Is it worth mentioning at my first antenatal appointment if I suspect I could be carrying twins?

So I have my first antenatal appointment later today (this is my 4th pregnancy). I had a very early very positive pregnancy test, pregnancy symptom around a week after conception (before I tested), a few odd symptoms I didn't have in my previous pregnancies (implantation spotting, mild uterine cramps, ...) and a strong gut feeling about it. I know you can't know for sure until you have a scan, but is this something worth mentioning or not?

Thanks for your advice xx

I think they'd just say to wait for the scan tbh.

SouthLondonMum22 · 29/12/2023 13:51

I wouldn't say anything because they aren't going to do anything based on a few symptoms which may just be because it's a different pregnancy and a gut feeling.

I am having twins and had no clue at all until my 12 week scan. Pregnancy has been very similar to my DS so far.

rainydaysandwednesdays · 29/12/2023 13:51

Did you possibly ovulate earlier than you thought?

I don't think twins are classed as a risk so guess they wouldn't scan you until they usually would.

caringcarer · 29/12/2023 13:52

Any twins in the family?

Daisies12 · 29/12/2023 13:53

but what will they do? Just wait for your 12 week scan. And lots of women have different pregnancy symptoms each time

theduchessofspork · 29/12/2023 13:53

If you want.

They will just wait

PiggieWig · 29/12/2023 13:55

No harm in mentioning it

Mills86 · 29/12/2023 13:59

I got a positive test over a week before my period was due. A gut feeling prompted me to do one and I also had a gut feeling it was twins.

It wasn’t.

TomatoSandwiches · 29/12/2023 14:00

They won't scan you earlier because you think it may be twins and I'm not aware of any different advice you would have before your dating scan.
Just make sure you take your folic acid ans prenatal vitamins, if there are two then the risk for complications is higher, do what you can to reduce that.
Good luck.

Panicmode1 · 29/12/2023 14:10

I was absolutely convinced that my 4th pregnancy was twins (we have twins in the wider family) - but it wasn't. I just had to wait for my first scan - there's not much they can do until then.

Plumful · 29/12/2023 14:11

You’ll find out at your scan.

Whentwobecomesthree · 29/12/2023 14:11

I knew I was having twins (private scan) before my first appointment. I told them. They said 'that's nice' etc but that they don't do anything until after the 12 week scan anyway. It literally changed nothing.

peppapigpeppa · 29/12/2023 14:16

What would be the point ? It wouldnt change how you're managed, the first appointment is just a load of form filling. I don't think any of the things you've mentioned are linked to twins, every pregnancy has different symptoms. Say if if you want but the midwife will probably just nod & smile

ActDottie · 29/12/2023 14:52

Mention it but I doubt they’ll do anything based on what you’ve said.

If you can’t wait until 12 weeks can then book a private scan in to find out.

Santaisscouringindeedfornewjob · 29/12/2023 15:02

Beware an eye roll if you say anything..

starsinthenightskies · 29/12/2023 15:06

You could mention it but they won’t do anything differently. If they offered earlier scans etc then everyone would start saying they suspected twins.

Please come back and update though if it is twins! Apparently there is research showing that “gut feelings” of the mother in pregnancy are surprisingly accurate.

PickledScrump · 29/12/2023 16:16

Sounds like you may have ovulated earlier than you thought rather than twins. As many others have said it quite common for people to have a gut feeling of twins only to find out it’s actually not.

Santapaws3 · 29/12/2023 16:16

They probably hear it all the time so I doubt they’d say anything except inwardly eye roll. You could book an early scan if you’re really curious?

Garman · 29/12/2023 16:17

What would be the point? Care in the first trimester is the same anyway even if you are having twins.

DeedlessIndeed · 29/12/2023 16:21

Congrats OP! My 12 week scan was today.

I thought I was having twins. I had a LOT of period-like cramps, twins run in my family, I feel that I have quite a bump already at 12 weeks and such a strong gut feeling I'd have put money on it.

Turns out I have one, healthy, very chilled out baby - and I'm over the moon!

Personally I don't think it'd make much difference either way. I also think that gut feelings probably aren't much to go by and your other symptoms are quite normal.

PingPowKaPowWow · 29/12/2023 16:24

You can take out insurance in case you have twins. Might be worth looking into.

thefallen · 29/12/2023 16:42

What would they do differently?

Never heard of this.. is this the UK?

Beginningless · 29/12/2023 16:45

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I had a gut feeling about twins too, and actually when I got to my 12wk scan they saw another sac and thought that there had probably been a twin early on who had not survived.
