@reememberly We’ve always had reflux-y babies so it won’t be a huge issue if this one is reflux or dairy intolerant, we’re very used to special milks and prescriptions!
The irony will be that DH has just started two weeks of milking shifts to help out a family friend so we’ve got loads of free milk available! (Obviously little one couldn’t have it anyways but it’s still funny in my tired state!)

@GreenAventurinee Glad to hear you’re doing so well with your recovery! I think mines been awful to confirm this is the last baby!

So his reweigh was positive, he has put on 60g in 2 days, so he will be reweighed again in 2 days and will hopefully have gained again.

I am going to carry on waking him every 2 hours to feed and encourage him to take both sides, even though it is exhausting!
I asked for him to be referred to the tongue tie clinic, I know the NHS waiting list can be long, but I will see how long and how his weight gain goes before deciding whether to go private or not cos it is expensive.

I hope everyone with slow gaining babies has some positive news, it is so stressful!

My c section incision has gone sore on one side today, so the midwife has done a swab to check for infection and hopefully it is just a stitch dissolving rather than anything sinister.

JoyApple · 12/11/2023 22:54

@Spareincoming what makes you think your little one has CMPA? What symptoms is baby showing?

I'm also wondering whether my 2 week old may have it. She's exclusively formula fed (Kendamil), developed spots on her face 3 days ago (so far on her face only). Poos seem fine. Very gassy but more than that, makes this strange throat clearing sound at night. She hiccups ALOT and health visitor thinks she has tounge tie but midwife confident she doesn't (we have an appointment with NHS tounge tie clinic in two weeks). She seems much more settled during the day than at night or maybe it just feels that way as only me doing caring at night? Whereas DH still on paternity leave so daytime is split between us. At night, especially after midnight, she only seems to settle whilst sleeping next to me on my pillow.

My previous DC was diagnosed with silent reflux and then later on multiple allergies. I'm not even sure who I should be going to for advice. Any thoughts on what you think it may be?

Spareincoming · 12/11/2023 23:03

@JoyApple I think I’ve said before we’re old pros with reflux so have been watching for the usual silent reflux starting of the hiccuping, the arching back, the acid smell combined with milk burps… but this time we’ve got really bad trapped wind, baby spends hours crying but curled up; there’s also what I thought was baby acne but now I’m questioning that as it is spreading under babies chin and behind ears.
Sorry this is gross but we’ve also got exploding, liquid poo nappies, we’ve never had a baby with nappies like these - all our formula fed babies tended to have peanut butter or paste like consistency nappies - these are like gravy, and not thick gravy! And the smell isn’t right either. Sorry, it’s unpleasant to write!

My little one lost weight after weigh as, like the rest of yours.m but possibly due to jaundice and a tongue tie. Seems to be improving so let's see.

Out of interest, have any of you got your babies to sleep in their cot? Mine just cried the second she's put down and is only settling if she sleeps on me.
Has anyone experienced the same?

Spareincoming · 12/11/2023 23:05

@JoyApple just reread your post after I pressed post and the throat clearing at night makes me think reflux. All the DC have done this, even the most mild sufferer.

foodislife1 · 12/11/2023 23:11

@JoyApple @Spareincoming
My first had reflux and CMPA also and signs were severe eczema bad wind and acidic burps/spit up.

Second one has bad gas but has also started to grunt a lot so think she may Also be suffering

Spareincoming · 12/11/2023 23:16

@foodislife1 we’ve not got the acidic burps or grunts this time, but both DH and I have said this one is different, they’re not quite right - just like their siblings, haha, but not the “not quite right” we’re used to!

WriMum22 · 13/11/2023 06:33

@foodislife1 We had this the first week we were home, she wouldn’t settle in her cot at night, we would get her to sleep in our arms but as soon as we put her down in the cot she would wake up. Myself and my husband had to break the night in half and do shifts staying awake holding her, those first few days were very hard. She’s now 13 days old and we’ve found that she’s loves having a soft blanket wrapped around her touching her face, so when we wrap her up and put her down, she instantly settles and goes to sleep, it’s working a treat and we only have to watch her for about 10 mins before she’s in enough of a deep sleep that we can move the blanket from her face and tuck it in safely, we then go to sleep ourselves.

