Any fellow horseowners here ? I’m 14+3 and still riding, popping the odd log etc. Anyone else still riding ?

Yes! I've really enjoyed Oster's Expecting Better! It's mostly known for the chapters dissecting the evidence for drinking alcohol and coffee etc, so the second half on the birth plan stuff was unexpected and I found it super helpful. I had totally forgotten she had written another book, I will look for that.

@KittyFantastica I've heard of the What to Expect book, glad to hear it's good!

Also on the subject of books I found Siobhan Miller's Hypnobirthing book questionable and remarkably lacking in content, apart from a paragraph on down-breathing and up-breathing, which I didn't understand from her description anyway!

I wanted to lob Lucy Jones's Matresence across the room multiple times (although unfortunately I was listening to it on audiobook so that would have just been my own phone!) It was seemingly based purely on her own birth rather than any evidence whatsoever and she said a few things that I'm certain are plain wrong.

BUT I did pick up one good tip from Matrescence, which was another book (lol) by Juju Sundin called Birth Skills. I've bought a copy for a penny online and might be really interesting for anyone else who would like to try and get through without an epidural. It's something a bit different from the idea we can just sit there all zen, focusing on our breathing, and puts much more focus on moving around.

@Redapple21 so glad your test was negative, what a relief for you!

Thank you for the recommendation @CarrotySnack! Just bought a copy of JuJu Sundin's book secondhand, if I'm able to I'm looking at a birth centre that has better maternity outcomes than the hospitals in my city. I've only heard great things about it but it would mean an epidural isn't an option so that's so useful!

I'm 14 weeks today, and I seem to have developed the teeniest of bumps overnight!

I haven't had any blood results yet, and I've been waiting for them to make sure all is well before I tell the other children, so I could do with them hurrying up a bit. We're going on holiday on the 6th, so I think we might tell them whilst away, and if they hate the idea, at least they have a massive waterpark to take their mind off of things!

@Lidlisthebusiness I'm the same bump wise also at 14 weeks and it's my first! We went to a wedding this weekend and my dress was a very thin material and some of the family we've told already were commenting on my little bump! I was quite happy about it though because when I'd tried it on a few days prior I thought hmm I hope I look pregnant now and not just like I've gained a belly!

So tricky when to tell kids isn't it! I think we'll be around 16 weeks by the first, right? Water park sounds like a great distraction!

Toriiaa · 26/08/2024 09:10

Hi ladies! Sorry I've been away from socials for a while. I like a detox from time to time- can't get my head around the fact I'm 17 weeks pregnant.
In regards to books, Am I allowed by Beverley Beech was a fantastic read for me. It's really good on understanding how the system works and what some terminology is.

I had the naked doula hypnobirth course last year, but I'll be buying her book

The Fearless Birth Book (The Naked Doula): Find Your Power, Influence Your Birth amzn.eu/d/9mf0Tts

I love understanding the physiological part of birth and labour, the writer of this book is incredible

Anyone got any recommendations for maternity jeans which work with a small bump? I've yet to try any but looking at ASOS and New Look and they are all modelled with a big bump. I'm 16 weeks and down to my last pair of normal jeans that I can still - just about - wear. I'm concerned that if I order some they'll just be falling down at the waist!

You can get fabric inserts for jeans to extend the use of your non maternity ones. They button in, and look like a normal pair of maternity jeans do with the fabric panel. Could that be a plan?

Aw, that's so sweet! This is my 6th, sonI was wondering when thr bump might appear.

Yes, I'll be 16 weeks the weekend after we go, I'm hoping by then I'll have heard something back about my test results and can let then know. I think most of them will be happy about it, but my eldest is nearly 15, so I think she'll struggle a bit. I had a very odd thought about the fact at one point in the future I will have a 30yr old and a 15yr old!

superj21 · 26/08/2024 11:28

@Lidlisthebusiness I didn't know this was a thing but that sounds like a great idea!

Not quite the same but I'm still running! And occasionally I come across a log across my trail route, though popping sounds more elegant and quicker than anything I'm doing!
I hope you don't mind me saying, though, that I had thought horseriding was one of the few sports that some people don't think are so suited to pregnancy, especially after the first trimester since then the baby is no longer protected by the pelvis in case of a fall. But I'm sure it really does depend on you and your horse - you will know best what is overall right for you.

DearKoala · 26/08/2024 12:53

@superj21 I found a good pair of jeans in H and M which are maternity but rather than having an over the bump band and just elasticated. I find they are fitting well just now and a bonus was they were in the sale.

superj21 · 26/08/2024 13:41

Thanks @DearKoala I might take a trip down to H&M 😊

5431go · 26/08/2024 20:21

@CarrotySnack

My horse is fairly chill and I’m just hacking mainly. A top lady within the sport was still eventing at 5 months! Her name is Mary King.

And tbh I feel this small pleasure makes up for the risk I feel I’m exposed to at work! I’m a Doctor and have already seen various illnesses that I probably shouldn’t have throughout the early days. Now people know I’m a bit more protected, but still.

