IVF - 5 Weeks Pregnant & Spotting

Hi Everyone,

Very new here.

I am currently 5 weeks & 1 day pregnant and yesterday I had some bleeding. There was what looked like a clot in the toilet and it was red on wipe.

We managed to get booked in for a scan on the same day and it showed pregnancy sac and yolk in place which was very reassuring.

There was no blood overnight which I was relieved to see when I woke up.

The bleeding is still there today - I've got a liner on and changing it every time there is blood. There isn't blood on every wipe - but it's heartbreaking when there is.

Has anyone else had this? Any stories/ help welcome.

@Suntwinkle sorry I missed this, thank you! Yes that’s right. We have reached 7 weeks, you must be 7+1?! Each day feels like a blessing doesn’t it, I never understood why people counted pregnancies in days until now.

How are you feeling? I feel pretty good except I think I might be anaemic so getting tested for that. No spotting since last Sat.

We are absolutely dying to tell family and friends, which we think we’ll start doing if all goes well at our ivf clinic scan next week. It will still be very early but they don’t know anything about our journey and it feels like the right time to bring them in, whatever happens xx

@Sierra26 Sorry sorry sorry for the slow reply!! We've had a stressful week - been bleeding every day since we last spoke - not a lot but almost every time I've been to the loo! How have you been??

We had our first TV scan just yesterday at our clinic who have confirmed everything is looking as it should be - baby growing and a heart beating away at 7+6!!! Felt like we were holding our breath until they told us.

They could see the cause for the bleeding on the scan but have said that where it is shouldn't be an issue for babys continued growth - they had to get another nurse in to confirm that one -which felt like an even longer wait (never been praying for anything more mind you!) From what I understood it was cervical changes causing it.

Did your anaemia test come back yet - you must be telling your friends and family soon? Good luck for your scan this week xo We're holding off until next week I think and will keep it to family we think. Sending love xoxo

Oh @Suntwinkle that must have been worrying for you! But SO great to hear your scan went well and also that they were able to identify the cause of the bleeding. Do you feel any relief now you know?

I had a tiny bit of spotting at the weekend. I think it’s something I’ll just have to get used to. Our scan was moved to Tues which confirmed 7+5, so 8w today now. It was amazing seeing the change in just 10 days since the last scan. They couldn’t see any reason for the bleeds and told me not to worry.

We live quite far away from our families so think we’re telling my sister this weekend as she’s visiting (might not get another face to face chance for months!), in laws next weekend when we see them and then we’ll call my parents. I can’t wait ❤️ but I mostly can’t wait to tell my work colleagues as I spend majority of my time with them!

How are you getting on @Suntwinkle ?

Suntwinkle · 04/11/2024 19:42

Hello @Sierra26 so lovely to hear from you! How did it go sharing the news with both of your families? I’ve had a confirmed cervical erosion (found out at hospital last week) so we’ve got a scan at 13 weeks and one in a few days too - which is very nice of them. How are things with you? xoxo

Oh that’s interesting, was that the EPU who confirmed that? I’m wondering if I have the same but haven’t been examined. My last round of spotting last week started after intercourse and lasted a few days, so I’m wondering if it’s cervix related. I have my 12 wk scan next week but not sure if I’ll see the midwives and that’s definitely beyond the sonographer’s remit!

I had another private scan last week and the progress was amazing - could see all the limbs and it was moving around a lot. It made telling family all the more joyful!

I know this thread is from last year but I found you as I am 5 weeks 3 days after my FET (first pregnancy) and have had this for the first time today and feel devastated. I’m on cyclogest and progynova already and clinic said it coulf be nothing but that it’s apparently too early for a scan. It’s only there when I wipe and was red like the start of a period this afternoon and now more brown. I’m just so terrified and devastated. Your thread has helped me to try to breathe and I really hope everything worked out for you both ❤️❤️

I’ve not had ivf but I experienced bleeding for the first 16 weeks of pregnancy with one or two of the episodes being bright red blood. I was in and out of the EPU what felt like none stop. That pregnancy resulted in my now 18 year old. I know the feelings of terror but please do not lose hope. Plenty of us have experienced bleeding in pregnancy and the babies have been fine. Crossing fingers everything goes well for you.

My IVF baby is now 17. At 8 weeks pregnant I had a heavy bleed so there is a happy ending sometimes.

Sierra26 · 17/10/2025 20:26

@NewhereN congratulations on your pregnancy and sorry you’re going through this stress.

I had a small amount of weekly spotting until around 9 weeks. I still don’t know what it was but I went on to have a very uncomplicated pregnancy (until the birth but that’s a story for another day!). I now a very healthy and thriving 5.5 month old baby boy :)

My heart goes out to you as I remember very clearly how this stage felt, particularly as it was exactly a year ago now so I keep getting little flashbacks. The anxiety was unreal. The only thing any of us can say to help you is that you absolutely CAN have spotting in healthy pregnancies, and it’s really just a waiting game, unfortunately. I had a few private scans in my first trimester and it was so worth doing to ease my nerves and help build my excitement.

I can’t really believe I’m in such a priveledged position now to be able to offer this perspective ❤️ it’s magical.

thinking of you and keep us posted if you’re able to xx
