I love the idea of using the pool but was told very early I might need an elective section, so waiting to see how things are looking at my growth scans before really thinking about any options. All my movement feels really low so I think he might be breech, and if he is he won't be able to be turned.

Thanks Ladies.

I'm going to ask about having a tour of the birthing centre and go from there.

@SarahB88 I have said the same re induction and wanting to go straight for a section if needed. The midwife I spoke to today said they wont write that in my notes untill my 32 week appointment but my husband knows my wishes and certainly with the other 3 he was brilliant at advocating for me if/when I wasnt able too ... he kind of had my birth plan on his phone / as notes for his reference so he could go back to things we had discussed prior to the births if he needed too.

We spoke quite abit about that at todays appointment as I'm very anxious about being apart from him and them just giving me whatever I say in the heat of the moment whereas he was always ... you said you didnt want x so why not wait an hour and see how you feel and I do believe (apart from middle child when he passed out and missed the entire thing and had more medical staff dealing with him than I had) he was the reasoni laboured & recovered as I did

SarahB88 · 15/02/2024 15:13

@MrsB2005 just be insistent with getting in your notes as quickly as you can at the next appointment. I think I was really lucky in that as soon as I said it my midwife agreed. She said she wouldn’t actively advocate for women not to have an induction but she is very supportive of trying to allow women to have the most natural birth possible without interventions of induction and sections.

Ive made sure my partner knows my wishes as well in case anything does happen and he needs to advocate for me like yours did. I think there’s a lot to be said about the power of good birthing partners!

Clarkey34 · 15/02/2024 15:39

I've read about a lot of people not wanting inductions. As a first time mum, I'm baffled as to why, can I ask the reasons behind this please?

Thank you 🙂

Nina7 · 15/02/2024 18:08

@MrsB2005 , as mentioned before, the most important is to choose a place that makes you feel secure and confident.

I would like to consider a home birth but as it's the first time, I'll choose the safety of the hospital. I feel lucky because the midwife led unit is in the same building as the central delivery suite, so if there is any emergency they'll be able to move me there pretty quickly.

@Clarkey34 I've listened to "hypnobirthing" by Siobhan Miller and "give birth like a feminist" by milli hill (I've also heard that "the positive birth book" by milli hill is a must read) and even though I don't remember the exact statistics it looks like induction can very often be a bit "too intense" for the body, it kind of kicks you off balance and your body's rhythm can't follow the chemically induced contractions. This can make the situation more painful that it'd normally be and also your body's efforts to "push" will be much less efficient. The statistics show that if you have an induction you're more likely to need pain relief and more likely to get a cascade of interventions (forceps, ventouse, episiotomy and c section).
There is also a lot written about inductions being given that might not be necessarily needed (if all other factors show that the baby is still ok and growing, the placenta working fine etc) and are only recommended based on dates.

I think it's very good to learn as much as possible about birth from now, so that anything that comes up closer to the birth doesn't shock us and we can take calm, informed decisions for whatever situations we have to face.

I'm very interested in all these stories of women that experienced birth as something not painful, even pleasant, orgasmic! If you have any good book/video recommendations, please share!

SarahB88 · 15/02/2024 18:43

@Clarkey34 I have said no to induction for the reasons that @Nina7 has mentioned but also because I know too many people that have had horrific induction experiences that have led to either a forceps birth causing damage and tears that may not necessarily have happened and also emergency c section for some other people.

I only know one person who had a good induction experience and whilst this is just personal experience, it is all at the same hospital that I would be due to give birth at. That’s another reason I’ve chosen to go with the midwife led unit rather than the hospital.

PeppedUp · 15/02/2024 22:05

@Clarkey34 I think they can lead to more intense contractions and are linked with more interventions, including C-sections.

I’m not opposed to pain relief or instrumental delivery as I had both with my son and didn’t have a bad experience so for me those wouldn’t be much of a concern.

I guess it’s up to the individual about whether you want to risk an intense labour in an effort to avoid a C-section or if you’d rather go for a planned C-section in order to avoid the risk of an emergency one. Or you can just wait until the baby comes in its own time, which comes with some extra risks as well.

