TWINS!!

Just found out today I'm pregnant with twins. I'm 7 weeks, 1 day pregnant. Can't believe it! We were going to wait until 12 weeks to tell our families but it's now even harder to keep a secret!

Any guesses if they are fraternal or identical? Sonographer said I'd have to wait till next scan to find out more details. I hope they both develop well!

Wow! Congratulations! ✨
Do they run in the family?

Sealover123 · 25/10/2023 14:22

Thank you! No history of twins in family. In fact the only factor which may have contributed is I am in my late 30s. We don't have children so really hoping these 2 grow healthily! 🙏🏻

Wow!!! Congratulations!!! How exciting x

Bells3032 · 25/10/2023 14:35

congrats. they look to be in the same sack so my guess is identical but i'm not a sonographer. my fraternal ones the black around them was completely separate

Sealover123 · 25/10/2023 14:42

@Silverfoxlady Thank you, we are both excited and hubby keeps suggesting cheesy twin names 😂

@Bells3032 Thanks, that's so interesting. She said it looked like there may be a membrane between them but was hard to say. But they are in the same gestational sac? So I will try to update this thread once I find out. How old are your twins now?

Sadly lost one (sorry don't mean to scare you but the other is nearly two)

This was mine at 7+3

LittleRedY0shi · 25/10/2023 14:45

Congratulations! I was 7 weeks when I found out too (they're 4 now!)

Just a piece of advice - if your twins are MCMA or MCDA then they're definitely identical, but if they're DCDA it doesn't necessarily mean they're fraternal. A third of same sex DCDA twins are identical and it's shocking the number of medical staff I've come across (including sonographers and midwives) that don't know that! The ONLY way they can accurately say they're fraternal based on just a scan is if the babies are opposite sex.

If they are DCDA, same sex and it's not obvious at birth whether or not they're identical, you can have them DNA tested by post (cheek swab) for about £100.

Sealover123 · 25/10/2023 14:52

@Bells3032 I'm so sorry for your loss 😪 I am very nervous about that possibility, it happened to my friend as well. The first trimester in particular is so worrying. We only had an early scan due to my ectopic history and I am just hoping they both develop well.

@LittleRedY0shi thanks for all that info! Very helpful. I will read that a couple times to remember it correctly - I clearly have no twin knowledge whatsoever! 😂

Looks like they could be identical. I have 10 year identical twins, found out at 8 weeks. Congratulations!!

SouthLondonMum22 · 25/10/2023 14:57

They look identical to me.

I'm expecting twins in April. They are DCDA and look like pp's scan above.

Congratulations! I just found out a few weeks ago at the 12 week scan so still in shock myself.

Twimum23 · 25/10/2023 15:01

@Sealover123 I had my first set of identical twin boys I n July but if a surprise but thought it would happen as I got a set on my side and their dad has 5 sets on his side

Redheadx · 25/10/2023 15:07

Oh my gosh! How lovely! We have our scan tonight 7 weeks 1 day and twins run in the family!

nopenotplaying · 25/10/2023 15:11

They will check for a membrane between them at your next scan and tell you if they have separate or share a placenta. That will help them to plan your care. Congratulations, mine are nearly 4 now and I still remember the shock! 💙❤️

Tilly18101 · 25/10/2023 15:22

Yours look like my scan which are MCDA (share a placenta but own sacs) so are identical (I.e egg split)

I think there’s a tiniest whisp of a membrane between them that I can see but they’ll check next scan, just so you know mine we labelled MCMA at my first two scans (10+2 & 11+2) as no membrane was visible, but they found it at 13+1! Thank goodness as MCMA is very high risk, so please don’t panic if they don’t find it at first / they’ll rescan you like they did me.

idnetical twins are totally random, having twins in the family bears no weight on you having identical twins / it’s a genetic default that occurs and they don’t know why but there’s higher chance if you’re older (I’m 36!) and consume a lot of diary apparently? DCDA (fraternal) can be passed down as a genetic trait that women hyper ovulate but it’s the women’s family that pass that down it’s nothing to do with the father :)

We didn’t find out until I was 10 weeks at my first scan, I’m now 25 and boy is it different to my singleton pregnancy but it’s finally feeling real that there’s two of them and I take each week as another milestone reached that they are growing away even though I feel I’ve no room left to stretch already.

Haha, none of us had twin knowledge at that stage, don't worry - you'll pick it up quickly!

MamaMeggie · 25/10/2023 19:26

Congratulations! I hope all goes well for you

I’m an identical twin, unfortunately not sure what we looked like on scan at that point but they do look rather close for space, especially when there seems to be enough for them to be apart.
Identical twins do oddly run in our family, though they say it’s not inherited, my midwife was in shock at how many run through my side and said “clearly the ability of eggs splitting is something your family carries, I’m surprised you’re not having twins” 😂
My mother has a set of identical twin brothers and a set of identical twin sisters and then had twins herself. They run further back than that also. We have 5 sets of identicals within 3 generations

Sealover123 · 03/11/2023 07:36

Thank you all for your messages on here, I have read each one and appreciate you sharing your experiences! 🙏🏻 We are both so excited and praying all goes well with my pregnancy.

Congratulations! I have twins and being a twin mummy is the hardest but best and most rewarding thing I've ever had the privilege of doing x

theveryhungrybum · 03/11/2023 12:59

Congratulations! I'm an ID twin and I have ID twins. I love the relationship I have with my sister, and my twins are super close too.

KMM87 · 03/11/2023 15:38

Congratulations!! I found out this week at an early scan I have two babies too. However, they were measuring 6 days apart so need a further scan to check on no.2 which is next Friday. I'm feeling worse by the day so taking that as a good sign 🤣

How are you feeling?! Has it sunk in yet?! I also have no twin knowledge 🤯 but the sonographer said mine were from two eggs/two sperm.

KezzaMucklowe · 03/11/2023 15:47

Congratulations. My twins are 13 now. Its been brilliant. Hard work but brilliant.

Twimum23 · 03/11/2023 16:00

@KMM87 i had identical twin boys in July if they sharing the placenta then they identical

AdoraBell · 03/11/2023 16:06

Double congratulations 🎉 I had twins. It’s fabulous despite being hard work the first few months.

Mine arrived at 35 weeks, so I suggest getting things ready early on.
