@Flossiepot i feel fine! A bit tired but that also could just be pregnancy. I dont have any of the diabetes symptoms like being thirsty or peeing a lot so it was a bit of a surprise!

@suz2285 thank you, my mum has type 1 (hence why I got the test) so I can ask her as well. I’ll definitely join the Facebook group as well.

Im so annoyed, I’d just ordered a luxury chocolate advent calendar as a little treat from our local chocolatier 😭

suz2285 · 04/10/2023 10:05

@Mushroo yeah that's why i'm not sure why they didn't refer me for the GTT as well. I was told they would, i had my HbA1C measured at my booking in and it was fine, so not sure if it was that, and she said they'd test again in a few weeks but not sure if she means the same test or something else! who knows....

You'll be fine, i'm sure you can still have a small bit of chocolate now and then 😀

Mushroo · 04/10/2023 10:21

@suz2285 im hoping so! Xmas day is going to be lean with no alcohol or chocolate or potatoes 😂

suz2285 · 04/10/2023 10:26

@Mushroo oh god don't give up the potatoes! that's a step too far!! 😂

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 04/10/2023 10:32

@Mushroo potatoes might well be fine for you! They were for me, especially if mashed with butter, cream or cheese 🤣 or roasted and eaten with a meal. A few squares of chocolate will be fine if had with a fatty meal. You'll see what works for you when you get your kit and can start testing. I had mince pies with clotted cream at Christmas, and my readings were okay.

Also, and don't laugh, if you eat a naughty meal, just dance around for 20-30 mins afterwards or go for a brisk walk. The physical activity helps and your readings will be a lot lower. I tried to go this after every main meal of the day

buckingmad · 04/10/2023 13:31

@Mushroo sorry to hear that. Don't give up the roasties unless you really have to!

I had the GDD test with my first but it's not been mentioned for this one, I now can't remember why I had it with my first?!

Mummyme87 · 04/10/2023 16:03

You will likely still be able to eat potato, my friend could eat a whole jacket as long as she had a huge portion of protein, so loads of beans/salad. Always have a walk or some exercise after meals as will help bring levels down, what you want to avoid is big spikes as that’s what causes the issues.
it’s an adjustment but not always a bad one. You should see a dietician alongside diabetes midwife

Hummusanddipdip · 04/10/2023 16:41

Anyone else suffering with severe cramping in their legs? If I lay on my right or on my back (I seem to roll over) my calves are cramped horribly, almost made me cry at 3 o'clock this morning.

I've started trying to sleep on my left, but invariably roll over in the night.

Kalodin · 04/10/2023 16:53

Yes I got this terribly in my first pregnancy @Hummusanddipdip And when it starts rearing in subsequent pregnancies I ensure I down a pint of water before bed and that appears to be helping.

Lightningrain · 04/10/2023 17:03

@Hummusanddipdip I’ve woken in the early hours with calf cramps twice so far. I also think it seems to be linked to not drinking enough water so I’ve been making an effort to drink more.

The second time took what seemed like forever to ease and it took a couple of days before my leg felt back to normal. I’ve got a gel ice pack that has a Velcro strap to wrap around legs and that seemed to help.

Onedayatatime24 · 04/10/2023 17:14

@Hummusanddipdip same here! I googled it and it said to keep hydrated so I've been drinking loads of water and hasn't happened as much since.

Luhou · 04/10/2023 17:25

@Hummusanddipdip yes! Cramp is awful in the night. Wakes me up so painful. Only way to get rid it to get up and move about.

WitcheryDivine · 04/10/2023 17:27

Last couple of days I've been having quite achey stomach muscles - not low down like round ligament pain, more down the sides (so like over my lower ribs and down towards my lower bump). I'm trying not to worry about it but I'm really curious as to what's caused it? Could it just be growing?

FirstT1meMum · 04/10/2023 17:39

@Hummusanddipdip cramp seems intense! It doesn't happen every night but when it does omg it is so painful!!

Just wondering if someone could offer some advice/has experienced similar?
On Saturday baby was really obvious with her kicks. Yesterday and today I can still feel her but they seem to be less forceful but still there. I do have an anterior placenta but is this something I need to ring triage for or not as I'm still feeling the movements? Don't want to bother them over nothing

RG9895 · 04/10/2023 17:41

@FirstT1meMum glad you have asked this as i had a sharp stabbing pain this morning which I think is muscle and stretching and shes been so active last few days but definitely been quieter and less forceful yesterday and today, perhaps have turnt their backs to us! I also have an anterior placenta, im gonna have my dinner tonight and see if she has a good wiggle and if not I'm gonna go get checked

FirstT1meMum · 04/10/2023 17:55

@RG9895 honestly they keep us on our toes! I'm not sure if it's just because I'm more tired in the week or what. DH thinks she just isn't as far forward or sitting behind my placenta and he's very calm about the whole thing because he can still feel her and my emotions are crazy! Glad I'm not alone in feeling this! Keep us updated ❤️

