IVF - 5 Weeks Pregnant & Spotting

Hi Everyone,

Very new here.

I am currently 5 weeks & 1 day pregnant and yesterday I had some bleeding. There was what looked like a clot in the toilet and it was red on wipe.

We managed to get booked in for a scan on the same day and it showed pregnancy sac and yolk in place which was very reassuring.

There was no blood overnight which I was relieved to see when I woke up.

The bleeding is still there today - I've got a liner on and changing it every time there is blood. There isn't blood on every wipe - but it's heartbreaking when there is.

Has anyone else had this? Any stories/ help welcome.

Sorry you’re going through this! I don’t have any advice but I’m in a similar position. 5 weeks pregnant today after a frozen ivf transfer. I’m having on and off spotting and even though I’ve read it can be normal I’m worrying my head off - have never had a positive test before now and I’m sort of waiting for it all to crash down.

It’s good your scan showed the right things in the right place, that’s all you can focus on for now. Did they make any suggestions as to what the bleeding might be?

Sending support and keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Oh Sierra26 - thank you for finding my post. Congratulations on your positive (if you're like me you'll be celebrating with your breath held..)

I'm also an FET and exactly the same as you - never had a positive test before and treading the line of being so grateful but also terrified something will take it away.

I'm googling so much (know I shouldn't) and I'm confused by the term 'spotting.' Mine isn't like a period but there's also like too much to disregard if you understand? Also concerned as it looks to be fresh blood and not darker brown?

I called my clinic because I didn't know whether to carry on with tablets /medication etc and they said it can be normal in an IVF pregnancy for spotting at implantation - perhaps I'm being silly but I thought implantation had passed.

The nurse at the scan yesterday said similar that it can be normal. It's so hard to find out what 'normal' looks like online mind you.

Sending you so much love and everything crossed for you too xo

I had spotting on and off for 2 weeks from week 6. I continued on progesterone as that was the only medication my clinic had me on following a FET.

It's difficult because spotting can be completely normal or a cause for concern. The only thing you can do is try to stay positive, which I know is super hard.

Do you have an early scan coming up with the clinic?

Thank you LuxeBiscuit. I'm on both oestrogen (6mg a day) and progesterone morning and evening (injection and pessary)

It feels so hard to be positive but I do know you are right.

My clinic won't see me until mid October due to that being 7 weeks - I think I might look for a private reassurance clinic who would do a scan to see everything is in place. I didn't know bleeding in IVF was a 'thing' until reading all the posts on Mumsnet...

Feel free to not respond if it's TMI - but can I ask with your spotting on and off for 2 weeks - was it 'fresh' blood? Mine looks to be as it's red..

Thank you xo

@Suntwinkle bleeding / spotting in early pregnancy is quite common. It's not just an IVF thing. I never found out the cause but I also had a cyst on the ovary that ovulated that month so that could have been the cause. Bleeding can also be caused by a Subchorionic haematoma.

I had fresh blood, not brown but also not bright red like a period. It was more like a bright pink.

CB2805 · 27/09/2024 02:40

I had bleeding since week6 with my FET that continued off and on till I gave birth to my twins. Had all sort of bleeds from spotting to heavy bleeds to clots everything - you name it I had it.
I was worrying my head off the entire pregnancy and had numerous private scans and visits to the triage but besides them coming early it did not affect them at all. At around 20w it turned out that the placenta of one of my twins was low laying and was causing all the bleeding.
Try to relax (easier said than done I know!) and rest as much as you can. Wish you all the best🫶🏻

Noshadealltea · 27/09/2024 04:08

I too had red spotting with my FET up to 13 weeks. She is currently 6 months old and fast asleep in bed. As hard as it is, try not to panic. And if you feel you need to have an early reassurance scan xx

Sierra26 · 27/09/2024 17:41

@Suntwinkle ive been falling down Google rabbit holes too, I need to stop! I have a scan at 8 weeks, and have also booked a private one for 6.5. My spotting is switching between brown old looking and brighter/dark red. It’s watery with some very small clots or congealed bits.

