Thank-you. A few of my friends said they have seen sac and yolk sac One friend said no point in going at 6 weeks for abdominal as nothing visible so confused and don't want to waste money but ideally need know

If it's a private scan that you're paying for and can choose when to go then 100% wait till over 8 weeks!

6 weeks is extremely hit and miss. You might be lucky and see something but there's no guarantee at all.
Also abdominal is not as sensitive as transvaginal at such an early stage so it's a risk you take that there won't be anything to see yet

OP you should be getting an early scan on the NHS if you’ve had a previous ectopic.

But in answer to your question I had a trans vaginal scan at the EPU at 5 weeks something and there was only a yolk sac. I had an abdominal exactly a week after and they saw a heartbeat. It wasn’t very clear to me at all but it was good enough for reassurance for them and I was discharged from the EPU.

Have you sought a scan on the NHS? I was told it was standard care post ectopic.

Had a trans vag scan at 6w+1, could see little blob and the heartbeat etc, it was via EPU and was reassuring just to know everything was ok. Booked a private scan for 9w+5, abdominal, and could see so much more.

I agree with PP if you can hold out a few weeks longer then I would honestly recommend that, if you’re a little earlier than you think you might not see anything at that point

No longer living in the uk we have to go private here. I will be about 6weeks 1 day im not too worried about seeing features hb at the moment would be nice to know we will get to see a developing baby though even if tiny still

I had an abdominal at what I thought was 7 weeks but baby measured 6+2. It was a really clear picture, you could see everything you should (gestational sac, yolk sac, baby (which looks like a peanut) and a heartbeat).

Lower bmi helps, as well as a full bladder. But I think it's also just a bit of luck whether you are someone who they can everything abdominally or not at this stage.

Womder if the fact i have had a previous c section coukd make a difference

I’ve had an ectopic and section but they still scan vaginally, I’m not sure why they won’t do that for you?

sel2223 · 11/09/2024 10:06

OP, I also live overseas and have private health care. My first birth was a c section and here they recommend an early scan specifically to see that the pregnancy is in the right location and not ectopic - it's always transvaginal up to 8 weeks.

I don't know why a previous ectopic or c section would mean you have to have abdominal scans only?

Was yours abdominal

yes mine was abdominal. I went to NHS EPU due to bleeding. Is it that you don't want an internal? You won't see much at 6 weeks, and whilst they can check location, of course there's no guarantees even if everything ok at 6 weeks.

It shouldn't.
I had four CS and scans weren't more difficult.

Good luck, OP!
