Baby weight - Was your second bigger or smaller than your first?

My first born (now 4) was born by ELCS at 38 weeks and was quite a bit smaller than predicted (no health issues). In fact, she was the smallest baby in the immediate family.

For those that have 2 or more children, was your second baby bigger or smaller than your first?

Does one small baby mean the rest are likely to be small as well?

Bigger, and the third was bigger than the second. All born around the same gestation.

GiraffeTree · 06/11/2024 06:49

My three DC were similar weights - all between 8lb10oz and 8lb13oz.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 06/11/2024 07:01

Smaller but I think that’s unusual. I was told they were going to be massive as well and then they ended up 7lb with very long legs. Dc1 was 8lb (& 2 weeks earlier than dc2).

Kneenightmare · 06/11/2024 07:04

My first was 7lb9 second was 9lb12. Went straight into age 3 months clothes as he was super long.

Nursemumma92 · 06/11/2024 07:05

My second was a pound smaller- DD1 8lb 12 at 40+5, DD2 7lb 10 at 41+2. Everyone was surprised as I was lot bigger second time round but I think I had a lot of fluid as I had polyhydramnios during pregnancy but levels had come down below the threshold at a scan at 36 weeks.

annlee3817 · 06/11/2024 07:06

Both were born pretty much around their due date, second was bigger than the first, but only by 4oz

Copperoliverbear · 06/11/2024 07:06

Slightly bigger 8lb 1st 8lb. 2oz 2nd.

Monstermashermashedthemonster · 06/11/2024 07:14

All mine have been roughly the same size up until my last he was the smallest born at 36 weeks.
Two of mine weighed 5lb4 one weighed 5lb3 and the last was 5lb so not much of a difference.

LyricalGangsta · 06/11/2024 07:15

9lb9.5 - 1 week early
10lb12.5 - 4 days late
8lb12 - 4 days late
8lb14 - on due date

Aozora13 · 06/11/2024 07:18

My first two weighed almost exactly the same but DC1 was on time and DC2 was a week early. DC3 was heavier and was a few days early.

Completelyjo · 06/11/2024 07:19

A bit bigger but I’ve heard it going the other way so I don’t think it’s a given.
DC 1 6”3
DC 2 7”5

Fireworknight · 06/11/2024 07:33

Second bigger.

7 lb 6
9lb

Both were late

Casmama · 06/11/2024 08:41

First 5 lb 9, induced 4 days before due date because of growth restriction. Second was 2 days early and 8 lb 6

modgepodge · 06/11/2024 08:42

My second was 1lb heavier. But he was a boy and my first was a girl and I think boys are usually slightly bigger on average?

Dyra · 06/11/2024 12:13

Bigger.

DC1 7lb5 (3315g)
DC2 8lb1 (3675g)

While DC2 was 5 days later than DC1 was, I think DC2 would have been bigger no matter what. DC1 dropped centiles after birth before settling around the 19th, while DC2 has stayed chunky on the 75th.

ETA: My sister on the other hand had DC2 be smaller. By about half a pound. Similar gestation.

teatoast8 · 06/11/2024 12:14

Smaller

Squeezetheday · 06/11/2024 14:24

Smaller, but was born at 39 weeks and my oldest at 41. There was only 200g difference between them so expect they could have been very similar weights had they been born at the same gestation!

CrystalTaliefero · 06/11/2024 14:27

Smaller. First was 7lb8, second 6lb exactly, third 6lb5. First was the day before his due date, the other two were a week or so before theirs.

sel2223 · 07/11/2024 08:00

Thanks for the responses, it seems to be a mixed bag!

8lb 6 - 5 days over due date
9lb 1 - born at 39 + 1

Third one due in just under 7 weeks, have been told to expect her to be bigger than her brothers.

Roseinbloom20 · 07/11/2024 08:58

Both exactly the same - 7lbs 9 and both born at 40+2 and both born on a Friday and both boys! Apparently I make little clones 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bluebella27 · 07/11/2024 09:04

First was 8lb 13oz then they kept telling me my second was going to be about 10lb (didn't have GD) but he was 8lb 6oz- both full term and both 3 days passed they're estimated due date x

elliejjtiny · 07/11/2024 09:05

GiraffeTree · 06/11/2024 06:49

My three DC were similar weights - all between 8lb10oz and 8lb13oz.

My older 3 were all that size too and all 53cm long. My younger 2 were early and smaller but I had them weighed and measured on their due dates just put of curiosity and sure enough they were the same weight and length as the others. I think I must just grow babies that size. They are all very different shapes and sizes now though.

VioletCrawleyForever · 07/11/2024 09:05

First 10lbs 8oz born at 41+5
Second 5lbs 50os born at 34+5

mintich · 07/11/2024 09:07

1st baby girl 8lb3oz
2nd baby boy 7lb15oz
3rd baby boy 9lb3oz
