This is my birth story for anyone who would like to know. What a wild 10 days I’ve had.

36+6 Antenatal Consultant Appt - Agreed IOL at 37+3 due to baby estimating to be 9lb 6oz. However, appeared with asymptomatic symptoms of pre eclampsia, spent 7hrs in triage and discharged with a plan to attend DAU for BP checks.

37 weeks exactly- DAU attendance again asymptomatic high BP medicated with Labetalol and admitted for monitoring. Overnight offered to bring IOL forward at 2AM however declined as I wanted DH support.

37+1 - Discharged from ward as BP was being managed with medication and IOL was only 48hrs away.

37+2 - Attended DAU for bloods and BP check. High BP and also protein in urine. Self discharged from Triage as they wanted to admit me again to monitor BP and start IOL however they were later paused due to busyness of the delivery suite so I did the right thing.

37+3 - IOL @ 11AM. Pessary inserted at 1300hrs and was already 1cm dilated and also had a stretch and sweep. Cervix was favourable. Did lots of laps of the hospital and kept busy. Overnight I had intense pressure and period like cramping. Codeine and Paracetamol were taken.

37+4 - Cramps had stopped by midday. Pessary removed and was 2cm dilated and had another stretch and sweep with gas and air. Lost mucus plug. Lots of walking and got told my waters could be broke so I would be making my way to delivery suite.

37+5 - Still waiting for bed on delivery suite. Lost more of my mucus plug. Another stretch and sweep and was now 3cm dilated. Moved into side room and was told I was 1st in line for a bed when it was available. Throughout my stay my BP remained high and was medicated.

37+6 - Finally moved to delivery suite in the early hours of the morning. Requested an epidural before waters being broke which was actioned straightaway. UTI was also discovered.

Progressed nicely and by 12AM at 38 weeks exactly I was fully dilated however my epidural had failed. I could feel everything and was in significant pain. I was ready to push and had some direction from the midwife however I was exhausted and could not handle the pain.

Delirious and extremely in pain it was agreed that I would need a forceps delivery. I agreed to a medical trial of being given a spinal block 3x more powerful than an epidural in theatre and a forceps delivery which needed to happen there and then. I had 3 pushes to get baby out.

Baby Jennings came out after one push and placed immediately on my chest. I had an Episiotomy however given the nature of however traumatic my birth was I had no real idea what was going on. Baby was extremely healthy and born at 04:30AM weighing 8lb 10oz.

I have since been diagnosed with acute kidney injury due to the effects of the hypertension in my pregnancy and also lost 800ml of blood and now have a low blood count. I’m currently drugged up to the eyeballs and slowing taking each day as it comes. We finally got discharged on 23rd December.

I don’t think I’ll be rushing back to have DC2 however I can’t believe my little girl is here and is perfectly healthy.

Mummyme87 · 26/12/2023 05:06

Congratulations @Mushroo om the birth of your Christmas baby. Hope you’ve had an okay night and get home today

Luhou · 26/12/2023 07:52

@MrsJ6921 I hope you're recovering well now and enjoying being home. I had some very similar experiences with my first DD.

Here I am nearly 37 weeks with number 2! It took me until she was 2 to even contemplate the idea though.

Lilothblos · 26/12/2023 08:07

@MrsJ6921 sorry to hear things didn’t go to plan, sounds like you had a rough time of it. Glad your little girl is doing well and hope you’re getting some good recovery time.

@MrsJ6921 thank you for sharing. You are a trooper! Glad your little one is doing well and hopefully you'll be back to normal soon. Your body has been through a lot

Vikki7 · 26/12/2023 16:54

I'm having some signs that labour may be imminent 😳😁

My daughter who would love to be with me for our home birth has had a fever since last night. I promised her since the 12 week scan that she could be with me for birth.

It's not safe for her to be around if things progress now is it? 😕

Hummusanddipdip · 26/12/2023 18:42

Good luck @Vikki7

No idea advice wise on your daughter having a fever, but it's not something you can really control ultimately, hopefully she isn't feeling unwell.

