@LeeanneD11 I’d second the use
of dulcoease.

@GreenAventurinee I’ve been assured several times that formula fed babies often take an age to settle into a bowel movement routine; particularly if you used ready made formula and then switched to powered. I used to get really stressed about input and output!
We’re on day 15 and still have no pattern to the poo or consistency in its consistency! We’ve definitely found previous little ones have settled sooner than this one - being the last one they obviously have a duty to keep me on my toes!

We had a dreadful night last night with this little one; lots of wind and nothing was getting it out, so I’m hoping Amazon will deliver the infacol I ordered at 2 minutes to midnight at a decent time today so we can get it on board this evening!

not sure if I’m having contractions. Was having some mild cramping before bed. Woke at 1.30am from some pain. Have stayed in bed and just downloaded a contraction tracker to see if there’s any rhythm to it.

what I’m feeling is a period style cramp, a bit worse than that, but the same feeling. Only been tracking for about 30 mins, but each one is pretty much one minute long, every 5 minute.

JoyApple · 05/11/2023 11:35

@GreenAventurinee @Spareincoming
I'm also formula feeding and got a windy baby, especially at night. I asked midwife and and she said although guidelines don't state you can't, some people say giving a bit of water helps (I haven't tried it yet). I have infacol but I thought it was more for lactose intolerance? Or is it worth a try? I also have gripe water but that says it's for post 1 month? I have probiotic drops too but haven't been consistent with it.

How do you give night feeds? Currently I'm taking up a flask of boiling/hot water and cooled fridge water and doing half and half like tommee tippee prep method. I have got the prep but babies never taking more than 90ml at feeds. I'm just wondering whether the method I'm using may be contributing to the wind.

How often are your formula fed babies waking up at night? Mine is up every 3 hours, from the start of the last feed. I think I was hoping it'd be less than that as formula fed but tbh I have no idea what is normal. I only read one book on formula feeding (the 7am to 7pm sleep schedule one) and that seemed to suggest by week two we'd get longer stretches, but tbh I'm struggling alot to keep baby awake during the day.

The baby blues have got worse this morning. Hoping the peak means it will pass in the next few days. Hope you are all doing well.

JoyApple · 05/11/2023 11:35

@Psqueak87 that sounds promising, wishing you all the very best. Rest up when you can x

Psqueak87 · 05/11/2023 11:42

@JoyApple thank you! It’s still pretty regular, lasting 45 seconds every 3 minutes.

im doubting they’re contractions because although painful, I expected much worse.

ive been tracking for about 90 mins now. There is definitely a rhythm to it. At what stage would you go in?

Spareincoming · 05/11/2023 11:51

@Psqueak87 could be the start of something; good luck!

@JoyApple We find infacol works for wind but takes a few days to get going, we’ve used gripe water in the past too as it is better for refluxy babies - the boots apple flavoured one seems to work fastest!

Little one is up every 3 1/2 hours for a 90-100ml feed. I take the perfect prep upstairs - I have tape over the speaker holes or else it’s too loud in the early hours!

How are you mixing the powder? I was told years ago to mix by swirling or stirring as it is less bubble producing than shaking.

Also, one of the DC was a wind holder, you could hear it but they wouldn’t burp or fart, walking up and down the stairs for 10 minutes was the cure for that one!

I expect to be doing 6 feeds a day for about 3 weeks before swapping to 5 - looking at the notes I’ve made for each of the DC, 3 weeks has been more of turning point than 2. They’re also more awake from then, right now little one is awake for 20-30 minutes at a time other than feeding time, and not that often during the day either.

(I write down their feeds for the first month, in a book with a list of who’s sent gifts and cards - no idea why I started recording feeds but I’ve done it for them all!)

I spoke to the mental health team this week gone as I was worried that the baby blues were dragging on and I’ve developed post natal anxiety in the past, they were very reassuring and said week 2-3 was often the peak and to remember a lot of mums find surviving not thriving is all they can manage in the first few weeks and months.

Despite having a few DC and a career working with children and young people, I often feel out of my depth or wobble about how things are going. I think it’s normal!

I would call triage and get their advice first. Is it your 1st?

JoyApple · 05/11/2023 12:03

@Spareincoming thank you! I found your post very comforting ❤️

I hope the baby blues pass for you. I didn't expect it to make me feel this low.

I've got two preps so I might take the night one out soon too. I love the sellotape tip over the speaker.

I think I'll get started on infacol then ... She doesn't seem refluxy (unless she hasn't had a burp ...). Do you use infacol for every feed or just the night ones?

Spareincoming · 05/11/2023 12:12

@JoyApple I’m finding I’m having big lows and big highs this time round. I said to my DH that I’d be thrilled to find a middle ground this week but we’ll see, I think for me the mental recovery is always harder than the physical, and that’s post section!

