Not eating healthy in pregnancy due to sickness and feeling so guilty

Hi

I’m currently now 18 weeks and I’m still really nauseous and off loads of food. The food I fancy eating literally depends on the day but it hasn’t been the best it’s been cereal, choc crisps, snacks, jacket potatoes, beans on toast that’s about it really

I ate so well in my first pregnancy and I can’t help but feel so guilty for not this time round and that something bad will happen for not 😩 I’m just wondering if any one else didn’t eat the best and everything was ok I no it’s sounds so stupid but I had some early losses and it’s just heightened my anxiety through this pregnancy 😩 thankyou x

I was soooo sick from week six to 19 with my son and basically lived off apples, sausage rolls, chicken Super Noodles, takeaways etc. My son is fine: a tall, clever, chatty toddler :)

Eat what you can and don't feel guilty about it :)

TheBirdintheCave · 18/09/2023 21:29

Oh and he only weighed 6lb 9oz at a week late.

MidnightOnceMore · 18/09/2023 21:32

Eat what you can and take vitamins, that's all you can do. There is no guilt necessary, you're doing the best you can.

SnapdragonToadflax · 18/09/2023 21:32

I lived on beige. Couldn't face anything green, ate far too much salt, mostly in the form of crisps and gravy. Sugar made me feel sick, even fruit. Had terrible heartburn so didn't eat very much in volume, just snacked.

I now have a healthy and very smart four year old. The baby will take what it needs.

Verymodestmouse · 18/09/2023 21:33

We all did this! Don’t worry. You’ll feel better later on an can eat some veg then. Just do what you can.

Missingmyusername · 18/09/2023 21:33

Nothing wrong with a jacket pot, toast or beans! Baby will take what is needed, eat what you feel you can/what you fancy. Do they advise vitamins these days? I can’t recall, it’s been a long time…

I’m sorry for your previous losses OP.

CheeseRadio · 18/09/2023 21:35

Please don’t angst about it - just do what you have to do to get through it! I had horrendous sickness in pregnancy, and ate awfully and was up to my eyeballs on strong medication because of it. My baby was fine. And at nearly four years old, he even rarely picks up a cold. Beans on toast and cereal sound absolutely fine, by the way! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy x

Businessflake · 18/09/2023 21:35

Really no need to worry. I got through over half of one pregnancy on salt and vinegar crisps and satsumas.

Devilsmommy · 18/09/2023 21:38

I had really awful sickness all the way through and killer heartburn. The last 3 months i had constant cravings for chips, but only the really greasy chip shop ones so every day had a bag of chips from the chippy😆 my little one is nearly 1 and is perfectly healthy so give yourself a break, I'd say most women have done what you are

NorthernExpat · 18/09/2023 21:39

My midwife told me that if you’ve had a half decent diet before pregnancy your body has more than enough vitamins and minerals stored up to grow a baby. Anything you eat while you feel sick is a bonus so go easy on yourself.

ASGIRC · 18/09/2023 22:14

There is so much pressure put on pregnant women to eat healthily that we lose sight of actually living and surviving in the first few months.

Eat what you can, when you can.

Ive lost 3kgs so far, in my first trimester. Im off a load of stuff, and one of the things I CAN eat is a type of greek salad! So I am eating veg, but probably not enough calories!

Im doing my best and it will have to do! Your baby will get all it needs from whatever you eat!

TheBirdintheCave · 18/09/2023 23:19

@ASGIRC Glad to hear you're still doing well! 🥰

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 18/09/2023 23:39

Been there done that this pregnancy. Eat what you can, take your supplements.

I was ill, living off salted tortilla chips for several weeks. When I started being able to eat small bits and pieces it wasn't good food. Chocolate, sweets, ice lollies, chips. The first non-beige I wanted was deli meats. Not advised but it was that or not eat so I ate them. It took until 28 weeks to regain my prepregnancy weight, but baby is tracking 50th centile and my bloods have all come back good, no deficiencies - I'm not even anaemic!

