Sonographers won’t commit to sex!

Hello all

i had my 20 week anomaly scan last week and all happy and healthy. The sonographer had a good look for genitals and said ‘I can’t see a Willy so would guess girl, but really it’s 50:50’. Baby was lying face down with legs crossed, so not the easiest!

this week, I was used as a model for sonography teaching, so spent 90 minutes being scanned. Again, sonographers said ‘probably’ girl because can’t see a willy, but wouldn’t commit

Now, obviously I’ll love whatever arrives, but I’m DESPERATE to know! With my boy they knew straight away and he tended to keep his legs crossed too

those of you who’ve had girls identified at 20 weeks scans - are the sonographers just looking for absence of a penis (so probably girl), or were they able to be more definite that they were looking at a vulva (so definitely girl)??

They look for a vulva/girls bits, not just the absence of a penis.

Blushingm · 18/10/2023 20:49

Get a 4d scan?

sipsqueak · 18/10/2023 20:52

I'm just fascinated to hear that a sonographer used the word willy

FutureMandosWife · 18/10/2023 20:58

When I had my 20 week scan, we didn't want to know but he should is everything before the nurse could swipe away.

Maybe book a private scan and get it confirmed?

Yes they both did! I was surprised too!

ok thanks all, just got a shy baby then. Don’t think I’ll be able to stop myself booking another scan to find out, I’m too excited 😆

We got 'probably girls' at our 16, 18 and 20 week scans... and there were 2 of them to look at! They really don't like to commit with girls!
We got our definite answer at 22 weeks at a fetal medicine hospital, but I suspect our local would have kept on saying 'probably' for some time!

YokoOnosBigHat · 18/10/2023 21:19

Didn't find out, but at 20 week scan with one of our daughters the sonographer said it was "very clear" what she was if we wanted to know, so they must have seen something obvious.

I'm loving the title of this thread.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 18/10/2023 21:28

Don't be pushy. I suppose you have to date them for a while.

Notellinganyone · 18/10/2023 21:30

Your post makes it sound like you are booking a sex date with them and they are being elusive!

ShowOfHands · 18/10/2023 21:33

Is it because your refuse to be exclusive? Do you buy them dinner first?

Nelbert19 · 18/10/2023 21:35

Haha! That must be it - will take some candles and chocolate covered strawberries to the next scan and hope that gets the sonographer in the mood 🤪

they hate to commit unless a private clinic in my experience.

in my recent 20 week scan - the sonographer said - that looks like a little willy (clear little Willy on screen) so it’s likely it’s a boy but we can’t be certain.

… so even though it would seem clear - they wouldn’t say for sure!

HP89 · 18/10/2023 21:43

Get a private blood test.

tunapokebowl · 18/10/2023 21:56

We had a girl. I knew she was a girl before the sonographer said anything, you could see her genitals clearly.

We also did a Sneak Peak gender blood test, which was accurate, but I think it may not work if you've previously had a boy. Think I'm right in saying some of the boy DNA stays in your body/blood?

As PP have said, could you get a private scan or a 4D?

WithOneLook · 18/10/2023 21:57

I had a girl (2022) and they were definite about it at my 20 week scan. I got them to check at all my following scans and even though it was different sonographers scanning me, I was told 'yep, still a girl' 😂and they were right!

PuttingDownRoots · 18/10/2023 22:03

My first DD my 12 week scan was done by the professor in charge being observed by some students, asked if we minded knowing... and showed them (and us) the early indicators of sex but made it clear it wasn't 100% at that stage... but he was right, girl confirmed at 20 weeks.

DD2 was a lot more modest... they couldn't get a good view, and sonographer wouldn't commit but said more likely girl than boy.

They only commit if they really are sure.

Ponderingwindow · 18/10/2023 22:07

i had a bunch of extra scans because of some issues. I don’t recall the exact weeks, but they specifically noted the anatomical signs that confirmed we were having a girl. I think at one stage it was something about 3 lines and then there was something else at another stage of development . Wow, these details get fuzzy, but it was definitely the observation of a girl.

the big thing though was position. Dd was in a position that made getting a good view of the ideal angle easy

justanotherlaura · 18/10/2023 22:28

They're probably just being non-commital to cover their own backs. Our NHS trust refuse to tell you the sex after being sued by people who were told the wrong sex at a scan

chesterelly1 · 18/10/2023 22:50

I had potential chromosome issue and had consultant, registrar, student, sonographer and midwife at a scan. They all said "probably a girl", I figured they couldn't all be wrong! & they weren't!

joanneligthelm · 18/10/2023 22:56

20 week scan the sonographer said 80% sure was a girl , I had to go back 2 weeks later for some measurements they couldn't get . And there it was easy to see he was a boy ! It .must of been hiding before...

PickledScrump · 18/10/2023 23:27

I had a “probably girl” at 20 week and a 27 week 4D scan. Only had a “definite girl” at 37 week presentation scan.

Emsxox · 19/10/2023 09:59

We had a private scan at 16 weeks whereby the sonographer said he was confident baby was a girl. 20 week nhs scan I had a trainee sonographer along with another observing her and she said although they can’t give a certain it looked like there were 3 lines which signifies girl but as you say they were non commital.
I have a low lying placenta so have to return for further scan at 32 weeks so will be double checking with them on gender and May poss have a 4d scan prior to that so will ask them too lol xx

PinkRoses1245 · 19/10/2023 10:19

My friend had to sign a form at their scan saying the sonographer would only tell them to the best of their knowledge. Why not wait and enjoy the surprise.

cellarst · 19/10/2023 10:23

Just take the bloody test privately. They will send you the kit. Have a google for the company. Then the position the baby matters not!
