scotland not doing later scans at all is terrible.

popstar · 02/05/2008 22:35

Actually, Nooka raises an extremely valid point. The OP is asking about the pros and cons of having a scan and saftey has to come into it.
It's one thing having a 20 week scan looking for an abnormality (which is what those scans are all about) or being scanned frequently in a high risk pregnancy (like twins) where a problem might get picked up and acted upon sooner, quite another having a 'bonding' scan.
It's your pregnancy and your money and will almost certainly be a very enjoyable experience but you do have to accept there may be unknown risks and the potential to find out things you'd rather not have known.

milkgoddessmakesthefinestmilk · 02/05/2008 22:40

well worth the money imo. do it

CristinaTheAstonishing · 02/05/2008 22:46

Like Nooka, I too thought they weren't diagnostic. I also didn't know they weren't offerred to everyone in Scotland.

mumofdjandbabies · 02/05/2008 22:55

I am trying to find all the scottish centres offering scans hmm trying to work out if any are cheaper than others
as it is alot of money but for some reason I am desp to see the baby again!

babyscanning is bonding only but the sonographer did do a full body check for us as well.

The Nuffield in Glasgow does private scans for £200 as does Healthcare Now in Edinburgh (have a google of both)

guccimucci · 05/05/2008 00:45

I highly recommend this between 26-29 weeks
money is well worth it.
I lived in several different countires and having last scan at 20th week is so backwards here.
half of the time, you just wonder and get more anxious if your baby's development is ok. At least with this private scan you will have peace of mind.
the clinic that I went thehendonclinic.com/explain.html
and very happy with the whole experience and price conmpere to other ones in London.
only one thing that some people may not want is are you ready to see baby's face? after we saw ours as a very curious older couple, we cant help but talked hours to find out who she looks like!
Good Luck

I had one done @ 30 weeks, and was brilliant well worth the money! I went to one in Warrington, it was great, not rushed, spent a long time scanning me, and the dvd was brilliant.

I saw my ds smile, rub his eyes, and yawning, i got a CD rom with loads of piccies on, the DVD and photo keyrings.

Ther are a couple of piccies in my profile if you want to take a peek, i saw some pics from scans taken earlier on and they wasn't as good i don't think, i think the later you have the scan done the better really, i think the cut off point is 30 weeks though as after that they just get too big and squashed up to get decent pics.

pucca · 05/05/2008 00:56

Actually not sure if you are talking about this osrt of scan now, but i have to say they also checked everything was ok and actually picked up that i had excess fluid around the baby which i mentioned to my MW and they did a scan at 34 weeks for me to check it, i did have extra water.

AitchTwoCiao · 05/05/2008 00:56

if there is any reason to scan you (other than finding out gender) then they do in Glasgow, most definitely. age, afp, high bp etc etc, then they scan you no problem.

geordieminx · 05/05/2008 10:21

but you dont get a routine 20 week scan in glasgow. 12 weeks to confirm pregnancy is viable and thats it.

AitchTwoCiao · 05/05/2008 10:34

but why do you need a routine scan? the 12 week scan and tests combined with maternal age etc will throw up reasons to have a 20 week scan.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 05/05/2008 18:58

The 12 week scan plus age etc mainly give an indication of Down's syndrome, not other problems that could be picked up at 20 weeks (e.g. renal problems).

AitchTwoCiao · 05/05/2008 21:13

ah well, it was explained to me that with the equipment they have now they can see a great deal more than you would have done say ten years ago and that a sonographer is looking out for a great deal at that first scan and you'd be offered a further scan on that basis. for me, for example, i was offered one as a matter of course because of my high bp, no discussion necessary.
