Does having a big first baby set up all your other babies being big?

Just as the title says! My first baby was 9lb4.. currently pregnant with baby number 2 and I'm just wondering if people had a big baby first and the ones that followed were just as big or bigger or is it completely random? Didn't have GD with baby number 1, I just made a big one 😂

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
JassyRadlett · 31/08/2023 09:11

I'm the bearer of bad news. My first was 9lb4 and my second was around 10lb7.

That said, giving birth the second time was immensely easier than the first time. So I wouldn't worry too much. Just pack 0-3 sleepsuits as well as newborn ones...

TinselTarTars · 31/08/2023 09:13

First was 10lb 8, second was 9lb 9. Second was a week earlier due to an elective section and no GD, just genes!

MissM94 · 31/08/2023 09:15

@JassyRadlett noooo 😂🙈 that's reassuring about your birth though! Had a rough time the first time round, ended in forceps and an episiotomy but recovery was fine! Fingers crossed it's a bit smoother this time round, did you measure big in either pregnancies? I didn't but when I had the baby the midwives told me I was missed because I should of been given extra scans 😂 baby never dropped an ounce of weight since birth either, just a constant guzzler haha

@TinselTarTars oooh so smaller second but still massive 😂 it's crazy isn't it! I was 5.3 born 4 weeks early and my partner was 7lb born at 42 weeks so hardly big buggers 😂

First was 8lb 7, second was 9lb 6!

BigBoysDontCry · 31/08/2023 09:20

Fist was 9lb 13oz, just a couple of days late (but that was because I was in labour for 36 hours then a c section..) 2nd (13 months later) was an elective section, 4 days early and just 8lb 3oz.

JassyRadlett · 31/08/2023 09:21

With DS1 I didn't measure big enough for extra scans, etc.

I knew DS2 would be big because we had extra scans for other reasons - at 33 weeks they estimated he was 6lb at that point. They both arrived very close to their due dates.

WhatdidIdoyesterday · 31/08/2023 09:22

My first was 9lb4 (2 weeks late) but my second was 7lb8 (1 week early).

Funnily enough I looked at my second born (still big) and thought, aw she actually looks like a baby!

ErinAoife · 31/08/2023 09:24

My first was 8, second 8 and third 6

CornishGem1975 · 31/08/2023 09:24

My babies were 7lb 6oz, 8lb 10oz and 9lb 10oz. I stopped at 3, terrified it would be bigger again 😁 Not giant babies but I am very petite and no 3 was born on the 99th centile so I had a lot of extra scans from 20 weeks when it was apparent he was measuring big (I was induced early and he was actually 1lb heavier than predicted. I needed an EMCS in the end as Megamind and his massive head wouldn't come down far enough).

elliejjtiny · 31/08/2023 09:25

My 3 full term babies were all exactly the same length and more or less the same weight (8lb 13.5oz, 8lb 10oz and 8lb 12oz). My 2 premature babies were a bit smaller but on their due dates they were both the same length and around the same weight as the others. I just make them that size I think.

Chanhedforthis · 31/08/2023 09:26

Not for me

DC1 8lb 6oz
DC2 8lb 1oz

Bookchildtable · 31/08/2023 09:28

In my case probably dc1 9lb5, dt had a combined weight of 13lb at 37 weeks so very good sizes for twins.
My siblings first was 9lb8 her second at 41 weeks was 6lb2.

FireEngineGeorge · 31/08/2023 09:37

DC1 was 9lb 2oz, DC2 was 10lb 8oz. No GD but they were both born at 42 weeks. Definitely pack the 0-3 month sleepsuits just incase! DC3 was 7lb 5oz but I was induced at 38 weeks (did actually have GD that time!)

MuMmaOf3littles · 31/08/2023 09:46

DS1 was 8lb12oz, DD was 9lb2oz, DS2 was 9lb5oz - no gestational diabetes on these three. I've just had DS3 7 weeks ago, had gestational diabetes and on insulin and he's the smallest at 7lb15oz

mnahmnah · 31/08/2023 09:50

8lb 12. Then… 10lb 11oz! Sorry!

tinkerbellvspredator · 31/08/2023 09:50

Statistically first babies are smaller than subsequent babies. My second was 2 pounds heavier

DowntonCrabby · 31/08/2023 09:51

Mine were 9lb 9oz then 11lbs. No GD but both went past 42 weeks.

HarrietJet · 31/08/2023 09:52

My first was a ten pounder, 2nd - 9.12lb, and 3rd - 8.2lb!

MissM94 · 31/08/2023 09:54

People.. you are not giving me hope here 😂😂
First child went straight into 0-3 so definitely will be packing them again this time round! They was also born in their due date, I dread to think what would of been if I went over 😂

@CornishGem1975 dying at Megamind 😂😂😂

So the general consensus is that we're all going to be really surprised if baby is less than 8.5 pounds 🥴

Cowlover89 · 31/08/2023 09:57

My first was 8lb 9oz. Dreading what my second is going to be 😬

Vestito · 31/08/2023 10:08

First was 9lb 10oz(1 week overdue), second was 8lb 7oz (on the due date). Second birth far easier. Two DS’s. Funny DS2 is a now 18 and a little taller than brother but a lot heavier! Big guy. It will depend on lots of things - you may go earlier, so will be lighter. But the “road” has already been cleared so to speak 😂 so chances are even if heavier, could be easier! There’s hope!

mumtotwox · 31/08/2023 10:11

First - 8lb 10oz (40+2 weeks)
Second - 8lb 13oz (38+2 weeks)

I dread to think how big my second would have been at full term 😆