Have you tried swaddling etc? Baby might just want some comfort as the cot may be too big for them, so they just need some safety if that makes sense.

foodislife1 · 13/11/2023 08:00

@WriMum22
Thanks for that - have tried swaddling but I'm
Wondering whether it's the reflux that's also an issue.
Shes 12 days old today so will Slowly start to transition her into the cot. Just like your little one she likes a big thick blanket to keep her cosy so will try putting her down in that then removing it for something more 'safe'

PinkPlantCase · 13/11/2023 08:50

@foodislife1 i don’t think it’s unusual tbh. Newborns aren’t particularly designed to sleep in a cot. They want to be close to us. Some get grumpier about us trying to put them in cots than others.

If you’re breastfeeding (sorry I’ve lost track of who’s doing what!) then looking into safe cosleeping guidance might help! With my first we found that he’d settle in a moses basket after and evening of cluster feeding but often wouldn’t settle in there after about 3am so we’d co-sleep for the rest of the night. All daytime naps were on me or dad.

Thack · 13/11/2023 11:22

Similar here (breastfed) where it's hit-or-miss for using the moses basket. There's a spell of cosleeping every night. I don't particularly like it at this young age but it's safer than me falling asleep while sat up with them and means I get some sleep!

Glad to hear of the weight gains coming in. These little ones do things in their own time for sure.

JoyApple · 13/11/2023 12:17

@foodislife1 Re cot, my previous DC was like this. She had severe "colic"; was diagnosed with silent reflux and later on multiple allergies. She refused to sleep unless it was either on me or next ti be.

With my current DC, she sleeps in crib at night but makes such loud clearing throat noises that I can't sleep and bring her into bed to put her next to me on my soft pillow, which stops the sounds & she settles. This is even though her crib is on an incline.

What formula was your first put on for CMPA?

@Spareincoming thanks, should I take her to GP to get medication for silent reflux or I'd this something that may get better naturally? Also, were your DCs checked for tounge tie?

Spareincoming · 13/11/2023 12:34

@JoyApple It may get better as she ages - reflux often disappears in the first year and improves with weaning but I think I’d see the Gp as it is painful for baby and I’d expect to be prescribed Gaviscon powder initially, which thickens everything and for some babies stops the pain, if not, you can expect omeprazole to be prescribed.
Gaviscon can cause constipation too but is easily managed with a mild laxative. I have no qualms about using any of these medications, I have seen their effectiveness in all my DC.

I hit the jackpot when I rang the GPs this morning, managed to get on the phone triage list for this morning and have just got off the phone with the best possible GP.

So glad I can drive now as we’re going in this afternoon as he thinks it’s the early stages of silent reflux so wants to see baby and he said he was likely to prescribe gaviscon which will thicken the nappy contents too.
We have had silent reflux babies before but don’t think we caught it so early so I’m happy to go along with the Gp. I know his wife from a previous babies baby group and one of their children had mild becoming severe CMPA so I think he’d be the one to say it was that over the reflux. Not that I think he knows that I know that, he is just a really good Dr who actually listens.

Another positive gain here. Baby girl is 5lb 13 oz now and over her birth weight at 2 weeks old.
Saw our health visitor for the first time today and she was great. Baby has a little thrush but other than that she was really pleased.

Baby’s wind is much better, but still not great. - seems like a lot of us have very windy babies! And she is taking 2-3 oz every 4 hours.

OH is back in work today (wfh) and I wanted to go for a walk but the weather sucks 😣.

Seems quiet on the baby front in here! Can’t wait to hear who is next 😊

foodislife1 · 13/11/2023 14:09

@JoyApple they have me Alimentum Similac.

foodislife1 · 13/11/2023 14:18

And I also tried Nutramingen I think.

