Where I live it's always transvaginal at that stage.

This was at 6+1

I saw gestational sac, yolk sac, fetal pole, embryo and heartbeat! I was lucky as you don't always see everything so early on.

6+5 fetal pole and heartbeat. Went previously at 5+5 and no fetal pole or heartbeat so it's worth waiting those extra few days

Was this abdominal?

No internal. They don't see the point in abdominal scans before 10 weeks as you can hardly see anything and it's not very accurate

Peonies12 · 10/09/2024 12:47

I had abdominal scan at 6 weeks in the NHS due to spotting, heartbeat was seen. Another at 8 weeks, also abdominal. If you’re chosing a private scan, wait til 8 weeks as there’s much more to see.

May i ask if you were exactly 6 weeks and was the yolk sac embryo visible too?

I was exactly 6 weeks, saw yolk sack, fetal pole and heartbeat but sometimes it's too early for those. I agree with previous poster, if you CAN wait, maybe wait till 8 weeks as you'll see more. But I get it's easier said than done 💛

I’ve just had an abdominal at 8+4 (on a very surprise pregnancy 🙈) and saw head body arms legs and heartbeat.

I’ve never had one at 6 weeks. Could you bear to wait do you think? Is it for reassurance?

I think I was about 6 and a half weeks, and I can’t remember what i saw! I’m not even sure they said. I had had bleeding, and I was just relieved there was a heartbeat, after a miscarriage before.

doodleschnoodle · 10/09/2024 17:40

I had an abdominal at 6+3 and saw flickering blob (heartbeat).

Spomb · 10/09/2024 17:40

I have had one at 6w, saw most things and a heartbeat. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. It was a transvaginal, that’s the norm for my hospital at that stage.

This was my abdominal at 6+3. Can't really see much but we could see a heartbeat.

OP, are you asking about abdominal as that's what you want or because that's all they are offering? At 6 weeks an abdominal won't be as clear or thorough as a transvaginal. The TV is really nothing to get anxious about, I felt no pain or discomfort whatsoever and pointless being shy when you're going to be having a baby 🤣 they're very discreet.

As others have said, you may want to try waiting until after 8 weeks when it will almost certainly be abdominal and the scan will be much clearer/more to see.
Also the risk of MC falls quite considerably once you see a heartbeat after 8 weeks so, for reassurance purposes, it's much better.

6 weeks is very hit and miss whether there'll be anything to see at all so can cause more anxiety than good to be honest. When I had mine so early it was more to check it was developing in the correct location, I was just lucky to be able to see an embryo!

TheShellBeach · 10/09/2024 17:58

Why are you being scanned, OP?

Shahhhh · 10/09/2024 18:46

Mine was internal.

NorthantsNewbie · 10/09/2024 18:51

I had one the other day, believing I was 6+5, but sonographer said probably 6+1, so only just over the threshold. She did abdominal first, but couldn’t see anything, then with an internal we saw the fetal pole, yolk sac and heartbeat.

With DC1 we had an early scan at 8 weeks and it was much, much clearer. Abdominal got a really clear image, and a nice strong heartbeat.

Thumberline · 10/09/2024 18:53

Around six weeks I remember they could see the yolk sack and fetal pole but had to go trans vaginal to see the heart beat.

negomi90 · 10/09/2024 19:09

I had a transvaginal at 7 weeks. It was the least uncomfortable transvaginal I've ever had (IVF so I had about 6/7 during the getting pregnant phase).
My nurse offered an abdo ultrasound, but said that vaginal was better and if they struggled to see baby on abdo, they'd switch to TV anyway. I chose not to take the risk of stressing while she tried to find something and then switch probes. On TV, baby had head, arms, legs, tail, and a yolk sack, plus heart beat.

Seriously just go for a TV at this stage. Its way clearer, and you see more.

Sorry you've had an ectopic previously, hopefully this will be a successful pregnancy for you. Good luck.

I had an abdominal scan at 6+1 and saw a tiny blob with a heartbeat.

Thank-you. A few of my friends said they have seen sac and yolk sac One friend said no point in going at 6 weeks for abdominal as nothing visible so confused and don't want to waste money but ideally need know
