Baby's first outfit/ what did you bring your baby home in?

Hi All,

So I'm due with baby number one in December and still haven't bought baby's first outfit yet/outfit to bring them home in.

Has anyone else already bought their baby's first outfit? If so, photos and links are welcome!

Alternatively, does anyone who had a winter baby mind sharing what outfit they brought their babies home in?

TIA X

I've no idea... Sorry to be "that poster", but I think I just packed a few cute babygros and I've no idea what baby was wearing by the time we were discharged, several nights and nappy changes later. I can imagine I might have been more interested in baby's first ever outfit, but even then we are talking a nice babygro rather than any kind of "outfit". It didn't occur to me about dressing up to come home, and I did not realise that was a thing!

Thanks everyone! It’s lovely reading everyone's responses!

In terms of sizing, what size did your NB wear? I've mostly purchased 0-3 months and a pack of three first size babygrows. I'm starting to wonder if I should have purchased some NB/more first size clothes?

White sleep suit from multi pack given to me at hospital as dd was unexpectedly small, clothing i had brought with me (standard newborn size) was too big

Apossum · 09/11/2023 22:47

DS went into 0-3 as he was 9lb9 and longggg. He never fitter into his first size stuff, luckily I had a feeling he’d be big so I only bought a couple of bits in that size.. and handed them to my sil who had a much neater sized baby 1 month later!!

gotomomo · 09/11/2023 22:48

If baby is small just go to/send someone too the supermarket. I headed to asda the day after dd was born to buy clothes in tiny baby size - dd caused a real stir, all the staff wanted to see her (was evening and quiet, got some freebies too!

December baby came home in a vest, baby grow, a knitted cardigan (by me) but actually was coat length as he was so small and a blanket on top.

DS1 came home in a plain white baby grow. Looked so cute. DS2 came home in the rather bright red and green baby grow that his just 2 year old had selected from Sainsbury when taken taken to buy a present and coming home outfit for his new baby brother by DH.
Didn't exactly suit DS2's scrunched up newborn face. But DS1 was so proud when he carried in the car seat to show everyone his new baby.

If you don't open packs of baby clothes you can always take them back and exchange.
If you are keen to wash before wearing (I did for DS1 but not 2) then maybe don't do them all.

For me first outfit was more important than going home outfit. Which was lucky because going home was a bit of an anticlimax after it took 10 hours from being told we were being discharged to actually leaving (At one point they even changed their mind as the pharmacy was closed and said we had to stay another night, but that's another story).

I think it's hard to beat a fresh white sleepsuit on a new baby. I bought a pack of four with a very small pattern on each and chose my 2 favourites from that. I don't want to look back at those photos and wonder what I was thinking!

I'd had a couple of growth scans and was told the baby could be big so most of the stuff I'd bought was first size/up to 1 month. He wasn't big at all! Newborn would have been ok too.

I think ultimately it's good to have a couple of options you like, maybe in different sizes. and not be too set on anything as you just don't know exactly how it's all going to work out - best laid plans and all!

A blue & white striped sleepsuit & a hand knitted cardigan, white hat & scratch mitts. I had gone in hospital in a rush so didn't have time to think about a special outfit, I was so glad to be going home I didn't really worry what either of us were wearing. I'd made my mind up I was going home, so got dressed & informed the midwife I was leaving.

mondaytosunday · 10/11/2023 02:07

Just a onesie and blanket with little knitted hat. I think my daughter's was second hand even!

Lizzieregina · 10/11/2023 02:59

DS came home in the souvenir vest from the doctor- “delivered with love by Dr A”

I had found a lovely Christian Dior outfit on clearance and he did a big meconium poop in it right when we were ready to go home. So little vest and nappy had to do!

MariaVT65 · 10/11/2023 03:31

Just a vest, sleepsuit and cardi. And a blanket to have on in the car. Traumatic birth and was absolutely exhausted, plus got discharged at night, was in no state just to get my baby changed into an outfit just to go home in.

JustOneMoreBiscuit55 · 10/11/2023 06:38

We knew we were having a boy and bought a gorgeous sleepsuit with a little bow tie and pretend braces attached (from Mamas and Papas) for his going home outfit. He had measured big on all his scans (I had lots of scans from 28 weeks for various reasons) so we were worried the newborn size we'd bought wouldn't fit but he came out smaller than expected and it actually ended up being way too big on him. He looked absolutely gorgeous in it though and it did feel like a special outfit, even though it drowned him 😂.

One word of advice though - I wouldn't recommend getting anything that fastens at the back. This sleepsuit did and it was very challenging to get on a newborn. If we have another, I will still get a nice outfit but will definitely think of the practicalities next time!

TheIsleOfTheLost · 10/11/2023 12:03

I did the same as @Unexpectedlysinglemum with baby1 and put him in a big fluffy suit in the car seat. Felt terrible when I found a few weeks later that you should never do that! It's not like they arrive with a manual. Second baby was smaller, so the lovely woodland pattern babygrow had to be saved for later and dp had to run to the supermarket, coming back with a basic pack of white babygrows.

BarnacleBeasley · 10/11/2023 12:08

We're due a December baby too. Surely this is an ideal opportunity to dress them up in an elf costume? I've got one with a green long-sleeved vest, little stripey red and whtie leggings and a matching hat. I definitely wouldn't get away with this sort of shit with my opinionated toddler. I also have a reindeer pramsuit, but I wouldn't put that on him in the car, just some blankets over the carseat.

Re sizing, first DC went straight into 0-3. He was average weight but quite long.

DD was a November baby. This was her on the way home. Vest, babygrow, cardi knitted by a friends mum, random hat off a set of clothes, blanket a friend made.

No advice but just wanted to say your baby is one of the cutest I’ve ever seen! Adorable!

whereaw · 10/11/2023 14:14

A baby grow that buttons and not something that needs to be pulled on over the head!

PickledScrump · 10/11/2023 15:41

honestly keep it simple. Babygrow, vest, cardi, hat, blanket is all you need. Don’t bother with outfits for the first 3 months. Thin layers for the car seat, no snowsuits, coats or chunky clothes.

Broodywuz · 10/11/2023 15:50

Congratulations, how exciting!
Honestly I wouldn't bother with a specific fancy outfit, baby being comfy and cosy is all that matters. Also you may well just get it on and they're sick all over it or something. Vest, babygrow and hat. You could have a cardigan handy in case it's really cold, although car seat blanket's are safer i think, these are good

Babygrow & knitted cardi for all my 3 DC. DS1 was the only one that fitted into his 'coming home' babygrow. DS2 and DD were both prem and tiny. Although we had some warning with DS2 so managed to buy tiny baby clothes. DD luckily got lots of tiny clothes brought in by family when they heard how tiny she is. And all 3 had a lovely chunky blanket for on top.

Baby's first outfit/ what did you bring your baby home in?
DappledThings · 10/11/2023 17:27

Whichever vest, sleepsuit, hat and cardigan were closest to hand. Plus blankets on top. A special going home outfit is yet another thing I've only heard of on MN.

PinkRoses1245 · 10/11/2023 17:32

I’m envious you have such a strong belief you’ll bring home a baby. I can’t let myself believe that until it happens.

Quitelikeacatslife · 10/11/2023 17:56

Babies just look best in babygros, so comfy for them , get a fancy blanket if you like, but I would say please take away some of the photo opportunity pressures on yourself. Your baby will be beautiful in a cheap white babygro, don't stress over instagram ideas etc . You have a long way of parenting to go, they don't need a photo with each month on a blanket or such other tosh .
