Hey everyone!

I have just stumbled across this group and I am so glad as I was hoping to find some ladies with similar due dates. I am 16 weeks this week, I have a private scan booked for Sunday to find out the gender. We get a little video of the ultrasound which is what swayed me to book the appointment rather than wait for the 20 week scan.

My pregnancy hasn't been plain sailing but feel like I am getting my head around everything now. At my booking appointment at 9 weeks I found out that I have developed gestational diabetes, I also have HG so have been battling both at the same time which hasn't been the easiest. I am on medication for the sickness but still being sick, It has eased off a bit so hoping it will get much more manageable. I haven't been well enough to go anywhere or do anything yet in pregnancy, the sickness had me wiped out. My aversions to smells are still quite bad, I tried doing a food shop in tesco and the smell of all of the perfumes and aftershaves wasn't fun 😁

Have you ladies started buying anything yet? I haven't and I guess don't feel 'pregnant' enough yet but I feel like small joys really help at the moment!

My due date is the 18th October 👶xxx

WickWood · 29/04/2024 17:40

@GingerJ Sorry you've been having a tough time! How exciting, bet you can't wait for Sunday!

We've been buying clothes, started way too early, but couldn't resist! We have quite a few clothes now, some from family too, and some blankets, towels, hats, bibs etc. My grandma has just ordered our pram (that we chose) I've struggled with sickness and illness too, so shopping has definitely helped me to get my head around being pregnant!

LuxeBiscuit · 29/04/2024 17:57

@CluelessInLondon that was a lovely message!

I think it may also be coupled with the fact that in the early second trimester nothing much seems to happen. I've felt back to normal for the last few weeks to a point where I sometimes forget.

Hopefully we'll all feel a bit more attached once there's regular movement.

@TubbyCustard11 not distinct movement but flutters starting around 13/4 weeks but then it stopped for about a week. The sensation seems to be back. I'm very ticklish and it feels like I'm being ticked from the inside. I instinctively scratch my tummy in response lol.

RobynC28 · 29/04/2024 17:59

@GingerJ not buying anything until after the 20 week scan. Hopefully if all goes well we can relax and buy some bits.
I'm 17+3. I don't think I've felt anything yet but it's hard to tell when apparently it just feels like digestion - because I've definitely felt that!

GingerJ · 29/04/2024 18:40

@WickWood sorry that you have also been struggling with feeling rubbish :( so exciting that you have your pram! Which one did you choose? I’m really excited to pick my pram, it’s one thing I want to indulge in and pick something I’d really like. I’m luckily getting a second hand cot and furniture from my bother which should save some money!

@RobynC28 I was thinking around the same benchmark but might get a few things after my gender scan! I feel like I may have felt a few flutters but really can’t be sure just yet!

GingerJ · 29/04/2024 18:57

@WickWood That is really lovely! Did you go and see it in the shops before purchasing? I quite like the look of the black or the biscotti I candy peach. Probably go with black as I’m sure it will get so dirty! Prams are so pricey I want to make the right choice!

WickWood · 29/04/2024 19:02

@GingerJ The icandy is lovely! We did visit mamas and papas but didn't really try them out properly or shop around, if I'm honest it was quite an impulsive decision so I'm scared to look at other prams in case I prefer them! I was getting overwhelmed with what to get, travel system, car seat etc, so we decided on that one pretty quickly just so it was one less thing to worry about! There is so much to plan/do/buy!!

mrssunshinexxx · 29/04/2024 19:07

Welcome @GingerJ ,3rd baby here so not much to buy, only clothes as it's the opposite sex so that's exciting x

GingerJ · 30/04/2024 09:45

@WickWood No need to look at other prams now you have yours and you are happy with it! I agree there is sooo much to buy. I have a really long list of things that are needed it's quite overwhelming, even trying to just get the necessity's it's still a lot to get 😅

CluelessInLondon · 30/04/2024 09:45

@WeightoftheWorld @LuxeBiscuit Glad the pep talk helped! @LuxeBiscuit I think you're right that a lot of anxiety stems from not much happening in the first half of the second trimester - the symptoms start to ease, there isn't much contact with the health service and suddenly it's like "wait, am I actually even pregnant or did I imagine it all?". It's definitely been a shock to my system to go from having 3 scans in the first trimester to nothing for several weeks!

@TubbyCustard11 I'm 18+3 and haven't felt any movement yet - I get lots of random twinges and wonder if that's it, but I think it's just everything stretching and growing. It's my first so I know it might be a while before I notice anything, and 12 week scan report shows that my placenta was growing anterior so if it hasn't moved then that might mean it's a bit longer until I feel anything. I would feel better if I could feel movement though, it's definitely one of the things contributing to anxiety for me.

