8 weeks- line on test fainter

Mh0509 · 12/01/2024 22:13

Hi, i am 8 weeks pregnant and took another test this morning, and my positive line was fainter than it was 2/3 weeks ago. I took another test this evening, and the same positive line but fainter than it has been in previous weeks.
No bleeding at all.
I have my first appointment with midwife on Thursday, so not much I can do really until then. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what the outcome was?
Reading online it appears as though it may be miscarriage.

I'm sorry you're worried.
Why did you take the test?

Mh0509 · 12/01/2024 22:17

I’ve been doing the mom med ones. It was a multipack with ovulation and pregnancy tests so used the same brand throughout.
I used clear blue on the first positive of mom med which also confirmed pregnancy

But what prompted you to test again at 8 weeks?

Mh0509 · 12/01/2024 22:19

sorry I misread your first message. Just first time pregnancy and doesn’t seem real until Hospital appointment so randomly tested again!

You're just stressing yourself out which is totally normal with pregnancy especially first one. Your levels aren't consistent all day every day! I bet your first BFP was FMU? More concentrated. Until told otherwise you are pregnant. Be excited and relax and just enjoy it. Anything else is a worry you don't need. 💐

Mh0509 · 12/01/2024 22:28

Thank you! I know I’m just being a stress head and should just wait and see what happens

I know it's worrying when you're pregnant, but if you haven't experienced a loss of symptoms, there is not likely to be anything wrong.

And testing doesn't change the outcome. I know you know that, and that it's hard to believe that all is well, but try not to stress and test all the time.

Have you read about the hook effect? I’d never heard of it before I came on here but it might reassure you some x

Mh0509 · 12/01/2024 23:06

Yes I did read about it, which is why I took another test later in the day. But still not as strong a line as in previous weeks.
Will try not to worry and hope I get some answers on Thursday

Are you being scanned then?

I mean, your midwife won't routinely scan you at your first appt.

Mh0509 · 12/01/2024 23:54

I would assume not, as like you said they wouldn’t on first appointment. But I can raise my concerns and see what they say?

Yes, you can, and hopefully she'll reassure you.
I wish you all the best. It's horrible to be worried.

@Mh0509 try adding water to your urine I think the ratio is 50/50. Doesn’t matter if you do a test in the morning or evening hcg is still too high.

This happened with dc2, I mixed my urine with water and the line was dark again..defo sounds like hook effect x

Mama2be29 · 15/03/2024 05:02

hi mums,

new user here. I’m 5+5 and my pregnancy tests are getting lighter and symptoms are definitely decreasing however I get random spikes during the day when I feel very pregnant then they fade to almost nothing. Added a pick of my pregnancy tests. I had a dye stealer 2 days ago but nothing as strong since then (3rd test from the top in the pic). Should I get checked out?

TIA for your support

ps. Tests at the bottom are the most recent

So I did a test from the same urine sample but the top test in the picture was dipped in a sample that was diluted in water and the bottom one was just a neat sample (undiluted). Is this the hook effect? They still both look fainter though 🥴

Mine was the hook effect. I think even with diluting it didn’t come up as dark as it had done. I’m now 17 weeks pregnant.
Haven’t really had any symptoms so was very paranoid, but happy when my 12 week scan showed a healthy little baby.

It’s hard to listen to other people when they say the tests detect pregnancy and not determining how far you are along…. But please try and do as it’s unnecessary stress with the constant testing. I admit I tested too much as I couldn’t quite believe it was real!

Hi ladies, just need some guidance I’m besides myself. We had ivf in February with our little frostie and found out at the beginning of March I was pregnant! I’m now around 8 and a bit weeks pregnant, I have had 2 scans one where I saw the baby’s heart beat and another where I heard the baby’s heart beat, for some unknown reason today I found a pregnancy test and used it because I thought why not…? The test then came up super faint! I mean super faint like it would if it was an early positive. So me being me went out and got ANOTHER test and it was still the same extremely faint! I’ve done tests beforehand to obviously confirm this pregnancy and they was so dark, so I’m not sure now why they’re really light. I’m so upset as I’ve experienced a missed miscarriage before and I hope this isn’t the case again! I’ve been to EPU and they have just done a test also and it’s positive, but they won’t do no more they’ve just advised me to get a private scan. I’m so anxious and worried I feel like history is repeating its self.

Please don’t panic like I did!
my tests were lighter. Even when diluting with water it got slightly darker but still not to the same extent as it had been.
Tomorrow is my 20 week scan and so far everything has gone fine with my pregnancy.

I honestly understand your worry and panic, but as many people said to me, a pregnancy test just shows that you are pregnant and doesn’t dictate how far along in pregnancy you are. A positive test is a positive test xx

Thank you for your reply! But I just can’t get my head around it! I took a test last week some time and it was normal completely dark, took two yesterday and the line on them is extremely faint like it would in early pregnancy. I just feel like I’m going to have another miscarriage but this time I made it to 8and a half weeks x

XxXLGXxX · 10/01/2026 16:13

Could this be an hook effect or is it far too different? I should be 8week bottom test, these are the difference it's gone so much lighter and I'm worried

If you’re anxious you can book either a private scan or ask for an early scan

Mine was the hook effect! I now have a one and a half year old running around the house like a mad woman. Try to not worry so much like I did!
But as someone else said if you are concerned for any other reasons book a private scan to put your mind at rest

My other half is right against private scans now because they got our gender wrong with our little boy so we always said we would never attend those places anymore
