Hey, I’m 34 weeks pregnant exactly today. I have been feeling poorly on and off since 27th. I have been admitted for 3 nights, in maternity triage for 2 separate days , all day. Bloods , monitoring etc and nothing can be found. I am amemic , on iron twice a day. But not anemic enough to require infusion. I believe my Hemaglobin levels are 98.

these are my symptoms today-

Vomiting a lot (just bile)
Weight loss
Nausea (slight)
Itchy hands and feet (sometimes whole body)
Floaters (strange vision)
Loss of hand eye coordination (feeling like my hands aren’t mine)
Numb hands (one hand at a time)and lips
Headpain (sometimes)
Heart palpitations
Anemia but not enough to require infusion (levels 98 I think) taking iron twice a day.
Low blood pressure
Pulse up and down
Jaundice (very pale)
No appetite

ive been told migrain, symptoms of anemia etc I just feel like something isn’t right.

Sorry you're not feeling well. Some of those do sound like symptoms of migraine

cheezncrackers · 05/07/2024 15:21

That's a lot of symptoms. I'm quite surprised they discharged you without a diagnosis. What did they tell you about what they think is wrong OP? Stomach bug of some kind? Low iron can make you feel pretty shit, its true, and being on iron supplements can give you nausea and vomiting if they've put you on a high dose. Do you know what you're on?

Devilsmommy · 05/07/2024 15:24

Kind of sounds like a thyroid issue. Apparently it's quite common to get over/under active thyroid caused by pregnancy. I'd definitely be going to the GP again. Hope you figure it out 🤞

Jessiecat123 · 05/07/2024 15:29

@cheezncrackers they have given no answers. Apart from all of my bloods are absolutely fine. Except my iron levels. I’m on ferrous fumarate 210mg twice a day. Thing that’s weird is I took it yesterday morning and evening and was never sick or anything. And I had already been sick before taking my first tablet today. Then took it and then threw it up.

@Justhereforaibu1

it is possibly just seems like I keep getting palmed off

thats something I haven’t thought of, I guess anything is a possibility. I just feel like I don’t have trust in the hospital I am at.

op have you had your liver function tested for obstetric cholestasis, due to your itchy hands and feet?

Yep all within the levels😭 I just don’t get it! It feels like something should be showing up but it just isn’t

Did they do a bile acids test?
Please make sure you request a paper print out of your bloodwork results .

Yeah I had bile acids taken and liver function. Which apparently is all okay. I have heard sometimes they have to retest for them as icp/ cholestasis takes a while to show up on bloods after symptoms start.

My liver function tests went from normal to like a million overnight (can't remember how the readings work but you get the gist) with cholestasis. It's not like it goes 10, 12, 14 oh yes this is high, it goes 10, 20, 1000 or whatever. With my second pregnancy, I was getting bloods done weekly, and was itchy for weeks before they suddenly went sky high. You should probably ask for weekly testing. First ended up induced 2 weeks early. Second was scheduled for induction on due date but came the day before.

cheezncrackers · 05/07/2024 16:27

210 mg x 2 daily is a lot. I would definitely feel nauseous and possibly throw up if I was put on that. I would talk to your doctor about taking a lower dose initially and gradually titrating up as it's more gentle on your stomach.

I'm on Active Iron and I take 4 of those once a day, which is a total of 100 mg per day. A lot of people can't take lots of iron in one go.

Do you have any idea why one day I am fine with taking it and the next I’m not? I always take with food or just after food. The vomiting started before taking my morning tablet this morning. I held off taking it as I knew I was going to be sick.

No, I'm not a doctor, but I would guess it's cumulative. You took a high dose yesterday and tolerated it, but a high dose again today you didn't. However, I would definitely be asking a medic about this and not just listening to someone off MN. It is well known though that many people find iron hard to tolerate and it can be very hard on your stomach initially.

I’ve seen multiple midwives , and doctors. I’ve been impatient and was in MAU twice this week for over 6 hours at a time. I just wanted to see if anyone had any advice or experienced similar symptoms to
me.

Do ensure they repeat the necessary liver tests. I had multiple tests for icp that were negative, but one of my babies was very small in late pregnancy and if wasn’t until retested later that it was more apparent.
It is difficult though as so many of your symptoms could be easily dismissed as normal pregnancy symptoms, (eye floaters for example of the clear annoying kind are very common in pregnancy). Did everything come on simultaneously at the same time?

When I say eye floaters , I mean everything goes fuzzy and blurry and I can’t focus on anything. It’s like an out of body experience. I find it hard to get speech out and can’t seem to work my phone properly. Like I go to message my partner to say I’m not feeling well and it all comes out as gibberish so I end up trying to voice note.

The first time it happened (for the first time the other day) it started with my vision and just feeling weird , then the numbness and then the sharp headache. This morning I have had all the same symptoms except the headache.

That sounds awful for you, sorry you’re going through that. Everything you’ve described sounds exactly like my migraines - like could’ve written this myself when going through one. Have they tried prescribing your migraine medication?

That sounds like blood pressure fluctuations. That's pretty normal in pregnancy - the eyes going blurry, everything messy, I liken it to the fuzz you used to get on TV when there was no signal (if you remember this). Freaked me out the first time it happened but I learned to just sit or lie down when it happened again. I don't think it had anything to do with the cholestasis.

Cabbageandcoconut · 06/07/2024 23:05

It does sound like migraine, in that the mouth and hands are affected which I think is what’s called a cheiro - oral aura. Does it affect your tongue too? With a migraine the tongue involvement can be a telltale migraine sign.
It could be that there are a few things going on at once, but I hope you find answers.

curiouscat1987 · 06/07/2024 23:51

Gestational diabetes? Sounds similar to when i have a hypo to be honest! Do you feel woozy and dizzy also?

curiouscat1987 · 06/07/2024 23:54

Also if low iron is the key symptom it could perhaps be related to haemachromatosis. Normally that causes too much iron, but a relative of mine has the genetic markers for it and presents as dangerously low iron which can make her really sick. Fairly unlikely though as haemachromatosis is quite rare anyway!

MixedCouple2 · 06/07/2024 23:56

Iron supplements should ve taking every other day. It is ineffective and counter productive to take daily.

Have they done a full liver function test non fasting? Itching and jaundice can be a sign of ICP.

Hope they get to the bottom of it all.