Katiec1 · 13/11/2023 14:43

Hey everyone😊 how are all the pregnant ladies keeping. 39+4 today and I think I’m beyond fed up and over it at this stage 😩

Saturday night I woke with very very mild period cramps that were coming and going. I was really hoping it was something but nope, it went after about an hour. Then last night I woke to a very sharp period like cramp which started in my lower back then spread to my front, was enough for me to jump and up and focus on my breathing (I’ve had back labour on my first and it felt like the start of it) but still nothing 😩
has anyone else been feeling the same?

I’ve also noticed a small little bit of discharge the last couple of days and apologies if it’s tmi but it was off white and sticky (It wasn’t a huge amount either but enough for me to notice it was there)
Again has anyone noticed similar?

hope all the new mums and babies are doing well 😊

Mrsrobinsonx · 13/11/2023 15:09

@Katiec1 we have the same due date 👶🏼
I’m really similar position as you tbh, I had some braxton hicks Saturday night and I’ve been having the off white stringy discharge for a few weeks now but other than that no signs at all!
I see the midwife tomorrow I think she’s going to offer a sweep and book induction for 41 weeks so at least there’s something to focus on 😂 x

Katiec1 · 13/11/2023 16:13

@Mrsrobinsonx its definitely something to focus on 😊 I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one so who’s got similar things going on. I’m just so impatient 😂I’m with midwife too tomorrow so I’m hoping she’ll offer a sweep too or at least get me to come back in a few days for one! Fingers crossed for us both 🤞🏼x

LilmissCa · 13/11/2023 17:31

@Katiec1 @Mrsrobinsonx in your club too!
I'm 39w1d
No real pains.. tightenings in the evenings & got discharge too, actually seems a bit pinky today.
Also in with midwife tomo, should be offered a sweep. Altho have a chest infection so hopefully I feel a bit better tomo, definitely feel improvement today, I didn't need a 2 hour afternoon nap. Was offered induction for due date (big baby & back to back) I initially declined but I think I might book in tomo.

Chellooo · 13/11/2023 17:36

Our little man arrived on Wednesday morning after waters breaking Monday evening and an induction on Tues night as contractions hadn't started.
He is such a little dream, I can't imagine my life without him now!

Getting a lot of heat from midwife as he's lost just under 9% which is scary and has a touch of jaundice but I'm honestly doing all I can. Even his nappies aren't "wet enough" and are still too green so I literally spent the day stress crying about what to do.

He will sleep 11-6 at night which I know isn't ideal but he stresses himself so much trying to settle to sleep that the idea of wakening him to feed breaks my heart!

He honestly is the cutest little button but the anxiety of thinking I'm doing him harm in some way by breastfeeding him is killing me

BabyBabyBaby123 · 13/11/2023 17:55

@Chellooo Congratulations!

You’re not doing him any harm, but I really think to push him through his jaundice you have to wake him at least once at night.

my DS is gaining weight slowly and I am waking him every 2 hours on the advice of my midwife and the hospital’s feeding team.

Jaundice is a vicious circle, baby will be too sleepy to feed, but needs milk to help flush out the jaundice. You might find that once he is no longer jaundiced he wakes more frequently on his own, as that does seem like a long stretch of sleep for a newborn.

TMI2000 · 13/11/2023 17:57

Congratulations @Chellooo !❤️

39 weeks today and just lost my mucus plug, I lost this a couple weeks back and have been slowly losing mucus however as it’s so close to my due date 🤞🏻 it means something is coming even though I know it can also mean nothing. Come on baby boy!💙

Mrsrobinsonx · 13/11/2023 18:08

@Katiec1 @LilmissCa
Ooh, good luck with the midwife appointments tomorrow! Let us know how you get on.
I had an induction with my 2nd and it wasn’t too bad at all as far as labour goes so I will accept one when they offer it. X

@Chellooo congratulations! I would try and dream feed baby for now so they are still feeding in the night.

@TMI2000 that sounds really promising that things are happening though! Good luck x