I called my clinic today and asked for every test I could think of. They said it could all be normal but sympathised with my anxiety and said they can test my hcg on Monday. They also said I can up my progesterone dose, but I had to basically beg. My transfer was fully medicated so no natural progesterone being made. I’ll monitor and see if that helps.

Keep me posted on how you get on!

Suntwinkle · 30/09/2024 12:34

@CB2805 thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with me - it has been so helpful to read. Congratulations on your twins ❤️

@Sierra26 If you figure out how to stop the Google rabbit holes, teach me! When will your 6.5 scan be?

I've booked for a 6 week and my clinic won't see me until just touched on week 8 as well - 2 weeks feels like a long time even thought I know it isn't.

Good luck with your hcg test today - sending you lots of love for it xoxoxoxo I will keep you posted !

@Suntwinkle I’m now 5+4 and have private scan for 6+6, next week. Spotting lasted 4 days and seems to have completely stopped… coincidence or increased progesterone dose, who knows.

Had hcg blood test today and they haven’t called me with the results yet 😩 so cruel

Suntwinkle · 30/09/2024 19:42

@Sierra26 We are the same - I’m 5+5. I hope this next week passes by so quickly for you to get to your scan ❤️ Good to hear the spotting has stopped - I will keep everything crossed for you! Mine stopped for 2 days and then started again around 6pm tonight…

I hope you get your phone call tomorrow with positive news. I will be thinking of you over the next week and sending you love xoxo

@Suntwinkle got my betaHCG result, 7893 which they said was strong. Relieved about that, now to wait for the scan!

I wonder If my spotting will restart too… Will keep you posted!

Suntwinkle · 01/10/2024 18:42

@Sierra26 this is a great result for today, over the moon for you - sending lots of positivity for next Wednesday 💛 We’re going for a scan tomorrow - I’ve eased off slightly today but still a few clots today which is concerning me. Sending love xoxo

Thankyou, good luck for tomorrow! ❤️ really hoping it’s been nothing to worry about xx

Suntwinkle · 02/10/2024 20:28

@Sierra26 Thank you! We saw a heartbeat ❤️ She asked if the bleeding had stopped and said it could be anything but that she can’t see a reason why on the ultrasound. I am sending you lots of love for this coming week xo

Omg amazing @Suntwinkle im so glad for you! Did they give any indication of dating for you?

I’m so tempted to try to find an earlier scan for this weekend as I’m SO impatient…

Sierra26 · 04/10/2024 08:04

Ugh mine has started again at 6+1, just had some very light pink when wiping. Have updated my scan to tomorrow!

Suntwinkle · 04/10/2024 13:37

You've been on my mind @Sierra26 - if it's just light pink when wiping it sounds like implantation bleed? Mine included clots and red blood as well if it helps to lessen your worries. Good idea to move the scan to tomorrow - I think it's the anxiety around waiting which is so hard to deal with on top of everything else. Will be thinking of you & sending lots of love xo

Sierra26 · 04/10/2024 17:36

Thank you @Suntwinkle ! I’m almost certain it’s too late for implantation now but hoping it’s just the continued burrowing/blood vessel development, or something to do with my cervix. I’ve not had any more since this morning. Will keep you posted tomorrow. 🤞🏻❤️

Sierra26 · 05/10/2024 11:16

@Suntwinkle we have one embryo with a good heartbeat this morning, measuring right on at 6w+2! Sonographer couldn’t see any reason for the spotting. What a relief ❤️ can’t believe it’s real!!

Suntwinkle · 05/10/2024 13:48

@Sierra26 what wonderful news - you’ve been on my mind ❤️ so happy for you!! 6+2 - you must be due 29th May 2025?? We are 24 hours apart if so 🥰 Such a blessing xoxo
