Early scan measuring behind

bluebutterfly8 · 10/05/2024 11:37

Hi

I've just had an early scan and should be 6+3, but I've measured 5 weeks!

I'm certain of my period because I note it down every month.

She could see a sac but nothing inside. :-(

Coming back for another scan in a week.

Anyone experienced this, what does it mean? Is this a bad sign..

Tia

My scan around that time was about 5 days out. I knew the exact dates as it was ivf. It’s just so small that they can’t be that accurate in measuring. Was all fine by next scan. Don’t worry

waryandbored · 10/05/2024 11:41

Hi, sorry you’re having a worrying time. I had very similar. My dates put me at 6 weeks but an early scan due to bleeding only showed a gestational sac. I returned a week later to see a yolk sac, and 10 days after that to see an embryo with a heartbeat. By that point, my dates put me at 8+2 but they measured me as 7+2. I’ve just had my dating scan which lined up perfectly with those dates rather than mine. I guess I ovulated later than I thought. Hope the same is the case for you.

@ACR7 @wwaryandbored

I'm so glad it worked out for you and fingers crossed it does for me. The nurse did say it could be fine but we have to explore all possibilities.

I've just been handed the leaflet for Pregnancy of unknown location - maybe I misunderstood what the sonographer was explaining and she didn't find a gestational sac? I'm so confused - does this mean they couldn't see a gestational sac.

Waiting for a blood test and then again on weekend to check my HCG levels.

She said she'll call me once she gets the results for the blood test now - hoping it's good news!

After 5 miscarraiges and then couldn't get preg for around a year - I just don't have a good feeling about this. Sat in one of the rooms holding tears whilst waiting for a blood test - what a journey!

I’m measuring a week behind too
which I think is bizarre as we know date of conception lol
all fine though, apparent your ovulation can be way out 🤷🏽‍♀️

I had exactly the same thing. They said ‘this looks like a gestational sac but we can’t be sure’ so diagnosed a pregnancy of unknown location. They measured my HCG levels which doubled in 48 hours and then rescanned me, at which point they saw the yolk sac. Best of luck xx

There is a post like this every day. It’s too early. It should be fine; they shouldn’t offer them this early unless there is a specific concern.

How can you know for sure? OPKs give you a positive when you are going to ovulate in the next 72 hours. Unless it was IVF.

SPsmama · 10/05/2024 13:10

A single millimetre mistake can make a weeks difference at this stage.

I've had two early scans that were behind, one was a MMC a few weeks later and the other is currently fighting his nap and pissing about in his cot.

There's no straight answer I'm afraid, I hope you get the answer you want.

The poster (like me) has had 5 miscarriages. They always offer early scans for people who unfortunately have to go through this. It’s to make sure they can do everything they can at the early stages. This is completely common for recurrent miscarriages.

CadoAvo · 10/05/2024 13:47

I'm sorry to say I had a similar experience and it didn't end well. I was 6+2 but at the scan they said I measured more like 5+2. They could see the sac but no yolk or heartbeat yet. I asked if they could rule out ectopic with seeing the sac but she said no, not yet as the scan was classed as inconclusive which might be the reason for your leaflet. They rebooked me in for a scan 10 days later. Unfortunately started bleeding at 6+6 and by the time I went back for my scan it was confirmed as a miscarriage, which I knew by that point anyway.

However I also want to say during this time I read many, many stories on Mumsnet and Reddit etc where people had very similar stories and worries and when scanned again the pregnancy had grown and heartbeat detected. There really is no way of knowing except waiting for the next scan. It really can go either way, hold onto hope.

I'm currently 4+5 with my second pregnancy. Best of luck to you and hope you get some happy answers 🤞🏼

SnookyPook · 10/05/2024 14:11

I had an early scan at 7+2 at epu due to recurring losses. I was measuring 6+2 with a heartbeat. I've stayed a week behind the whole way and am almost at 27wks now. It's one of those things that really can go either way but as others have said, the measurements so early can be very precarious. Equally, someone who is measuring perfectly could still go on to MC unfortunately. Early pregnancy is tough. Sending you lots of good vibes - hopefully this is a sticky rainbow bean 🙏🏼🌈💕

bluebutterfly8 · 10/05/2024 15:02

@waryandbored
I'm impatiently waiting for the first call re the 1st blood test today! If this is at a good number then I'll have hope for Sundays blood test (the 48 hour one). I'm assuming I'll have another scan too.
I'm glad yours went well!

@SnookyPook
You're right - there's no definitive way a situation like this could go. It's all a matter of luck I guess.

Can I just say thank you to everyone who has commented. You never know how much your words could impact a person going through what seems like the 10th storm in a row.

