Had past complicated pregnancies and so going for an early scan to see if things are ok-what should one expect to see/hear at this point?

I have recently had a scan at 7w and 6 days. It was trans adbominal (not transvaginal thankfully!), and I could see the head, body and heartbeat. It squirmed around and was absolutely perfect for dates. Interestingly, the sonographer said that they don't like to listen to the heartbeat at this stage as the noise is too much for the baby when the baby is at such a crucial stage of development. (she could trace the heart beat instead).

She also checked my whole womb to make sure it was just one baby.

I really really hope your scan goes just as well.

hopefully a heartbeat, that would be great wouldn't it? the very best of luck to you.

I had a scan at around 7 weeks and you can't see much. You may if you are lucky see a little flashing dot, which is the heartbeat. But sometimes it is too early to see this. I had the scan done the normal way but I know some people have them done internally at this point, as I gather they can see more this way.

I was told to drink water etc before the scan.

Btw my little flashing dot is now a very active 12 week old little girl!

Good luck!

Hey MegaMindy!
you could see all that at that point?!Would listening to the heartbeat interrupt the developement or poss damage? How do they trace it?

it's a flashing dot, lala, it's lovely. lots of neuro things going on at that stage, i think that's why you're not supposed to use a doppler until 12 weeks.

MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 14:27

I was surprised actually, I was very nervous having had two miscarriages. I really didn't understand what she meant about not listening to the heartbeat, maybe that's something you could ask when you go for your scan?

The trace of the heart beat was on the screen.

It was nervewracking, I'm sure you'll be very nervous as well.

MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 14:27

my usual name is Belgo btw

Nervous being an understatement!Mind's going every direction. Cos my slight symtoms this time seem so very slight even more nervous, as with the miscarriage it was the same.

Ps. Are scans harmless really for youg babies to be? With my healthy preg I only just got my first scan/look around week 20 (was abroad before).

who knows? who ever knows? i had about six zillion scans with dd and she is perfect.

MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 14:47

I asked the sonographer if the scan itself was safe. She said yes it is safe.

lalaland1 · 09/03/2008 14:49

Do you know at what point the can see that all is as should be ie no abnormalties>

OP posts:
MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 14:54

At this stage, they are simply looking for a heart beat, and I think they measure the length.

The main 'anomalies' scan is at 20 weeks.

lalaland1 · 09/03/2008 14:57

Even if you've had past miscarriage?Or you reckon EPU will let you do earlier scan?

I have a scan booked for 12 weeks and 20 weeks (as well as the one at nearly 8 weeks). It varies with where you live as to what scans you are entitled to.

Aitch · 09/03/2008 15:52

belgo, BELGO! are you pg?!

MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 15:53

yes I am, nearly ten weeks and everything is fine so far

MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 15:54

it happened just two weeks after my last m/c

Aitch · 09/03/2008 15:54

oh how wonderful! congratulations! good luck for your scan.

Thank you-feel so worried still as my slight symptoms really come and go and at times feel non existant. So want this baby to be there and well!Trying to pretend as if all is well and that I should feel so lucky not barfing all over the place but at times the acting skills go out the window!