Hummusanddipdip · 04/10/2023 18:12

Thanks everyone, I hope its not hydration related, I'm drinking so much water, literally 2 flasks while at school and at least 2 lives when I get home, bat lemonade I can't drink anything else 😳

I'll try and up my drinking to see if they helps tonight :) hope everyone's cramps ease off too

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 04/10/2023 18:44

For the cramps magnesium can help apparently. I get foot cramps, toes mainly, but I think mine is hydration related because I get busy at work and forget to drink enough

sashastuck · 04/10/2023 19:22

I’m another one who’s been experiencing cramps. Had it 3 times in the night and oh boy it hurts! I’ve had it when not pregnant as well though. Had some of the sharp round ligament pains too.
Baby is still in no real pattern of movement here, posterior placenta but he’s having some active days/quiet nights and then vice versa. It’s definitely stressful, I constantly feel on the verge of ‘should I go in to be checked’

@Mushroo sorry that you’ve got GD 😫 I don’t know much about it but I hope you’ll be able to control it easily with diet and all will be okay! Ladies here will always support you too ❤️

RG9895 · 04/10/2023 19:30

@FirstT1meMum my husband's exactly the same! So relaxed and says oh she's probably just sleeping after some active days. It really is so difficult when to know to get checked if I had absolutely none id go but I have felt some and funnily enough felt one as im typing this but they really do feel different I think shes kicking off my back and I just feel the left over movement if that makes sense haha just about to have dinner and hope she goes crazy after that! Have you felt much since? X

OP posts:
FirstT1meMum · 04/10/2023 19:52

@RG9895 definitely feel the same, don't want to be a pain but not sure when to actually be worried! Definitely if she had stopped totally then I'd be straight up! I've felt a couple since sitting down after a shower, just got tea cooking so hopefully once I've had that and in full relax mode she will carry on! I found when I got in from work lying on my left for a bit then rolling helped too! Definitely makes sense as it does feel like a rebound type movement haha! X

Booklover88 · 04/10/2023 20:03

@Mushroo I have GD too, was diagnosed two weeks ago and was absolutely gutted and so so worried. Fast forward two weeks and I’m feeling so much better about it now. Do you have a clinic appointment booked in? I see it as a good sign they found it (like you, I didn’t have any symptoms and my test results were borderline-I was tested because of PCOS/age) as so many women go undiagnosed.

The NHS advice isn’t brilliant so I’d also recommend going to the Gestational Diabetes website and Facebook page. It’s a massive learning curve and I felt really overwhelmed at first but now I’m in the swing of it, it’s a lot easier and you can eat a lot more than you think you can, especially if you get organised with your meals. Eating on the go is hard but planning my meals has made it a lot more straightforward.

I try not to eat too many carbs in the morning and then make sure any carbs I have are paired with protein and fat. Snacks tend to be carb free for me. A typical weekday for me is:

breakfast- overnight oats with about 15g of rolled oats, full fat Greek yogurt, a small handful of berries, chia, pumpkin and sunflower seeds and a big dollop of almond butter.

lunch- feta and avocado salad, protein bagel thin with cream cheese and ham

dinner- chicken breast with cheese, cauliflower cheese with cannellini beans and broccoli

Sweet treats-Nature Valley protein bars (amazing warmed up for 30 seconds in the microwave and with cream!), 10 cal jelly pots, chocolate mousse from the GD website and Oppo ice cream!

it takes more time/headspace but worth it for a happy and healthy baby. Sending love xx

TunnocksTCake · 04/10/2023 20:20

@Hummusanddipdip omg yes I've had cramps about 4 times in the night and they are awful! Hurts for days after! I've found it only happens on the nights after I've been at work, so sat at my desk all day - don't know if that rings true for you. I've also heard magnesium helps.

Just a PSA - la redoute have a 50% sale on at the moment and always found their kids clothes/ bedding / decor to be great quality

Mummyme87 · 04/10/2023 20:33

I havent been too bad for leg cramps this time actually. Used to suffer in previous pregnancies, waking me in the middle of the night. Eat magnesium rich foods, avocado/nuts like cashew and almond/spinach.

those questioning lots of abdominal pains/cramps, super normal. Just think about a growing human inside of you, all the muscles and ligaments stretching, organs being pushed up and out of the way, diaphragm being squashed etc. it can be a very painful process!

Mushroo · 04/10/2023 21:52

@Booklover88 thank you so much. I was pretty miserable this morning but feeling a bit better after speaking to the nurse. Apparently my results were just over so I’m hoping with lifestyle changes should be manageable. I pick up my testing kit tomorrow and meet the dietician on Friday.

Luckily I’m a big fan of protein / dairy so from reading seems I can eat quite a lot. Just want to start testing so I can see what I can and can’t tolerate. Your weekday menu sounds lovely.

Tbh my diet has been way more carb heavy than normal so this might give me a kick up the butt to revert back to being a bit healthier!

Im a little worried about what it means for the birth (I wanted a non-monitored water birth) but I’m just going to take each week at a time and see what they say.