@GingerJ Welcome and congratulations - sorry to hear that you've been having a rough time of it, I hope things start to improve for you so you can relax and enjoy it a bit more. I haven't started buying anything yet, not planning to until after the 20 week scan - we booked a babymoon at the weekend for June and I already feel like I'm jinxing things by planning a holiday, so I definitely don't want to buy anything for baby yet! We've started to do some prep work for what will eventually be baby's room - choosing a paint colour and some other decorating stuff that has needed doing for years but we hadn't got round to it yet. Everything else we're planning to sort over the summer once we're a bit more confident that it's all progressing okay.

Can I ask what your thoughts on the 16 week midwife appointment if you've had yours? It reminded me of that meme - this could have been an email.

She wasn't very knowledgeable and seemed to just focus on typing info. She didn't check the heartbeat and when I asked questions the response was you can do your own research?!!

I have a UTI that's worse after the third course of antibiotics. I think I'll self refer to a specialist.
I'm fortunate that I have medical insurance through work so I haven't had a lot of interaction with the NHS for a few years. Maybe this is just how it is in my trust.

CluelessInLondon · 30/04/2024 11:40

@LuxeBiscuit I had my 16 week appointment a couple of weeks ago, it was pretty mundane and didn't really add much value - blood pressure check, urine dip, gave me some information about antenatal/breastfeeding classes and a blood test request form for having bloods done before my 28 week appointment, booked my 25 week appointment. That was about it! She did at least answer a few questions I'd come prepared with so it sounds like my experience was a bit better than yours. I think not checking the heartbeat is a standard policy for a lot of trusts as it's hard to find at 16 weeks and can provoke anxiety so they don't do it - it wasn't offered at my appointment and I didn't ask as I'd already read that a lot of services won't do it that early on.

@LuxeBiscuit I've got my 16 week appointment tomorrow even though I'm technically still in my 15th week, it seems ages ago since I saw them

WeightoftheWorld · 30/04/2024 17:02

Oh my gosh my bump seems to have hugely suddenly popped over the last couple of days. I cannot believe how big I am compared to the previous two times! Are you similar @mmrssunshinexxx and anyone else on their 3rd+? Im only 15 weeks but I look how I did at like 24 weeks or something with DC1 haha. Mostly in maternity clothes now already.

mrssunshinexxx · 30/04/2024 17:32

Yes I feel way bigger ! @WeightoftheWorld still somehow in my size 10 jeans but very uncomfortable by the end of the day !

MF94 · 30/04/2024 17:35

I havent got a 16w appointment put in by my trust (first baby) which i think seems odd as everyone else seems to have one! Im 15w today and i’ve got a bump although it is still small enough to be justified as belly fat 😂

LuxeBiscuit · 30/04/2024 17:45

@CluelessInLondon yes, it was very underwhelming but at least you got answers to a few questions.

@rachisamumtobe hopefully yours is a bit more interesting!

@MF94 are you in England? If so, it might be worth getting in touch with your midwife as I understood 16 week appointments to be across the board.

CluelessInLondon · 30/04/2024 18:04

@MF94 My understanding is the same as @LuxeBiscuit - that everyone should have an appointment at 16 weeks (some of the appointments are dependent on whether or not it's your first baby/whether the pregnancy is high risk). So definitely worth chasing up - my community midwife service managed to book my 16 week appointment for 20 weeks by mistake and it took loads of chasing to get them to schedule it correctly, so make sure they haven't booked you in for the wrong point in your pregnancy or something like that!

OP posts:
WickWood · 30/04/2024 18:55

@MF94 I agree with others, I've had a 16 week midwife appointment and assumed this was across the board.

I'm 18+1 with my first and definitely have a bump now.

I love your shirt. Is it maternity??

RobynC28 · 30/04/2024 19:12

@MF94 my '16 week' appointment is at 20 weeks. I checked and they said it was anytime between 16 and 21 weeks in my trust.

My bump is that awkward stage where I just look like I've eaten alot of carbs (which tbf I have!). Going on holiday next week and tried my summer wardrobe on and I just look so chubby! I want it to pop more so I look properly pregnant!

To be really honest I find it a bit challenging to accept the weight gain as I've always been slim and worked really hard to stay that way. I also got quite into my fitness over the past few years but I'm now still unable to walk even short distances without being exhausted, feeling faint or breathless. (really hoping this gets better in the second half of my second trimester). But I'm just hoping a growing bump is the sign of a healthy baby and that's of course the most important thing.

LuxeBiscuit · 30/04/2024 19:15

@WickWood your bump is so cute!

On the topic of clothes. I've been thinking about trying to wear non-maternity tops and dresses for as long as possible. What is everyone else wearing?

I've just been zipping trousers as far as they'll go but I can't do the buttons on any of them lol. I think I'll need to get maternity jeans and leggings soon.