Lidlisthebusiness · 27/08/2024 11:50

I only said yesterday that I hoped to get my screening results soon, and they arrived today! Not sure how helpful it is to anyone else, but my numbers were 1 in 894 for DS, and 1 in 3644 for Edwards and Pataus, both considered low risk which is great to read, as considering my age, I was definitely expecting it to be higher.

retrievermum · 27/08/2024 12:30

@superj21 the ASOS ones are pretty good even with a little bump! I got quite big quite quickly with both pregnancies but I found them fine to wear from as soon as I started getting bloated, they pull up quite high so I just tucked them under my bra but they never fell down! I did find I couldn’t wear them past about 34 weeks with my daughter, but I had polyhydramnios so I was HUGE! I’m only 17+3 now but have been back in them for about six weeks and they’re fitting perfectly now, but I’d recommend sizing down if you’re between two sizes (I’m an 8/10 pre pregnancy and the 10s are too big)

superj21 · 27/08/2024 12:42

Thanks @retrievermum ! I've actually just ordered a couple from ASOS to try so fingers crossed!

ThisLimeDeer · 27/08/2024 14:08

Congratulations @Lidlisthebusiness it’s such a relief to see a low risk result!

I’ve looked for maternity clothes over the weekend and found none on the high street! I swear shops used to have whole maternity sections and now either they only sell them online or hide them very well!

im not actually a fan of shopping online as I like to try things on, especially now when I feel so bloated and fat 😭

CarrotySnack · 27/08/2024 15:11

@ThisLimeDeer I've been saying the same about the high street! Years ago so many shops had a maternity section, I was always ending up in one by accident. Now even M&S only does a few bras, and some leggings which don't sound great from the reviews. Yet another rug pulled out from under millenials once it's 'our turn', as it were?!

I've been buying a few things on ebay etc and would tend to mix-and-match old/new anyway, but I've already made the mistake of buying some leggings that don't fit! (Nike sizes come up small!)

Oh I recommend the maternity leggings from ASOS! Mine was a 2 pack for about £20. I don't have much of a bump yet (almost 15w) but my other leggings were pressing on my abdomen uncomfortably. I was worried the mat ones would be too baggy around the waist but they fit perfectly! They even feel kind of supportive and it's a great soft, opaque material that goes over the bump and feels like it will stretch well.

I've been very reluctant to take them off and I'm going to start wearing them to work more (teacher but I think I can get away with it with a dress or long shirt over the top)

ExpectoMumPatronum · 28/08/2024 10:37

Hello 👋 - I am jumping into this thread, I'm almost 17 weeks, due 6 Feb. I've been on the Reddit Feb 2025 Bumps group for a while, but it is so American 😂 I need some British perspective sometimes!

And mostly I need some maternity leggings recommendations... H&M were ok but have now ripped and are also too saggy and see through. Lovall and M&S activewear ones are already too tight. Any suggestions?

Also, anyone else suffering with super itchy nipples recently? I'm scared to use a hot/cold nipple pad incase it brings on colostrum 🙈

Odessa1 · 28/08/2024 12:22

Hello! I'm aware this is a very fortunate position to be in, but I'm finding it so overwhelming! We know so many people who are clearly desperate to part with their baby stuff whether it's clothes, prams, high chairs.. literally everything. I keep getting asked if I want to buy something off them. I'm only 17 weeks pregnant. We haven't even discussed things we want or need. It's so ridiculous but I'm getting so overwhelmed with the daily offerings of people trying to offload their stuff 😂

CarrotySnack · 28/08/2024 14:32

@Odessa1 Wow, I'd say yes while they are offering, if it's free or cheap, unless it's something you don't want in which case please redirect them to me 😂 (I'm only half kidding, and I live in the north east and my parents/in laws all live in London/Kent in case any of us are nearby!)
From what I can see from a trip to Mamas and Papas at the weekend, I'm surprised how similar all the brands are, and how non-negociable the kit list is. In your position I'd take anything!

@ExpectoMumPatronum scroll up for some good leggings tips from @ridl14 which I may well try thank you ridl (although I prefer cotton leggings for round the house... So still open to tips if anyone has any cotton ones!)

SBelfast · 28/08/2024 16:20

@ExpectoMumPatronum hey I got some jojo maman bebe black cotton maternity leggings and am loving them so far. Super comfortable and I've awful bloating and look a lot further along than 16 weeks 😂
Only con is I think looking at them now they may be slightly see through. Can't check the ass area as I've only noticed this sitting in GPs waiting room waiting for me whooping cough vaccine haha.
I'm wearing them with oversized jumpers anyway so modesty is kept 😂

Toriiaa · 28/08/2024 19:32

@SBelfast I'm with you. The jojo mama stuff is so lovely.
I picked some bits up off vinted too.

I can't believe I'm only 17 weeks and I've bought my double pram 😂

Anyone else looking to invest in a double? What have you gone for?

And as a tip, if anyone's planning to try and have baby 2 quickly after baby one, please buy a double pushchair now. I really do regret not buying this cybex gazelle. We would have saved a tonne of money as bought the Venicci tinum upline new from the baby show last year

No double here but I had 2 under 2 with my others and we got a secondhand donkey and really loved it! Cumbersome in the car which is annoying but loved that the baby could be parent facing