I’ll be aiming to use infacol for the evening and early morning feeds, anything between the hours of 8pm and 7am I think; I usually find that’s effective but obviously each baby is different!
This little one seems to spend the hours of 11am-1pm loudly farting, much to the amusement of the other DC, but by 11pm can’t get the wind shifted.

@joyapple yep it’s my first! I decided just to go in, so I’m on my way now, if they send me home it’s no big deal ☺️

PinkPlantCase · 05/11/2023 12:51

Sounds like things are going really well @Psqueak87 !! 😁😁

GreenAventurinee · 05/11/2023 13:04

Formula fed here and she’s on an ounce/two ounces every 3 and a half / four hours. We have infacol and I think it’s helping a little bit I’m not sure if it’s because shes just getting less windy in general.

GreenAventurinee · 05/11/2023 13:15

Just to fill you in if you’re having sections too… my recovery this time has been amazing. I was petrified after my last planned C-section (I was very young) but I planned things really well and it’s been great. I found the second night extremely difficult for a few hours and would suggest to try and stay the second night in hospital where they can give you more than just paracetamol if you’re able to. I did regret coming home after 24 hrs at that point, but after those few hours had passsed, I felt great!
I never thought I would have been one of those women being able to take a little stroll on day three but I was.

Really wish I hadn’t been so anxious, it’s been the perfect birth experience for me.

Alloveragain3 · 05/11/2023 13:19

Oh my lord, felling all the emotions.

After me telling everyone I thought baby would go way overdue, I just had a bright red bleed at 39 weeks (like a period bleed).

I'm in now for CTG and I've started contracting.

Baby may be here sooner than thought!

Spareincoming · 05/11/2023 13:31

@GreenAventurinee Good to hear you’re doing so well! I’m having much better days and a few bad hours in between! I’m desperate to start driving… I’m aiming for next Saturday to try as I’ll be three weeks done; which is the longest I’ve waited.

@Psqueak87 that sounds like you’re well on your way! I’m hoping I get a labour starting like that and not going from 0-100 right away when my water broke like with my first. I’m starting to become impatient and I feel nothing whatsoever. Hope you’re doing well!

DollyGx · 05/11/2023 15:10

@Psqueak87 oh that sounds promising! Good luck 🤞🏼☺️

Psqueak87 · 05/11/2023 15:13

Got to the hospital and they hooked me up, definitely having contractions, about 3 minutes apart lasting a minute each.

but they checked my cervix and it’s “completely closed” so they sent me home and told me not to come back in until I can no longer talk through my contractions. Which I already can’t do. They’re so painful I’m close to tears every time. I’ve just got back into bed as I’m exhausted, but I know there’s no sleep going to happen with these every 3 mins 😞

Psqueak87 · 05/11/2023 15:14

Water hasn’t broken but I’ve been bleeding since yesterday; which they said is expected with cervix change…although mines closed apparently.

Hope it's goes smoothly for you , I was in the same boat as you with my first , just couldn't face the contractions . I ended up staying at home till I was 8cm dilated . And I couldn't move and ended up having home birth best experience I've ever had and he wasn't planned to have him at home . I went for long soak in the bath and kept myself busy while having the contractions . It's so hard to do anything while they are so close together . But you got this your so close to meeting your little princess 💖💖

Psqueak87 · 05/11/2023 15:25

@LeeanneD11 thank you, that’s made me feel much better. I was so disappointed when she said it was closed, and now I’m so confused at what constitutes a reason for going back in. The pain is so much, and they’re so close.

How close are they now. Are you far from your hospital . It's so annoying when your cervix is closed too xx

Psqueak87 · 05/11/2023 15:36

@LeeanneD11 theyre about 4 mins apart now. 1 min long. I’m about 35 mins from hospital if there’s no traffic. Luckily today is Sunday so there shouldn’t be much. I’m just lying in a dark room for now, will try and have a bath in a little bit.

it’s looking less and less likely that I’ll manage my epidural free birth, jf this is the pain so far there’s no way I’ll be able to cope. I am obviously a big baby with low pain threshold.

I'm the same when comes to contractions , I was crying each time , and the pains was so intense . I jusy didn't know what to do with myself lol 😂, I'm dreading it this time around, I have a section booked for 14th but don't think I'll make it to that date , the amount of pressure & cramping I get buts it's manageable at the moment and I'm only 37 weeks . I hope your ok xx

Oldermum84 · 05/11/2023 15:52

@Psqueak87 there's no such thing as a low pain threshold. Some people just feel pain more due to the way the nerve endings are. Don't make yourself feel worse.

With my first I was told to go in if I couldn't manage the pain as they would give me pain relief then. If I were you I'd have that bath asap to see if that helps the pain but if not head straight back to the hospital.

And epidural are great!

Good luck x