Baby takes what it needs, it's you that would go without. Baby will be absolutely fine.

ASGIRC · 18/09/2023 23:43

@TheBirdintheCave thanks!!! Yeap, little bean is alive and well, now at 11+3!!!
How are you doing since your chemical in July?

TheBirdintheCave · 19/09/2023 06:53

@ASGIRC I'm 5+5 today with a natural surprise! Found out when we were on holiday and it was a big shock 😅 Just need to get past nine weeks this time 🙏🏻 Trying to take it one day at a time but controlling the anxiety is so difficult.

MintyCedric · 19/09/2023 07:04

I had 24/7 nausea for the first 22 weeks and threw up every morning for the rest of my pregnancy…absolutely could not touch cooked veg for the entire duration.

My pg diet went something like this:

First trimester: salt n vinegar crisps, ginger nuts, Kit Kats, cheese and pickled onion sandwiches, oranges.

Second trimester: M&S sushi (not the raw fish kind), crusty rolls with Boursin and celery

Third trimester: Caesar salad, Subway BBQ rib sandwiches, orange juice ice lollies.

The outcome of all that is a 19 year old, 5’8 gym bunny who’s currently enjoying Freshers Week ahead of starting her law degree 😁!

notanotherclairebear · 19/09/2023 07:09

I lived off a beige buffet the first two trimesters with both mine. Was too sick to stomach anything else, even the smell of cooking was enough to turn my stomach. They're now 6 and 4, full of beans and don't seem any worse off for my terrible pregnancy diet 😅 I just figured I'd listen to my body - if my body is throwing up every time I eat an apple then it clearly doesn't want apple! Cheesy chips on the other hand...

OneMoreCookieMonster · 19/09/2023 07:13

My 3m old is super healthy. I barely ate from week 11 til 31. I ate as much fresh fruit and raw carrots (craving) as I could. Far too much toast. Protein was mainly a hit. My midwife told me to keep taking my prenatal vitamin and stay hydrated. Which was a challenge

ASGIRC · 19/09/2023 12:33

@TheBirdintheCave OMG amazing!!! Fingers crossed it goes well!!!
Do you have a scan booked??

TheBirdintheCave · 19/09/2023 12:37

@ASGIRC Thank you! I contacted the EPU who booked me in for a scan for 7 weeks (which is next Thursday). It feels so far away even though it's only nine days. I won't risk contacting the midwife until after that, providing everything goes well.

ASGIRC · 19/09/2023 12:40

@TheBirdintheCave fingers crossed!! It will fly by!
I have my 1st trimester scan next Tuesday.

Hope you aren't having many symptoms and managing to eat normally!! I'm really struggling with that part 😂😂😂

Viewfrommyhouse · 19/09/2023 12:42

I lived on Salt & Vinegar crisps with Laughing Cow triangles for the first 5 months.

MrsRobinStrike · 19/09/2023 12:43

I ate croissants, Cornettos and Rich Tea biscuits for a lot of my pregnancy.
Baby is great, super healthy.

TheBirdintheCave · 19/09/2023 12:44

@ASGIRC The nausea has just started to last all day which I'm thrilled about as I didn't get that with my miscarriages but did with my son.

Sorry you're struggling :( I remember how hard it was to eat. My husband had to cook for weeks as I couldn't be near the kitchen. I hope it improves soon and that your dating scan goes well! :D

Aozora13 · 19/09/2023 12:45

Pregnancy in my head was all wafting around eating healthily, body is a temple and a precious vessel etc. Reality was dry heaving into bushes and getting into rows in Starbucks when they tried to offer me decaf. I don’t think anything not-beige passed my lips (except in reverse) for the first 20 weeks and the last 10 I mostly ate ice cream or cake and cried a lot. All 3 seem to have survived unscathed thankfully. I know it’s easier said than done but try not to worry, every pregnancy is different and you won’t hurt the baby if your diet isn’t A+ this time round. Oh and congratulations!