SarahB88 · 17/02/2024 15:27

We picked up our pram, car seat and next to me crib today so that’s now everything that we would need for her arrival in the house ready and waiting! Cot bed and changing station will be built once the joiners been to put the fitted wardrobes in her room.

We’ve been remortgaging as well and I was worried that the house might have dropped in value with all the cost of living crisis and recession news. Thankfully it’s stayed the same so mortgage is a go now! I can finally get my ex bought out so the house will properly belong to my partner as well as me before baby comes which is another thing off my mind!

I’ve been having a lot of pain today though so I’m currently sitting on my ball. I think it may be PGP but unsure what that really feels like. I have my midwife this week or next so will ask and see what she says. I was really hoping to avoid it 😩

ClrDvs · 18/02/2024 21:19

Hello ladies - hope you're all doing ok. Sounds like a few of you have an awful lot going on, so sending you positive vibes your way xx

I've been having hip and back pain recently so I saw a physio who said it's PGP. I feel I was a bit naieve about how early things would start to hurt 😞. The physio said if you have a history of back/hip issues you're more likely to get it, which sadly so many of us do. I did pregnancy yoga this evening with a birthing ball and it was so, so good, definitely recommend to anyone who's experiencing pain.

Glucose test tomorrow, which I'm dreading...

Does anyone have any recommendations for help with insomnia? Aside from pregnancy pillows.

Xx

Colourfulflowers · 18/02/2024 21:55

Hey everyone 🌷

So much going on for us all, hope everyone is getting on ok! I have to consciously keep reminding myself that I’m doing just fine and letting go of this idea of everything being ‘perfect’ in my head!

Mostly I feel like I’m soooooo tired all the time, and have been experiencing dizziness and shortness of breath. I went to the hospital to get checked and they said everything was fine. Has anyone else experienced this? I have my midwife app tomorrow so will speak to her about it too.
Also just generally feeling heavy, stretched, uncomfortable!!! I fell so much bigger than I look!

@ClrDvs I’ve been having insomnia too. Sometimes I find getting out of bed and sitting upright on the sofa for a little while helps (and also doing some gentle stretches too if I’m uncomfortable), then I go back to bed and usually fall sleep. I also use a pillow mist sometimes too. Hope yours eases for you 🌼

Mum2b2024 · 18/02/2024 22:39

Hi, probably a stupid question but I know it is advised to not use a second hand mattress (so would buy a new one anyway) but what about a second hand mattress protector and fitted sheets? Would be from a friend anyway. Feel can't find any advice online and keeps saying about the bloody mattress lol. Thanks.

Toda11 · 19/02/2024 08:40

Had our 28 week growth scan yesterday and all went well! Head was a day behind, abdomen a week ahead and legs a week and 2 days ahead but husband is 6ft5 so not unsurprising!

Whilst he was finishing the panelling and painting in the nursery I treated myself for being in the third trimester to ordering the pushchair and car seat set!

MrsB2005 · 19/02/2024 11:45

@Mum2b2024 I would say if you feel comfortable with either second hand and they can be machine washed then it would be no different to second hand clothes etc.

Sa11yCinnamon · 19/02/2024 13:11

@ClrDvs I had my glucose test today too, was dreading it but it wasn't as bad as I expected?! I'll get a call today if I have GD, no news is good news. Fingers crossed for you too!

Sorry to hear about your pain, I've ordered a birthing ball too, not suffering badly at the moment but I fractured my hip last year and am worried it might get worse as I get bigger.

Also @Colourfulflowers I feel this SO MUCH!!! Also just generally feeling heavy, stretched, uncomfortable!!! I fell so much bigger than I look!