@Revelatio
I'm sorry to hear about your miscarraiges. And yes, it definitely is common to have early scans in these situations.
Honestly, wouldn't wish this on anyone.

@CadoAvo
I'm in exact same situation as you were. It's horrible isn't it. I've spent the last 2 weeks dreading going to the loo just incase I see blood. Thankfully, I haven't yet but if I'm honest I don't have much hope with this pregnancy.
I'm so glad you're preg again - goodluck :-) Life is such a rollercoaster of emotions, isn't it!

@SPsmama
Thank you for your kind words. It can go either way and worst thing is we don't have any control over it. We sort of just have to sit back and watch helplessly.

What can they do at that stage? These early scans seem to cause so much anxiety.

Sunshineclouds11 · 10/05/2024 16:20

Happened with both my pregnancies;

1st via IVF, so we knew dates exactly

2nd via just having sex one so also knew exactly when also.

They are honestly so small the smallest movement can knock them off.

Best of luck

bluebutterfly8 · 12/05/2024 16:21

Hi

Not sure if anyones interested but had my 48 hour HCG blood test today.

It had increased by 65% which the nurse said sounded 'promising'. I've been called for a scan in 7 days.

Fingers crossed

Sounds good op!

IVF clinics like to see atleast double 🍀

bluebutterfly8 · 12/05/2024 21:58

@Sunshineclouds11

Thankyou! Hopefully, it is good news next week!

Worst thing is I haven't told anyone in RL so I'm feeling all the emotions on my own.
Can't empathise enough with the ladies going through infertility/miscarraiges - it drains you!

User79853257976 · 10/05/2024 15:58

What can they do at that stage? These early scans seem to cause so much anxiety.

They can prescribe progesterone, antibiotics, blood thinners, etc depending on your circumstances. The best thing for me is that I don’t have to wait until 12 weeks to see if I need surgical management. My body doesn’t seem to process a foetus that’s stopped growing, so I can sort things out as soon as possible and get on with my life rather than waiting 12 weeks not knowing if the cells are alive or dead. Carrying around a dead bunch of cells is not much fun believe me!!

Since having these early scans they also managed to help me grow a successful baby through prescription medication, and to catch an ectopic early on, letting me keep both tubes. I will be forever grateful to the EPu and my early scans, definitely the opposite of anxiety inducing for me!!

Good luck OP, I hope things go well for you

bluebutterfly8 · 14/05/2024 16:54

@Revelatio

You wrote that so well! Honestly, could not explain it better - every word!

I'm on progesterone currently.
I've got a UTI that I'm on anti biotics for - tomorrows last day of taking them but I feel like it still hasn't gone because of a burning sensation :/ Now, that's an added stress.

I've got a scan booked for next Monday afternoon - fingers crossed it goes well.

My symptoms are on & off.

Every minute of this pregnancy is awful so far - the uncertainty of whether or not I'm actually carrying a baby that is growing or there's just an empty sac is by far the worst feeling ever.

OP posts:
Revelatio · 15/05/2024 13:16

I hope all goes well for Monday. I know how hard it is, it’s difficult to explain to people who haven’t been through multiple miscarriages. I get a bit blasé about them now, in terms of just wanting to know if it’s viable so I can move on with my life!

In my last successful pregnancy, I don’t think I ever properly relaxed, just waited out the milestones. The day I started to enjoy it as I went on maternity leave I went into labour!!

I really hope it all works out for you. We are trying for number 2 now and it’s another long slog!!

bluebutterfly8 · 20/05/2024 14:12

Hi

Just an update.

I just had my scan. We're still in the same position as we were at the scan 10 days ago except what they can see has grown 'a little'.

The sonographer did say usually at this point, they should be able to see more. So, it doesn't look.

I don't know what to think. Has anyone else experienced this?

OP posts:
TheShellBeach · 20/05/2024 14:17

I'm sorry you didn't get more positive news today.
I know how bad you're feeling as I had a lot of miscarriages.

What is the plan now for you? Have they taken more blood for hCG?

TheShellBeach · 20/05/2024 14:18

So by dates you're almost 8 weeks now. They should be able to see a heartbeat at this stage, as I'm sure you know.
It's just heartbreaking.

bluebutterfly8 · 20/05/2024 14:26

@TheShellBeach

It's been 7 weeks 1 day since my last period and according to the last scan I should be 6 weeks 4 days.

I'm sat in the waiting room waiting for the doctor to call me. I can only assume they'll do more blood tests to check hcg levels and another scan after maybe 10 days..

It's the unknown that frightens me and the anxeity of not having any control of this situation!

I'm sorry you've previous miscarraiges, it's horrible isn't it! Flowers
