Hello! :)
Just found out I am pregnant with my 2nd! - been feeling awful but thought the toddler had passes a bug on. Done 2 tests and both positive which is great and we are so happy. However I'm due to go on a work night out tonight lol classic timing! Reckon it'll be easy to pretend/have mocktails and get away with it? :)

Tell them you're on anti biotics for your tooth or something, then there's no drama.

They will 100% know you're pregnant

I promise no one will notice if you don't mention it

dementedpixie · 13/12/2024 14:02

Worst excuse ever!
Say you're hungover and cant face another drink
Or that you have an early start in the morning and want to be ok to drive

adulthoodisajoke · 13/12/2024 14:02

I think sobriety is well recognised that people probably won't/shouldnt question it

if anyone does just say:

you have a toddler and a hangover is not what you need

drive there and then you have to stay sober to drive home

on antibiotics so cant drink

The toddler idea is brilliant actually as we take her out early on Saturdays :) thank u!

The antibiotics excuse might as well be a pregnancy announcement! I wouldn’t say it to you face but if someone showed up an event saying they’re not drinking because of antibiotics I’d be expecting a pregnancy announcement. I think the best thing to do is not draw attention to the fact you’re not drinking, unless you drive to the venue which would be the only excuse which works I think. Order at the bar on your own and order non alcoholic drinks and don’t mention what you’re drinking and other people probably won’t notice.

Nothing screams "I'm pregnant" more than this excuse. There are vanishingly few types of antibiotics you can't drink on.

Just stick to mocktails or ask the bartender if he'll put lemonade in one of those big gin glasses. Nobody will know it's not a gin and tonic.

LogoOnTheFoam · 13/12/2024 14:07

Thanks agreed on antibiotics I was never going to say that as yes it screams pregnant. I'll order my own drinks and get mocktails etc :) they're a nice bunch so wouldn't pry unnecessarily I don't think either.

Stick a neon sign on your head saying PREGNANT.

Say you are driving, or driving the next morning or don't go.

Mals2022 · 13/12/2024 14:30

Just try to order your drink when no one else is at the bar and tell them its vodka coke/vodka lemonade. And if you have to order an alcoholic drink "nurse" it for a while then throw it down the sink😂

Poggishairtufts · 13/12/2024 14:37

Really looking forward to the day where no one questions someone not drinking alcohol.

CrushingOnRubies · 13/12/2024 14:39

You're designated driver. Have to be up early doing Christmas stuff with toddler

There are so many non alcoholic options now. I've managed to get away with it for 14 weeks and have had a lot of events. I've had non alcoholic Prosecco, gin and wine and mocktails. You can also have Diet Coke and say it's vodka/malibu/JD etc

DrCoconut · 13/12/2024 15:04

Just order non alcoholic drinks? It's not compulsory to drink alcohol. If anyone is silly enough to make comments about it then that is on them.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 13/12/2024 15:08

Lol at all of you immediately marking women down as pregnant, if they have the misfortune to have to actually take antibiotics 🤣🤣

Especially at this time of year when so many people have been ill!

It's very well known that there are only a couple of types of antibiotics you can't drink on. That's why it's far more likely if a woman who would usually drink isn't and says its antibiotics that's is actually a silly attempt at covering up.

I wouldn't bother trying to cover it up. Order whatever you want to drink whether it's a mocktail or just a lemonade. Some people will clock it and know, mostly they will keep it to themselves if they do notice.

If someone actually asks I always went with the truth. That yes, I'm pregnant but it's early days so anything could happen. The caveat shuts down any further conversation without any drama. Job done.

Do you know how expensive drinks are these days 😂

inthewest · 13/12/2024 16:21

I'm 14 weeks and I've managed to trick quite a few friends with non-alcoholic beer, mocktails and lemonade. We told a friend the other day and his immediate response was "but we were all drinking last weekend and all quite drunk!".

I've found that once people start drinking, they don't really realise if you're not actually drinking or completely sober. The only person who would have picked up on it was my best friend, but she knew and found it quite a fun game to try and hide from others.

you can drink on most antibiotics, so it doesn’t work.

to use this excuse, but you need to lay the ground work before hand. Tell everyone weeks in advance, you’ve had an infection that won’t go away, tell them you’re on your third round and you don’t want to tempt fate before Christmas.

its far easier to invent something that needs a super early start the next day involving driving, or playing bait and switch the non alcohol drinks.

user2848502016 · 13/12/2024 16:50

Tell them you're driving?

Harriet1989 · 13/12/2024 17:42

If you've got one person in on it with you it's a lot easier!

I definitely agree on all the antibiotics comments, I've had them for a tooth infection and I looked and felt awful. I think they're also prescribed for bacterial vaginosis?

Umbridge34 · 13/12/2024 19:03

I'm 6 weeks and have my works do tomorrow. Unfortunately for me I'd been thoroughly looking forward to have a drink or 2 and had already arranged a taxi, and who I was pairing up to share prosecco with. I've just decided to tell a few of my colleagues, I don't mind them knowing and they all know I miscarried my last pregnancy so haven't made a big deal.
Had I not been so vocal about drinking I know I'd have been able to get away with drinking mocktails or lemonade with no one realising, once other people start drinking they atop noticing what others are having.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 13/12/2024 19:13

How well do they know you, how often do you socialise with them?

I don't drink at all since having a child because my tolerance is pretty low now and also who wants to deal with a young child in the night/next day feeling rubbish. Just can't be bothered with it.

If they don't know you as a heavy drinker just drive there. Order whatever you want and if asked "oh not drinking" just say "nah can't tolerate it since having little johnny, plus he wakes at 6am so don't want a hangover and a 6am wake up". You also have the driving excuse too. I doubt anyone will even notice or question it.

As PP have said there are not many antibiotics you can't drink on and they're mainly for pretty specific things.

Winter bugs usually make you feel pretty rotten and if any did turn bacterial another antibiotic would probably be prescribed at first so the OP would need to play a longer game of pretending to be ill for some time!
