How did you find out the sex of your baby? (At birth)

3rd baby and we've decided to have a surprise for babies sex! We found out with our previous two DC so this is all new. Due next week and suddenly realised I don't know how I want to be told. Do I want my husband to tell me? Do I want to hold the baby and check myself? Will the midwife reveal it?

It's a planned c section for various medical reasons if that makes a difference. Please tell me how you found out at birth!

It was in my birth plan for DH to tell me

NeverAloneNeverAgain · 21/09/2023 07:17

The midwife told us. We loved having a surprise although it really annoyed our parents who wanted to buy things in set colours 🤷‍♀️

PatsWoggle · 21/09/2023 07:22

DH told me for all of ours. It was really special.

WandaWonder · 21/09/2023 07:23

I don't remember one of the people in the room did

PimpMyFridge · 21/09/2023 07:32

DH told me with both, we didn't think to plan it, it just happened that way.
First DC, I had other things going on so it didn't stand out as an amazing moment.
Second DC, we had a name if it was a girl and DH didn't say 'it's a girl', he said 'it's first name second name' and everything was calmer also, that was a special moment.

For various reasons, it was all a bit fraught at the end, but once the baby was out safely...

The midwife held her up and said: 'can you see what it is?'

Me: 'it's a boy!'

To which she replied... 'umm, no that's the umbilical cord, you have a girl' 😆

PimpMyFridge · 21/09/2023 07:35

@Hidingawaytoday 😁😂😁😂

Wotwotwotwotwot · 21/09/2023 07:36

First time the doctor told us and second time DH told me, two very special moments 😍

lemongirl1985 · 21/09/2023 07:43

We didn't find out with our 3 till after birth and after a while of us not checking as we were just so happy to have the baby safely in our arms the midwife had to remind us to have a look!

Swifty1newmama · 21/09/2023 07:43

Emergency C section - they held her up over the screen with her butt facing us so we worked out we had a girl 😂

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 21/09/2023 07:47

The midwife told us with number 1, dh told me x3, I looked myself with number 5.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 21/09/2023 07:51

Mine are all teenagers and had 3x sections due to other issues. Surgeon told us. Special moment always when a baby arrives safely and the sex is not the thing I would be focussed on tbh

YouAndMeAndThem · 21/09/2023 08:10

We both looked together for my daughter, she was delivered and put directly onto my chest and we checked.

For.my son, he was a C-section and it was all getting a bit hairy at the time, so he was delivered, hoisted up arse first over the divide so we could see them whisked away to be checked over as they were a bit worried.

Both ways were fine, and necessary at the time!

Sammi89 · 21/09/2023 08:12

I hadn’t even thought about how I would be told, and my birth was a bit of an emergency situation so a dr delivered my baby. She held the baby in front me with his bits right up to my face, and said “can you see what’s between the legs?” Lol 😂

Sammi89 · 21/09/2023 08:13

We found out with our second and This time we already know :D

Nigelladamascena · 21/09/2023 08:17

1st time, DH told me.
2nd time, midwife showed me.

JollyJellyCat · 21/09/2023 08:17

Ds midwife told us as she handed him over

DD the midwife handed her over and said "see what you've got", we looked and obviously had WTF is that faces on (girls bits look pretty funny!) So she took pity on us and said "you've got a little girl".

JumbledE · 21/09/2023 08:19

Thanks everyone!

I think I'm probably over thinking it 🤣 All being well I'll probably ask to be given baby before checking/being told :)

Definitely focusing more on a healthy baby but it's exciting to be thinking about this too! 😊

I wanted a girl very much so convinced both DP and myself that it was a boy. I can still remember the utter surprise in his voice when he said "She's a girl!" For the second one, the midwife did the classic "Here he....it...is!"

Clambering · 21/09/2023 08:47

My second was an undiagnosed breech so we found out when the midwife said, with some surprise, "I can see scrotum" Grin

If you're having a C-section, you can have the drapes dropped, and baby lifted so you can see for yourselves what you have. I had it with my second (albeit emergency, not planned) and it was truly one of the best moments of my life. The anaesthetist took a picture of the moment as well. I love that photo so much. Once that was done, the drapes were put back up and baby checked over while waiting for delayed cord clamping. Once that's done, then baby can come to you.

Tootingbec · 21/09/2023 09:04

Both times the midwife asked if I wanted to see what I had - and both times I asked the midwife to tell me because I was so off my head with the experience of giving birth, I wasn’t confident I could figure it out by looking - like I needed a “professional” to tell me 🤣

recyclemeagain · 21/09/2023 09:05

We had planned for the surprise at birth. But it ended up a cat 1 section, husband was no permitted to be in theatre due to the level of emergency, I was under GA.
I know midwives took our son to my husband while I was still under, so I guess they told him. I think my husband told me at some point while I was coming round but I really don't remember. I just know our son was there and that was about it.
So second time round I insisted on finding out the surprise at the anomaly scan so that I knew I'd be properly present to find out and could find out together with my husband.
Ultimately though all that matters is baby and mum are ok. Good luck.

And me.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 21/09/2023 09:09

The midwife told us I think. It didn't cross my mind to put it in my birth plan or ask my husband to tell me.
