Baby's first outfit/ what did you bring your baby home in?

Hi All,

So I'm due with baby number one in December and still haven't bought baby's first outfit yet/outfit to bring them home in.

Has anyone else already bought their baby's first outfit? If so, photos and links are welcome!

Alternatively, does anyone who had a winter baby mind sharing what outfit they brought their babies home in?

TIA X

Due in May and DH is adamant baby will be coming home in a Tottenham kit 😂

DD came home in a tiny white smocked dress with white cardigan. DS1 wore a white romper suit and white jacket. DS2 white romper with navy trim and a white pram suit with navy as it was winter. I like traditional clothes on babies. At home they all wore long cotton nighties for first 4-5 weeks. I only dressed them up if I took them out.

All three wore a nice clean white babygrow. DC1 had a picture of Winnie The Pooh on but the other DC were too big to get into it.

Winter born DC also had a white Pom Pom knitted hat, booties and cardigan and all three were covered in a new blanket that had been knitted for them by a friend.

One of the white newborn sleepsuits I got in a multipack from next. I took two different sizes because I didn't know how long/wide he was going to be!

The special thing we had was a baby blanket knitted for me 34 years ago that we put over him to keep warm on the journey home.

A white Boden vest, sleepsuit & matching hat, with embroidered ducks; a gift from great-grandma.

My DD was born in Feb. She came home in a cute little pink baby grow with matching hat, cosy blanket and a warm hat for going out in the cold to the car.

1 was in a sleep suit from John Lewis, 2 in one from Joules (got it in the sale!). The Joules one was snug though - DS was a wee tank.

We left the hospital after a week at 1am! He had a vest, babygrow and a snowsuit over the top, it was freezing.

niclw · 09/11/2023 21:32

I had planned a nice little outfit but it didn't go to plan. The nurse removed the canula from my hand. I went straight to my bag and bled over all of the baby clothes. I ended up taking dc home in clothes donated to the hospital however i absolutely adored him in that outfit despite being nothing like I had planned.

angeltattoo · 09/11/2023 21:33

Mine was in a red onesie with dogs on it. I didn't want an outfit, just for her to be comfortable. It was still cute and adorable. From a 3-pack of 'tiny baby' baby grows. 2 years later I bought that year's similar set for my son to come home in and kept them both in their baby boxes.
The receptionist at the hospital was very confused as she wasn't in pink or blue so couldn't work out if she was a girl or a boy.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 09/11/2023 21:38

I took my baby home in a bear snow suit and only saw after that's really dangerous for the car seat straps. So it's better to have thinner layers and then a blanket etc over the top of the straps

Morecladding · 09/11/2023 21:41

My January baby had a knitted romper suit from Vertbaudet. If you buy anything from there size up. French sizing is tiny. With a blanket.

MonkeyPuddle · 09/11/2023 21:41

DD was a November baby. This was her on the way home. Vest, babygrow, cardi knitted by a friends mum, random hat off a set of clothes, blanket a friend made.

tealandteal · 09/11/2023 21:44

Both of mine were summer babies, so just a short sleeve vest and a sleepsuit. Plus hat. With both I looked over loads of vests and sleep suits to find the right one. DS1 had little grey hedgehogs on his hat and vest, with pale green woodland animals on his sleepsuit. It was beautiful, and it took me a long time to find something I love just as much for DS2, who had little mountains. I wanted something different from just white so that it was recognisable to me as their first outfit and I could keep it.

YorkshireIndie · 09/11/2023 21:46

Sleepsuit and vest both times (but different ones) and the same blanket which I am not letting either children have 😅

Ghostlight · 09/11/2023 21:57

My daughter came out smaller than I expected and I only had newborn size which was cute but massive.
The lady in the opposite bed had a little boy who pefectly fit his newborn outfit and she passed her 'just in case' tiny baby outfit over to me. It was white with little elephants on the chest. I was so grateful and hormonal I think I cried.

KnittedCardi · 09/11/2023 21:59

Nothing special... Just a standard babygrow with some sort of animal on it. Summer babies so just those. I think they were both Next. They spent their first couple of months just in vests, both born in very hot summers.

elliejjtiny · 09/11/2023 22:03

My moses basket was green and white so all my dc had different green and white outfits with matching hats. Dc1 had a green romper suit, dc2 and dc4 had those soft dungarees with feet from Mothercare that came with a matching vest and hat. Dc3 and dc5 wore baby grows. Dc2 and dc3 were winter/spring babies so they had green blankets as well. Dh took some nice photos of all of them in the Moses basket when they came home. I want to hang them all in the wall in a row but I still haven't done it yet and dc5 is 9 Blush.

namestuck · 09/11/2023 22:07

Honestly, I had packed the most beautiful outfits for coming home but actually when it came down to it, a baby grow / vest / blanket was the best option. I was so exhausted, overwhelmed, frazzled and desperate to leave the hospital something I thought was so important, wasn't at all!

DryRobeWanker · 09/11/2023 22:10

I didn't find out the sex with any of mine beforehand.
DC1 red babygro and navy cardigan, was supposed to be a white and yellow duck one but a poonami took that out in about 5 mins!
DC2 snoopy babygro and red cardigan
DC3 was supposed to wear a blue and yellow duck babygro but ended up being big and burst out of it like the hulk so just had white terry one and a red cardigan and hat
DC4 had a navy knitted romper which was quite impractical. Was told all the way through I'd have another big baby probably about 10lb so bought accordingly but actually was only 8lb 1 then was poorly and by the time we could leave was only 5lb 5. DH went to get a couple of things in small sizes and that and a pack of vests what he came back with.

DryRobeWanker · 09/11/2023 22:13

Posted that too soon.
This thread has made me nostalgic, all mine are now bigger than me and it's lovely to look back at those tiny clothes when I've got a hall full of gigantic trainers and doc martins!

BertieBotts · 09/11/2023 22:13

You should not put them in bulky clothing in the car seat as it makes the straps too loose so beware of this! Take a blanket to tuck over them. A normal outfit plus a cardigan is fine, just no pram suits etc.

I had a selection of colourful sleepsuits but the actual outfit ended up being random each time because I had used them all up already.

Apossum · 09/11/2023 22:14

Ah how exciting!
DS came home in my favourite of all the babygrows I’d bought him, a wee farm print one with sage green detail, a white cardigan knitted by my grandmother and a little white bobble hat knitted by my mother in law. The hat didn’t really fit on his big old head and the cardie had to be left undone, he was a bloody whopper 😂 i think we put a crocheted blanket over his lap too, that was made by my sister.