Dannic2018 · 26/12/2023 22:14

Congratulations @Mushroo ❤️

aw @MrsJ6921 bless you that sounds traumatic, I hope you’re ok and being looked after. Congratulations on your little girl

LittleAlien24 · 26/12/2023 22:28

Congratulations @Mushroo

I've the nonstress test in the morning and then ob appointment. Had a chat with hubby and both decided if baby's ok then we won't agree to earlier csection just because my ob is nervous.
Have hospital bag packed for me and the baby, just need to pack a bag for hubby because luckily here he can stay 24/7 in hospital with me

Mummyme87 · 27/12/2023 06:25

@MrsJ6921 congratulations on the birth of your baby. Hope you’re recovering well ❤️ your AKI will self resolve, it’s not uncommon to happen for various reasons and hope your BP is behaving! Rest up, lots of baby cuddles and be kind to yourself

sashastuck · 27/12/2023 11:58

@MrsJ6921 you’re a strong woman! Take care of yourself as much as you can at this time. ❤️

My induction is now on the 1st Jan, eek!

Sunriseandcoffee · 27/12/2023 12:21

Congratulations on your Christmas Day arrival, @Mushroo.

Also congratulations to @MrsJ6921 l. Your birth journey sounded incredibly traumatic in parts but I'm so happy your little one is now safely in your arms.

Eeeek NYD induction. So excitingggg.

Mummyme87 · 27/12/2023 12:55

@sashastuck so soon now! That’s exciting. What was the reason for earlier induction in the end?

sashastuck · 27/12/2023 15:14

@Mummyme87 they offered 40+0 originally but I asked for a couple of days before because I don’t want him to be ‘late’ after being told his size and not knowing if I’ve got GD (they said it’s too late for me to even do monitoring at home!) But today I saw a different consultant who was like “you know you can have IOL any day from now right?” So we decided to bring it forward just by a day so that he’ll defo be here by due date (4th)! Really would like to go into spontaneous labour but don’t think I will x

Mummyme87 · 27/12/2023 16:13

@sashastuck yeah spontaneous is definitely the way forward, you never know!!

Redpanda21 · 27/12/2023 16:32

So I’ve got GD. Had to do a 3 day blood sugar monitoring following baby being over the 90th centile after a growth scan and I’ve now had 3 high readings.

FirstT1meMum · 27/12/2023 16:49

Just wondering if anyone has any advice from previous DC. Our DD is now 6 days old and we are fairly certain she is constipated as hasn't had a dirty nappy since Monday night and is so unsettled and seems to be hurting 😕 We are exclusively breast feeding. We spoke to the Dr's this afternoon who said it can be normal to not open her bowels everyday but we could try some water. We have been doing tummy massage and leg stretches but nothing seems to help.
We are going to give the water a go but does anyone have any experience if this works or any other tried and tested methods? Thank you from one seriously stressed out, emotional mummy 🥺

Redpanda21 · 27/12/2023 17:44

@FirstT1meMum i was told not to give boob fed babies water. Just keep yourself hydrated.

Have you given baby a bath yet? I would try that and let baby have a little soak and tummy massage.

My youngest would frequently poop when having a bathe.

FirstT1meMum · 27/12/2023 18:11

@Redpanda21 oh right, I was skeptical.

We've just taken her out the bath, possibly didn't have it warm enough to do anything as anxiety took over haha. She seems much more settled though since the bath

Hummusanddipdip · 27/12/2023 19:03

With the leg stretches are you bicycling her legs and also bending her knees and pushing her legs up towards her chest?

When I went to the barnardos center with ds we were shows a few rhymes, one of the ones that stuck with me was the grand old duke of york, basically you sing that and march their legs to the song, then when they're up down or halfway up you push their legs together upwards, hold in the middle and then straight. I've explained that really badly

But this baby yoga video sort of shows you

FirstT1meMum · 27/12/2023 19:22

@Hummusanddipdip DH is much better at it than me tbh!

Thank you will give that a try!

Bims2019 · 27/12/2023 22:00

@FirstT1meMum our daughter is now 9 days old and after a couple of initial poos we had this same thing last week! Like you I was also panicking as a first time mum, the midwife didn't seem too concerned though and said it can take a while for them to adjust. We (mainly DH) did some of the exercises mentioned above and after a couple of days she did go. I know it's stressful though!
