Is 28 too young to be a mum?

I've recently found out that I'm pregnant. My partner is 35 and will be 36 when the baby arrives, this will be his first child. I'm currently 27 but will be 28 by the time the baby's here. We both have good stable jobs and live together. Financially we're fine.

My mother was upset when I told her of my pregnancy, particularly as she said that she wanted me to start having children in my 30s and she thinks I'm "too young" now. She was in her 30s when she started childbearing. I was hoping to start having kids in my 30s and not my 20s but I guess these things happen. I don't think that 28 is as young as she is making out, is it?

At your age I had 4 op. Dm never judged at all.

Blimey! I was 23 with my first. It seemed perfectly normal to me, but perhaps it’s different these days as both my daughters were in their 30’s when they had their children.

Hatty65 · 28/10/2023 17:32

Crikey, she's clearly of my generation. I don't know anyone of our age who would think 28 was 'young' to have a child, to be honest.

I had my first one at 23, and wasn't considered particularly young. In fact, by the time I had my last baby at 35 my GP wrote 'geriatric gravida' on my notes!

CherryBlossom321 · 28/10/2023 17:33

The only appropriate response from your mother is joy and congratulations. Really unkind of her to say that to you.

I had my two at 24 and 28. I’m now 40 and have zero regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. Obviously it isn’t “too young”, you’ve been an adult for ten years!

OldTinHat · 28/10/2023 17:34

No! I had DC1 at 27 and DC2 at 28 from my second marriage! My first pregnancy, planned, was at 24 but I miscarried.

PercivalWolfrick2000 · 28/10/2023 17:34

Not to young at all! Congratulations!
I had mine at 19 and then 32! 28 would have been much better for me 😂😂

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 28/10/2023 17:34

No it’s fine. Your fertility’s declining every year it’s too late for some women in their 30’s.

ColdMornings · 28/10/2023 17:40

I’d tell her to stop interfering now, as her overbearing nature will likely really piss you off when your baby is here. Being close is lovely, thinking she gets a say in when you conceive is weird, controlling and just too much.

Congratulations. 💐

Daffodil18 · 28/10/2023 17:41

28 isn’t young to have a child. For all you know your fertility could decline in your 30s, so if you want more than one then 28 is a good age.

Hollyhead · 28/10/2023 17:41

I had my DC1 at 27. It is brilliant knowing that he'll be an adult by the time I'm 50. Given the right circumstances I think it's better to get child rearing over and done with as young as possible if you get a lucky hand to be able to do so.

Riverlee · 28/10/2023 17:42

Most of my friends were around 28 when they had their first. It was unusual in my circles to have your first over thirty.

Ggttl · 28/10/2023 17:42

People tend to have them a bit younger when they have an older partner. It is a pretty standard age to have a baby.

2jacqi · 28/10/2023 17:43

wow!! you are an elderly primigravida now!! never mind waiting till your 30's!! congratulations x

MariaVT65 · 28/10/2023 17:43

Ignore your mum Op. My mum also gives me stupid advice about kids.

28 is normal. I’m having my 2nd at 35 and i feel too old.

Anyflippingname · 28/10/2023 17:45

You're not too young. I wish I'd met my partner earlier (had first at 34). My best friend had hers at 28 and then her last at 38 and she says she found the pregnancies etc much easier when she was younger. For reference, we're both professionals in London where loads of my other mates are only having their first now in their late 30s.

Londontown12 · 28/10/2023 17:46

Biologically the younger you are the healthier the pregnancy and the quality of your eggs are better ! I think 28 is a perfect age !!

rockinginarockingchair · 28/10/2023 17:53

I was 16 & 19 when i had mine,
Their both adults now.
Its none of her bees wax your old enough to make your own choice.

Sunshineonlancs · 28/10/2023 17:53

It's fine! You're 28 not 18! Great age to become a mum as long as you're happy! Congratulations!

MyInduction · 28/10/2023 17:54

I turned 27 just before I gave birth so I was 26 for the majority of my pregnancy. I'd say under 25 is a young parent and late 30s is an older parent.

jlpth · 28/10/2023 17:55

I had ds at 27. Not sure what the problem is really. He's almost 18.

paradoxicalfrog · 28/10/2023 18:09

It's really is none of your mother's business.

I'd watch your mother once the baby is born. Sounds as though she has issues with boundaries and you might need to be firm with her if she starts interfering in how you parent the baby.

dressedforcomfort · 28/10/2023 18:18

Very normal and sensible age to have a child. Don't listen to DM.

avocadotofu · 28/10/2023 18:24

It's younger than anyone I know but I'd say the main consideration is whether YOU want a baby.

WithTheHatToMatch · 28/10/2023 18:29

I’d always imagined I’d be 30-ish when I started a family (my mum was early thirties when she had me and my sibling) …and none of my friends had a baby before about 34/35…but I had my first baby at 27 (partner was also a bit older) and it worked out well for us.

I don’t think it’s too young at all. It’s a perfect age.

AndyPandyismyhero · 28/10/2023 18:33

How dare your mum think that any response apart from ' how wonderful, I can't wait to be a grandmother, congratulations,' is in any way appropriate? It is not her job to tell you when SHE hoped you'd have your children. It's not as though you are a child yourself, you are an adult, in a steady relationship and with a home and income of your own. FWIW, I had my first at 27 and was considered a ' geriatric mother'. When my DM had me and my sister, it was more common to become a first time parent in your early 20', or even late teens.
This is not about your mum, it's not even about a bunch of strangers on the internet. It's about whether you and dp are happy about this baby and feel ready to become parents. And as long as you are, it's really nobody else's business, including your mum.
Congratulations on your pregnancy. 💐