What did they do at your glucose test for those of you that have had it. All they did was take fasting bloods and a hba1c and then I could eat. I said I was expecting to do the whole drink thing and wait 2 hours etc but they said they don’t do that anymore 🤷🏼‍♀️ To be fair they were only doing it due to my age so I’m not concerned but just wondered how much it varies everywhere else

Sa11yCinnamon · 19/02/2024 16:14

@Emmacb82 I had blood taken first thing (fasted), drank the glucose drink, waited two hours and had more blood taken.

Just checked Badger notes and results are normal 😊

OP posts:
Emmacb82 · 19/02/2024 16:30

Thanks, I got the feeling that they didn’t really want to do it for whatever reason. But I kind of wish they had done the proper one being that I bothered to fast. Just so varied as to what care you get when it should all be one protocol. As a nurse it drives me insane!

ClrDvs · 19/02/2024 20:48

@Sa11yCinnamon I was also dreading it, it was ok. I'd not rush to do it again 😅.

Also thank you to the lady that offered the insomnia advice. I can't find your post again to tag you 😅 sorry, but I'll give it a go. I hope your sleep improves ❤️.

@Colourfulflowers heavy, stretched and uncomfortable is exactly it. Again, I was naieve to think it would be a while before feeling this way!

Has anyone had an appointment with the "High Risk Obstetric Anaesthetic Clinic"?

I've had a letter through with an appointment but I've not been told I'm high risk and also have NO idea what this is for, so I'm very confused...

junebuglb · 21/02/2024 10:36

Hiya! Hope everyone is doing well :) Wondering if anyone might be able to relate.

At my 25wk midwife appt I was told that baby was lying “diagonally” across my bump, head towards the cervix, her bottom to one side, and feet towards the other, essentially kind of transverse. This made lots of sense to me as most mornings I notice my bump is looking rather wonky and I’m mostly feeling kicks on one side, below my belly button.

Since then I have had a 4D scan at 27 weeks and she was in the same position again.

Having had a little check in with baby first thing in the morning for the past few weeks this seems to be where she is always lying, and I notice that I don’t think I’ve ever felt kicks high enough to be up at my ribs (nearly 28 weeks now)

My bump also often tends to have a bit of a “shelf” and sort of dips in just below my ribs when I’m lay flat on my back, I assume this is because baby is just chilling out at the bottom.

I guess I’m just wondering if anyone else can relate at all or if I just have a bonkers baby! 😂 I know there’s plenty of time for her to move, but I’m wondering are others feeling kicks much higher up etc? I’m using my birthing ball most evenings and am booked in for some yoga next month.

Sa11yCinnamon · 21/02/2024 10:41

My movement all feels really low, below my belly button, which is making me wonder if he's breech? I mentioned this to my mum and sister at the weekend and they both said it's far too early to worry (I'm 27 weeks) and there's loads of time for him to move - I wasn't really worried, more just making an observation. I have my first growth scan a week today so guess I'll find out then!

OP posts:
Toda11 · 21/02/2024 10:46

My baby is currently in breech frank which is the most common breech position from when I did reading. She has been in that position at both my 24 and 28 week scans.
Plenty of time to turn though! About a quarter of babies are breech at 28 weeks and only 5% at 32 weeks so the next scan will be interesting to see.

ClrDvs · 21/02/2024 10:49

@junebuglb I have been feeling kicks and seeing movement higher up, but only very recently perhaps the last week or so (26+2).

Colourfulflowers · 21/02/2024 11:12

Most of the movements I’ve felt have been beneath my belly button (although I have less often had some movement on the sides and a bit higher up above my belly button too).

My bump appears to be coming out at the sides quite a bit which wasn’t what I had expected! So I mentioned this to the midwife and she just said everyone’s bump and baby will be different and nothing to worry about!

Oh interesting! Ok that’s great to know, thankyou everyone (first timer over here, can you tell)

It’s just fascinating to try and work out what is happening where. Sometimes I will get a bulge to one side which I can only assume might be a head or a bottom!

It’s not painful, but sometimes she will shift into a position that feels notably “weird”. Perhaps she’s just still little enough to squeeze into some awkward places and this will pass as she grows. There is definitely plenty of time for baby to move yet, thanks for indulging my curiosity!!
